More pictures of the B-17 on page 7 In This Edition By the time you read this, the B-17 will be in St. Louis and heading for other destinations on the schedule. For those of you that participated and volunteered I know the guys were grateful. The one thing I wasn't really expecting to experience during the time I volunteered were the number of former service men that had actually flown on these massive aircraft and the stories they told. It was humbling to say the least and I admire their courage. We hope to have more about the visit in the next issue. My first major fly in Was Sun N Fun in April of It was a truly amazing experience for me and my newly minted RV 6A. Beautiful weather, after a long, cold winter and acres of airplanes. Everyone had stories to tell and the enthusiasm was amazing. Who could ask for anything more. I'm afraid time, commercialization, and the economy has not been kind to Sun N Fun. It was depressing to see how few airplanes were in the various parking areas. The homebuilt area was at best 20% full midweek. On a positive note there were pretty good crowds milling around all week and the camp ground Continued on page 2! PAGE! 1

I saw and talked to Bhrent a couple of times during the week, he and I being the only representatives of Chapter 10 this year. Hopefully things will recover. Will I go back? Probably so. I stayed with my youngest sister for the week which was very pleasant. A twofer for sure. It's hard to beat Florida weather in April if you can get there. Note to SNF, don't ever schedule in March ever ever again. May 1st to 15th we are in Long Beach, Ca. For those of you who have never flown out here a piece of advise. Don't!!!!!!!! I talked to six SoCal controllers from Banning Pass (which was on fire at the time and declared a TFR as I was clearing the area) into Long Beach. I left this area permanently in 1978 after spending 8 years here. Since then everything has been torn down and rebuilt except my old house in Huntington Beach, the Flying Tiger Hangar (now FedEx) on LAX, and the FBO hangar on KLGB which is now a fuel farm. John Nys John is a long time member of chapter 10. 3 JERRY THOMAS AND HIS RANS PROJECT This is the fourth month of Rans S6S progress report. We spent most of last month in California, family reunion and Fishing. Our son graduated from Cal Poly at San Louis Obispo. We mounted the wings to the Fuselage to check Form and fit prior to Fabric covering (See attached pictures). This step in building paid off as we found a couple of items that would have been a big problem if the wing was covered. Attached the Aileron and Flap controls to the Cabin cable assy. The Rans instructions are lacking in this section of the manual. Plan for this next month is to start the Cabin Assy building, which includes the plastic interior, seats and Panel. We started laying out the plastic interior and purchased a hot knife to shape the plastic to fit the Fuselage. Hopefully we can make up some time and get back on schedule. The English pilot told me something that will make all American pilots feel better about our fuel prices. He pays twelve ($12) American dollars a gallon for 100LL fuel. I love Gundys!!!! Still need to sell my RV8A. A pilot in England called several times on the RV8. The deal breaker was the ECI Titan experimental engine. England requires a certified power plant in all aircraft. YOUNG EAGLES DAY participating. Had a real good ground crew to keep the area safe. Had lots of smiling faces before and lots more after taking their YE flights. Again, Thanks to a great ground crew and my wife, Elaine, for doing a lot of paper work. Tom We had great weather for flying the Young Eagles. Started flying at 9 AM PANCAKE VOLUNTEERS and flew till 12:30 PM on the last flight. We flew a total of 48 YE with 6 pilots More pictures on page 4 For those of you that are expert pancake flippers or sausage rollers, we need you! Please do your best to volunteer for one of our upcoming breakfast events. It would be greatly appreciated by those who are doing it the majority of the time.! PAGE! 3

6 Heading into July and it feels more like spring than early summer a very welcome extension to the normally HOT building and flying season. Hope all of you are enjoying this great weather! I m sure that the heat will return before we know it. We just wrapped up the B-17 tour stop a few days ago and the volunteer turnout was great! Crowds were not at the level we had experienced in past years, but many people made it out to see the airplane. Media coverage was excellent as Aluminum Overcast earned several television news spots and articles in a variety of local newspapers. I d like to offer my most sincere thanks to our members and volunteers for helping to get the word out and for coming out to support the event, and also to the crew of Aluminum Overcast, our local media and of course our patrons. At last report, Aluminum Overcast and her crew, accompanied by Jack Kearbey and Larry Trusty, had arrived safely at St. Louis Downtown Airport and was poised and ready to participate in Fair St. Louis, a three day long Fourth of July Celebration. Within a few weeks of this printing, our annual convention will begin and the world s busiest airport will be buzzing with activity. If you plan to attend Oshkosh, please come to the meeting and let us know so that others might be encouraged to go if not this year, perhaps in the coming years. Also, if you do plan to head north, we would r e a l l y appreciate member s s t o r i e s a n d photos from the show take lots of pictures and plan to send a short blurb to the editor. Speaking of the newsletter, we have gone through a bit of reorganization in this area. For those who attended last month s meeting, you know that Jim and Edna Pogue have requested some help with this task. Lee Odom has volunteered his services where the publishing duties are concerned, but we will need to provide him with relevant content in order to accomplish this task while continuing to keep the pages interesting and entertaining. Being a relatively new member, Lee can t be expected to know of things that are going on within the chapter having said this, we would really appreciate any content that could be offered in support of this effort. The board, members and readers would really appreciate your participation. As mentioned above, Oshkosh stories would be a great start perhaps we can do a couple pages on member s reports in the August issue, but we ll need everyone to send in their writings and photos. I know how tough it can be to search for interesting material for the newsletter, so let s all help out however we can. By doing so, we really promote conversation within our group as we make each other aware of the wide variety of things going on within the chapter. I ll do my part to assist can we count you in too? This month s meeting will be held Monday, July 15 at 7:30.
