Our club has been known as the Ultra Light Squadron of America for over 30 years. However, after a majority vote of our membership our club is now officially known as the Ultra Light Sport Pilot of America, keeping the original initials of USA. This has a significant impact as to whom we represent in our club. In the past our club s name represented only the sport of ultra light flying. It did not however represent the members who fly Light Sport planes. With the change of our clubs name (however painful it may have been for some) we now correctly identify who we are by representing both the Ultra Light and Light Sport aviation sport. I wish to say thank you to all who participated in this difficult but historical event. I would like to take the time to address something that has significantly impacted aviation. In the past Bob Chase our safety director has addressed the importance of drones and their effects either positive or negative on general aviation. His plea of caution needs to be taken seriously. An article printed on February 9, 2016 by USA Today head lined the paper Drones Eclipse Piloted Planes The article stated the FAA now reports there are more registered Drones in America than there are registered aircraft. FAA reports there are over 325,000 registered drones as apposed to 320,000 registered aircraft. FAA also acknowledges the registration covers all of the drones a person owns. It is estimated the average drone operator owns 1 ½ drones. They stated drones are (Continued on page 4)

2 Secretary s Report for February 6, 2015 Meeting called to order at 10:30. Officers present are Gary Pittman, Frank Mamone, Mike King, Jim Farthing, and Jim Shepherd Guests: John Sanga, Ron and Carolyn (Mock) Bova Joe Mickalizzi who bought Ron Kildebeck s hangar and plane President: Called the February meeting to order. He welcomed members and visitors. President called for a motion to approve January minutes as published in the Ultralog; so approved. Treasurer: Gave financial report for January; President called for a motion to approve; so approved. Sgt-at-Arms: John Kratz bought Frank Mamone s Quicksilver Sport and Hangar (H16). John Karavoll bought Bryan Harmon s Sky Ranger. Joe Mickalizzi bought Ron Kildebeck s hangar and plane (H8) OLD BUSINESS 1. Hangar move from the east side of the road has been approved by the Airport. Quick Covers has reportedly agreed to tear-down, move and rebuild the hangars on the west side for $1000 per hangar. The Airport indicated they want this done soon so they can clear the area east of the road for parking. There are currently three member owned hangars on the east side and one trailer to be moved. Secretary will notify appropriate individuals. 2. Cameras are up and running thanks to John Mock. The club authorized John Mock to buy a new dollies camera to replace the existing defective camera. 3. Doug Bauer has provided proofs of possible club shirt designs. Designs will be submitted to members for voting on style and color. 4. Fly-out to Borrego Valley Airport has been rescheduled to March 18, 19 OTHER REPORTS: 1. John Kratz was voted in as a new member in good standing; John owns a Quicksilver MX Sport hangared at Perris. 2. Because of on-going repair to Borrego Valley runway/taxiway the February flyout was rescheduled to March 18, The club will have an annual fly-in April 2. There will be no club meeting that day. 4. The membership voted to change the Club s DBA from Ultralight Squadron of America to Ultralight Sport Pilots of America and keep the identifier USA. 5. Roy Lara rejoined our club. Larry Preston is his Sponsor. 6. Our condolences to Bob Baker on the passing of his mother last month. She was 91 years old. PROGRAM No program scheduled The meeting was adjourned at 10:55 am Page 3

According to the FAA there are about 7,000 airplanes in the sky anytime during the day along with untold number of drones. What is alarming is that FAA receives about 100 reports per month from aircraft pilots who say they spotted drones flying near them. However, FAA recognizes it is difficult to trace them to their owner to take any enforcement action. The bottom line is to be aware of your surroundings especially at low altitudes. Because most of the drones are small in size, it is almost impossible to see them. However, you must be diligent in spotting them before they become a hazard. Fly safe, fly often. 5 New Club Members John Kratz New member John Kratz joined our club in October John purchased Frank Mamone s Quicksilver and hangar. Here he is in the hangar working on his plane s fuel system. John has been very active in our club. Mike King is his sponsor. Roy Lara Roy Lara has rejoined our club and will be keeping his plane in its usual tiedown. Roy s sponsor is Larry Preston. Welcome back to the Club Joe Mickalizzi (No Photo) Joe joined our club as a new prospective member February 6. Joe purchased Ron Kildebeck s GT-400 and hangar. Mike King is his sponsor. Joe has his own business lowering go-pro cameras down well shafts as deep as 2000 feet. Welcome to our club Joe. He will be voted into full membership at the May meeting. Page 5
