1 EAA CHAPTER 10 SINCE 1955 Board Member s Report Greetings fellow aviators! I hope this finds you well in this new year, and looking forward to the 2017 flying season. If you are receiving this letter, it is due to the efforts of our Secretary, Mike Aichele, as he has chosen to revive our monthly newsletter, a challenging undertaking that requires a fair deal of time to assemble and publish. If you see Mike, be sure to tell him thanks for his efforts, and let s all pitch in to contribute from time to time so that he has fresh and interesting information to share with our group. Project reports, technical writings and other aviation related material is preferred, but anything you think the group might find interesting would be appreciated. Mike s contact info can be found in the contacts page in the back of this issue. As I write this, the sun is shining and the temp is warm, so I hope to get out to the hangar for some airplane time today. As is typical for this time of year, these warm days are few and far between, but I know that better days are just ahead, and I am really looking forward to this year for my project an our chapter. Many of you may recall that we are sponsoring a youth group called the Aviation Explorers, and that we held several events last fall that were really fun and educational. From model rockets to movie nights and R/C aircraft, we ve had a lot of fun learning and getting to know each other. We currently have 10 very motivated individuals that have participated in every event so far. This month we are inviting the group to our pancake breakfast to involve them more in the EAA s activities. Rob Summers, a retired Air Traffic Controller and EAA 10 member, will be coordinating tours of the Tulsa International control tower, an event that this group has really been looking forward to. As we get further into spring, we hope to tour the airport with the group, maybe letting them peek in on a couple of member s shops and projects, and eventually get into some aviation theory and get them flying later in the year. We ll keep the group posted as the schedule becomes clear, but the continued support of the chapter is greatly appreciated. The roof repairs that we made last fall appear to be working well. No leaks on the floor since we ve applied the sealant, and the white color should help to keep temps down a bit. Our heating system appears to be working, but has given us fits a time or two this winter. We initially thought it had something to do with the Nest thermostat, but a professional opinion suggests otherwise, and that we might need to consider extensive repairs to our outside unit. Just be aware that if you need to use the facility during the remainder of the winter, you may want to preheat using the old heater above the loft if the main unit doesn t appear to be making heat. The thermostat is located right around the corner from the restrooms. Speaking of facility maintenance, we ll be planning a spring cleaning day sometime in the next few months. We really need to go through items in the storage room and give the entire place a good scrub down. There are also a few repair projects (patio roof, screens, etc.) that we ll need to address. Stay tuned for more details, and please plan to participate in these efforts if possible. This month s meeting will be Monday, February 20. Our speaker will be wing walker Ashley Key of Greg Shelton Airshows based in Collinsville, OK. The pancake breakfast will be the following Saturday, February 25. I hope to see you at these events! 3 P a g e 3 WHERE IS ROGER WHITE S BOLKOW NOW? By Harold Bickford President of EAA 569 As Rocky the Flying Squirrel (Rocket J. Squirrel, Esq.) used to say, and now for something completely different we offer herewith a short story on how a Bolkow MFI-9 HB came to end up in the southeast corner of Nebraska. Years back I had read about the Bolkow 208/MFI-9/MFI-9HB. It along with the similar appearing Tipsy Nipper always looked like intriguing designs, the sort that stay in those inner recesses of the mind. Sometimes they even come forth in an Aha! moment. The particular Bolkow in question, an MFI-9HB, was discovered via an article on William Wynn's flycorvair.net website. Being a fan of the Corvair (auto and air vehicles) from the early 1960s on, the I wonder questions started flowing after reading of what Roger White, EAA #41, had started with an MFI-9HB/Corvair. William pointed out that the aircraft was available (later we would find out that it had been available for a while) and included the contact information. He had met Roger previously and made clear that Roger is a treasure in the homebuilding world and EAA. My wife Edi and I talked about the Bolkow for a while then decided to at least make a call and find out more. Speculation would not do; good information would be the key as to a decision. We just did not want to say after the fact could've, would've, should've. After about fifteen minutes of talking with Roger we determined that going to see the aircraft was the thing to do. A six-hour drive (stops included) with trailer was very doable trip. Consider too that here in the central plains that kind of drive is often considered an almost local drive. To contrast, growing up in Maine a somewhat shorter (ok, much shorter) drive would have been considered local! So, on the 28 th of November we were on the road to Grove, Oklahoma. Arriving around 5pm, we were able to find the area where Roger and his wife EJ lived. In fact, we watched them back the PT Cruiser out from the garage of their home as we were closer than had been thought. Often when going to a new place getting situated is not that easy. Roger and EJ had graciously offered to have us stay with them and repeated the offer when we arrived. Sensing that buying would be more than just obtaining an airplane we accepted while offering that meals were on us. Over dinner and during the evening we came to realize just how much more than simply buying an airplane this experience was turning out to be. The dovetailing of life experiences and a love of flying and aviation became a connecting point between two lifetime members EAA #41 and EAA # and their wives. The big difference is that my activity has mostly been over the last five years; Roger's goes back to when I was a young boy. For him the Bolkow was build #7; for us the Bolkow will be build #1.5 or thereabouts. The next morning, November 29, we were up early to start loading the trailer with some tools, parts and the all-important plans and documentation for the Bolkow. Then it was on to Sandridge Airpark where the Bolkow was actually hangered. There after lunch we met with several members of EAA Chapter 10 out of Owasso, OK. Roger of course was instrumental in establishing Chapter 10 so here we were again intersecting with history. At least one member-jim Ballew- we had met previously at one of William Wynn's Corvair colleges. In short order the volunteer group of four - Ken Smith, Art Saunders, Jim Ballew and Chuck Stephenson- had the aircraft in the trailer ready for the trip back to the southeast corner of Nebraska aka Auburn, NE. It was still light (late afternoon) so after bidding adieu we decided to make our way back figuring we would be back by 10pm and that is how it worked out. Roger and EJ also had wanted to be back home before nightfall so it all worked well. A couple of days after arriving home it was time to take the Bolkow to the hangar. With the help of our friend Michael, we offloaded the plane into the hangar where it now is undergoing the beginning stages of reassembly, fitting and finishing. Soon (relatively speaking) we look forward to obtaining an airworthiness certificate and begin flight test for the required 40 hours. It will be time well spent exploring the flight envelope and developing the pilot operating handbook. Certainly, an early destination would be Owasso, OK for a Chapter 10 Fly-In.

4 P a g e 4 BOLKOW cont. Having a one of one kind aircraft is a neat experience. Knowing that we can be a part of history makes it all the better. Understanding that we can continue such history is the best part. Paul Poberezny always said that the airplanes brought us together but the people were what made everything work. Learn, build, fly is that EAA tradition. Pretty good journey for a kid who grew up in Maine and ended up in Nebraska. More to come in the future...
