2 I believe the 2013 Ford Airport Day went really well this year. Thanks to some extra help from management at Ford Airport, our advertising costs were offset a bit more than usual, which means more of the overall revenue stayed with our chapter. The gate was down a little bit from past years, but the adult flights went over great and were a decent revenue source for us. On the Monday after our event I compiled a list of items that we can work on for 2014 to be more efficient and better prepared. Tim Howen, our airport manager, was very happy with ALL aspects of the show this year, including the professional way we handled ourselves in the traffic pattern during the congested times conducting flights. He (and many others) thought the expanded kid activities were a great addition to our show. The only disappointment I had was our sponsoring radio station, as I did not hear one blip prior to the show of the recorded program I did after Labor Day, like I have done every year in the past. Hard to believe I was just that lucky (or unlucky) to not catch a single radio spot. I firmly believe the intersection signs do us more good than the "paid for" advertising. There was an posted on my U.P. Truck Center Facebook page with very complimentary remarks about the adult flights and how much attendees to our event appreciated the flight option to those not qualified for the Young Eagles program. A special thank you to those giving up their time (including our registration volunteers), airplane, and fuel expense to accommodate all the flights, for both Y.E.'s and adults. I think this may be the first year we were able to get every flight request completed during the show. Another area we would have had some serious challenges was volunteers, specifically the gates. The Civil Air Patrol wing from Menominee came up and did an awesome job covering those areas for us. I cannot honestly see how we could have pulled this off without them. I asked Ted Fornetti to do a "maintenance flight" with the Northwood's Airlifeline twin, giving all the kids and one adult a ride. The most unselfish adult left, decided to stay back since there were not enough seats, so I took him up in the Bonanza and he got to fly as well. I think they all had pretty nice smiles on their faces as they headed back to Menominee! Will has had this newsletter ready for several days, but I just got back from a week trip to the Carolina's, visiting family in Asheville, NC and attending the annual LOBO (Lancair Owners and Builders Organization) / Lancair convention in Greenville SC. I also spent a half day at my painters shop over in Milan TN, looking at and snapping pictures of Lancair IVP's in various stages of build and/or paint. All in all, it was a very productive and enjoyable week, other than a couple ILS approaches to minimums into the mountainous Asheville airport and the 60 MPH headwinds coming home. In retrospect, the flying part was still more fun than a day and a half of driving each way. See everyone at the Crystal Falls Airport for our October Meeting 2

3 Editor s Notes Will Kroeger wkroeger@alphacomm.net Do you need an EAA Technical Counselor or Flight Advisor? Are you building or restoring an aircraft? Are you designing or redesigning all or part of an aircraft? Are you getting ready to fly a new or restored aircraft? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then you may need a Technical Counselor or Flight Advisor. What is a Technical Counselor? A person with the education, experience and training to convince the EAA headquarters that they are competent to assist and inspect EAA member s aircraft. What can a Technical counselor do for you? 1. Inspect your aircraft before you close up any structure to be sure that the inside will be as airworthy as the outside. 2. Inspect your aircraft before the FAA or DAR inspects it so that it has a better chance of passing its final airworthiness inspection. 3. Evaluate if you are using materials that are appropriate for use in an aircraft. 4. Some counselors can help you with the math required on design problems or weight and balance. 5. Recommend tests that should be performed during construction to assure the structure is sound. 6. Recommend tests that should be performed before final inspection and flight. What is a Flight Advisor? A person with the education, experience and training to convince the EAA headquarters that they are competent to advise EAA members regarding flight test of their own aircraft. What can a Flight Advisor do for you? 1. Evaluate your flight experience to help you decide if you are the proper test pilot for your new or restored aircraft. 2. Help you select a test pilot. 3. Suggest training that will help you get ready to flight test your aircraft. 4. Help you pick an airport that is appropriate for the flight testing of your aircraft. 5. Set up preflight tests to be sure the aircraft is ready to fly. 6. Develop a list of safety equipment and people to assist you or your test pilot in the event of an emergency. 7. Develop a flight test protocol so that you have a plan for flight testing, know what type of tests to perform, know what type and how to gather data necessary to complete aircraft performance information required by the FAA. Would you like a Technical Counselor or Flight Advisor to help you? Well, our Chapter does not have one, but you could look up one on the EAA website. I did and found several in the local area - Don Stewart (TC & FA) in Vulcan and Bill Landry (TC) in Gwinn. Our Chapter does have an opening for a Technical Counselor. Please check the application on the EAA website to see if you qualify and consider volunteering for the Chapter position. 3

4 October Meeting - Fly-in, Camp-out at the Iron County Airport (50D) South of Crystal Falls. We are trying to revitalize this event which started years ago as a fall color flight. We will start with a fire and socializing at dusk on Friday October 11th at the airport. A Chapter meeting will be held around 11:00am on Saturday followed by a Chilly Dump. Fun will continue with another camp fire and socializing at dusk on Saturday. Sunday we ll clean up and head for home. Hopefully we can get some flying in this year (Last year weather was misting with rain/snow.) We want this event to be about the fun and social side of the EAA and not the work. With a growing number of reports from law-abiding pilots stopped by armed federal agents on the ramp, AOPA has prepared a kneeboard checklist on how to handle the situation. It seems Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents have ordered the stop and search of several pilots and aircraft even though they never crossed a border. Some were asked why they never filed a flight plan and were asked to provide information not required by the FAA. The CBP has used local and national authorities to make these illegal stops.
