2 News from an EAA Chapter 766 Member to Bridgett N. from Emily B. After two weeks of trying to get in flight time with the weather and runway closures, I finally did my first solo flight today! I was trying to perfect my landings last week and it finally clicked. I thought it went really well, and I get to do it all over again on Thursday. Just thought I'd give you a quick update on how it s going! As you may recall, Emily B. became a member of the EAA Chapter 766 in April of Emily is originally from Cedar Grove and is attending college at UW-Madison. Emily is one of our past recipients of the EAA Chapter 766 Scholarships. Congratulations on your first solo flights and your future private pilot s license. Saturday Morning Hanger Talk with Coffee at the AHC On Saturday, November 25, the EAA Chapter 766 held its first hanger talk with coffee and sweets. Among the attendees were Kent from the Sheboygan Flying Club and Miles K. with his Citabria from Watertown. Chris R. reported that Miles flies for K2 in Alaska during the season. The Hanger Talk with coffee and sweets will continue Saturday mornings from 9 am to 11 am at the Aviation Heritage Center. Page 2

3 EAA Chapter 766 IMC Club The EAA Chapter 766 IMC Club held a safety meeting on November 6, The monthly IMC question was discussed, a IFR scenario (Where s My Gear?) was presented with open discussion following, copying an IFR clearance was simulated and it was concluded with a IMC Review. To complete a phase of WINGS, the participant needs to complete three Knowledge credits and three Flight credits (not hours). The people that facilitated the meeting were Tony Kolar, CFII and Dave Rudd, IMC Club Coordinator. The monthly question involved flying into Wooster, Ohio with an unexpected simple clearance on Runway 28 Approach. Discussion included a not permitted procedure turn without further clearance. The scenario involved a Piper Cherokee 180 flying from Rock Island, RI to Providence, RI which has large commercial traffic. The weather was 1500 ft. overcast with winds out of the north at 14 and gusting 22. The alternate airport would be New Bedford, MA. Upon takeoff, landing gear may have come off when a gust affected the planes take off. Tony reminded everyone the three most important things to remember: Aviate, Navigate and Communicate. He also reminded everyone that the PIC is ultimately responsible. A good rule to follow: if you need to be somewhere at a specific time, always have a back-up plan if you are flying General Aviation. Discussions included when to call an emergency, testing the brakes, knowing your aircraft emergency Landing, fly to an airport with a higher ceiling, burning off fuel, and so on. Tony discussed the Copying an IFR clearance using CRAFT (Clearance limit, Route, Altitude, Frequency and Transponder). The following items should be done before calling for clearance: 1) Write down your destination s airport ICAO identifier 2) Get ATIS. Need to tell Clearance Delivery or Ground the ATIS 3) Study the departure procedures. Tip have SIDs out when calling 4) Need the departure frequency Tony wanted everyone to be aware of the TRA (Temporary Reserved Airspace) which is different from TFR. The website will explain the special use airspace. A more thorough discussion will occur at the next IMC meeting on December 4, Page 3

4 An Old Eagles Flight from KSBM A pilot and member of the EAA Chapter 766, Kyle Hokel and I discussed different planes comparing yolk control to stick control. He and three other pilots had built an RV-10 experimental plane that uses a stick control. The process took about 3 years using and learning different techniques of building. During our discussion, Kyle generously offered a flight to compare the yolk control to the stick control. Immediately I said YES! The weather is ultimately in command when flying in VFR conditions. On Monday, October 23, 2017, the weather cooperated and we took to the air. As any good pilot knows, check lists need to be followed on the ground, before and at startup, taxiing, take off, flying and finally landing. On the ground, a pilot checks all movable and non-movable parts including the fuel for water or debris. It was time to bring the RV-10 out of the hanger. Kyle pointed out the best practice of where to step on the plane and how to enter the cockpit. Once in the cockpit, the seatbelts were fastened and a checklist indicated the correct positions of the switches. The engine was started, but before moving, making sure the oil temperature was up to the appropriate level. After traveling cautiously on the tarmac, Kyle announced to Sheboygan Traffic his location and intentions. We observed visually and listened through our headsets for other planes in the vicinity. While on the taxi hold position to runway 31, Kyle brought the RPMs of the RV-10 to a certain level to test and then reduced it back down. He announced we were taking off and flying in a southern direction. The flight was smooth with little wind. The clouds were blocking the sunshine but we could still see for miles. Kyle brought us up to 3000 ft. and allowed me to experience the RV-10 stick control. It was easy to control and with Kyle s permission I did a few slow turns in both directions. After a period of time, we headed back to KSBM and Kyle landed the plane smoothly. We then taxied back to refuel and ready the plane for the next flight. After exiting the plane, Kyle maneuvered the plane back into the hanger in time to attend the FAA Safety Meeting at the AHC. The flight with Kyle will always be remembered by me, a wannabe pilot. I have enjoyed aviation my whole life and any opportunity to fly is always appreciated. Page 4

5 The Redbird FMX Simulator at the AHC The Redbird FMX, three-axis, full motion flight simulator is located at the Aviation Heritage Center of Wisconsin, KSBM Sheboygan County Airport. The FMX is easy to operate, and you can program it to fly in any weather conditions, from light winds and VFR, to IFR with low overcast, low visibility, and heavy snow. You can fly to and from virtually any airport in the world! Introductory flights at no cost are available. Visitors can call Jay Hoogstra to be sure someone is available who can give an introductory flight. The purchase of a 5-hour block of sim time affords the privilege of operating the sim solo and of consuming fractions of an hour. The purchase of less than a 5-hour block does not allow for solo sim operation and for payment purposes, whole hours must be purchased. (Example: If 1.5 hours of sim time is used, 2 hours must be paid for.) For individual hour purchases, an AHC instructor must be employed to take responsibility and insure bookkeeping records are kept correctly for purchases of less than 5 hours of block time. Prior to Jan 1, 2018, 5-hour blocks sell for $125. After this date, 5-hour blocks sell for $150. Less than 5 hours are sold at the rate of $25 / hr. now and after Jan 1, $30 / hr. When buying by the hour, fractions of an hour remaining cannot be saved for a potential next flight, again due to administrative costs and you must have an AHCW instructor for these flights. 6 The Sheboygan Flying Club On November 20, 2017, the EAA Chapter 766 moved the membership meeting to the Sheboygan Flying Club hanger at the Sheboygan County Airport. The 24 people in attendance were introduced to the Sheboygan Flying Club by Eldon Isely, one of the owners of the club. The club was started to offer affordable flights to a number of pilots and future pilots. A few of the members of the Sheboygan Flying Club were also present. Eldon stated there were 45 members in the club that share two airplanes: a Piper Warrior ($115 per hour) and a Piper Archer II ($135 per hour). A third plane will be purchased in the near future to accommodate the members. Flying clubs help to keep the high costs of flying in check. For that reason, flying clubs are becoming more popular nationwide. The cost of the Sheboygan Flying Club involves an annual membership fee of $150. There is also a $25 monthly fee that is used for the rent and maintenance of the hanger, utilities and so on. For those entering aviation and want to acquire their Private Pilot s License, Eldon offers lessons for $40 per hour. He also gives Flight Reviews, Instrument Currency, Private Through ATP and Redbird Simulator Instruction. One of the attendees, Lee K., reminded people to acquire Renters Insurance when joining a flying club. One of the companies that offer the insurance is AOPA. The cost is around $180 per year. 7 T-33 Nose Section Work Party Work resumed on the T-33 Nose Section on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 with Ralph Cowin, Randy Krentz, Dave Rudd and Al Schafer. The team secured the canopy for cockpit work, removed bad fuselage panels, analyzed structural damage, re-riveted panels and started work on the ejection seats. Dave uncovered more structural damage and contemplated repairs, Ralph countersunk and re-riveted some of the salvageable patches and Randy started the messy job of prepping the ejection seats for paint. The next scheduled session will be Tuesday, November 28 from 6-8 pm. The entire team will hopefully be in place by then. Members of the EAA Chapter 766 and other volunteers are welcome to help with this project. EAA Chapter 766 Christmas Party The annual EAA Chapter 766 Christmas Party will be held in January Kathy V. and Chris R. are currently coordinating plans for the location and date. Information will be given to the members as soon as possible. Please attend the party and enjoy the comradery of your fellow members. Page 7
