We had a terrific general discussion about all kinds of aviation subjects before moving on to the LimoEasy. Ed has the nose installed and continues to progress. Ed then gave us a tour through his other small scale projects. Keep in mind that some of the small scale projects are pretty large scale. Some of Ed s RC models are almost big enough to ride on. Thanks, Ed! 1 st Annual Mid-Winter Chili Feed: Our 1 st Annual Mid-Winter Chili Feed was a resounding success. We had ten varieties of chili including White Chili, Antelope Chili, Three Meat Chili, and Road Kill Chili. All of the chili was terrific and we even had one, rather serious chili connoisseur (or a wine connoisseur that transferred his wine tasting skills (swirl, smell, taste) to chili tasting). A great time was had by all 80 or so people that participated. I want to thank Gary and Judy Matson, Gary and Mary Ellen Weyermann, Bob and Judy Kline, Craig and Marge Purdy, Don and Jen Lorenzen, Frank Tremper, and my wife Sherry. Chili crew, well done! If you buy 20 tickets, your odds of winning the airplane are 1 in 200. Your chances of winning a prize are about 1 in 66. If you buy 100 tickets, your odds of winning the airplane are 1 in 40. Your chances of winning a prize are about 1 in 13. These odds are so much better than the lottery that it is unbelievable. Considering the Grand Prize has been appraised at $48,500, the risk reward ratio is pretty darn good. Final odds will be determined base on the total number of tickets actually issued.

The Official Rules and entry form are available on our web site at Ethanol Issue: If you have been following and/or participating in the ethanol issue in the Montana Legislature, it seems that we have won one for general aviation. Rep. Bob Bergren, the sponsor of HB 464, prefaced his introduction of the ethanol bill with an announcement that his bill would exclude 91 octane fuel from ethanol. Representative Bob Bergren has agreed to amend his bill as written and exempt 91 octane from ethanol. He made this statement for the record at the hearing. Big Bar Airstrip Work Party: Join us for a mid-winter work party Saturday, February 26, 2005 at Big Bar airstrip in Hell s Canyon. Bring tools for cutting brush and digging rocks and cactus. We ll meet around 11am and work until we think of something better to do. This work party is highly weather dependent, so keep in touch to make sure it is possible. Some of us will camp and explore the area and depart Sunday. Fly Idaho! warns: This strip is suitable for Super Cub, 180, and 206 type aircraft. Not recommended for inexperienced pilots. So be careful and get prior advice and instruction if you need it. Conrad Burns (R-Mont.) has been selected to chair the aviation subcommittee of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. With Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska chairing the full committee, we have two very important allies in the Senate, said Jon Hixson, AOPA vice president of legislative affairs. Stevens is a pilot and a staunch defender of general aviation from a state where GA is frequently the only way to connect local communities. Burns has been very helpful to general aviation as well, with strong support for protecting GA from excessive security initiatives, ensuring the future availability of backcountry airstrips, and relief for GA businesses hurt by the 9/11 terror attacks. Oops! If it s legal under the FARs, does that mean you can do it? An Arizona flight instructor is learning a tough lesson that the state may prohibit what the feds don t. The instructor and a passenger allegedly dropped flour bombs on some buddies engaged in paintball combat in the Tonto National Forest. But nearby residents saw the white powder and thought terrorists were dropping anthrax into a nearby reservoir. While FAR doesn t prohibit dropping something from an aircraft, if reasonable precautions are taken to avoid injury or damage to persons or property, local laws do. According to AOPA Chief Counsel John Yodice, federal regulations do not preempt local law when it comes to reckless flying or flying while impaired. The Arizona pilot and passenger are facing multiple misdemeanor counts for the stunt. And the pilot is under FAA investigation. Ever stop to think, and then forget to start again? May I Fly Your Airplane? By Bob Mackey, Falcon Insurance AgencyIf you re like most pilots, you probably don t plan to have someone else flying your airplane. Most of the pilots I know are pretty particular about their airplanes and letting someone else fly their airplane is out of the question. In fact, I heard one of my friends tell another pilot when asked if he would let someone else fly his airplane, No, sorry my insurance will not allow other pilots to fly my airplane. I knew my friend s aircraft insurance policy because I m his insurance agent and when I reminded him his insurance policy contained an Open Pilot Warranty, which would allow other pilots to fly his airplane he told me, look, I d rather blame my insurance company than tell a pilot friend that I don t want him to fly my airplane. Fair enough. I d probably do the same thing to avoid damaging a friendship.

3 Page 3 International Young Eagles Day, June 11, 2005: Since 1994, International Young Eagles Day (IYED) has become a focal point for Young Eagle activities. This year is no exception. We would like to encourage all Chapters to plan an event on or near June 11. During the past 11 years, an average of more than 9,000 Young Eagles have taken flight on IYED alone. Help us continue to make IYED a success for EAA and Young Eagles. It IS as bad as you think and they are out to get you! Tax Time: Remember that certain activities within the Young Eagles program are tax deductible. The IRS has ruled that volunteer Young Eagle pilots can deduct direct, out-of-pocket expenses actually incurred that are in direct connection with and solely attributed to the YE Program. Please share this information with all of your Young eagles pilots and volunteers. Consciousness: That annoying time between naps. Saturday Fly-outs The Saturday Fly-outs are back! February 12, 8 planes flew to Plains for a start of the 2005 years activities, after following several weeks of weather cancellations. This years schedule will include a variety of events near, far, dirt strips, large paved strips, meals, flying events, special interest activities, and some overnights (camping and motel).
