3 EAA Chapter 766 Program On March 20, 2017, Dan Dominguez spoke of his life s adventures with aviation and setting a world record by flying around the world in 93 days. He started flying at the age of 14. The day Dan turned 17, he earned his private pilot's license, and several months later, he and Chris Wall took a flight to Ketchikan, Alaska, in a Cessna 172. At this point, because of Alaska, both Dan and Chris made the decision to fly around the world. Finding sponsors would be a challenge. They needed to have a legal nonprofit status to accomplish this. In 1998, they put together the Global Advancement Foundation. It was and continued to be essentially a two-man operation. Chris Wall, then an electrical engineering student at Rice University in Houston, and Dan, an economics major at the University of Rochester, persuaded officials at the Rochester school to donate a small office and a phone line. They then began planning the project and raising money in earnest. They found that no one would back them without a plane. On the internet they located an Aero Commander 560E and purchased it for $15,000. It was one of the ugliest planes Dan had ever seen. From sunrise to sunset, they repaired and prepared the plane for the around the world flight. They made it a school project. They would invite friends out to help strip and polish the plane, tear out the interior, tune the engines, replace hoses, electronics and everything else. A case of beer helped to quench the thirst. Despite all the work, the project continued to struggle financially. Chris and Dan began giving speeches at schools. They tried to encourage all the kids to make their dreams happen. The young pilots flew the Dreamcatcher to an air show in Oshkosh, Wis. in late July. Donations included $21,000 in camera gear from Rowe Photo in Rochester, radios and global positioning equipment from Garmin, a $25,000 engine overhaul from Nick Carter of Tennessee. They had over $100,000 in equipment and services donated. They finally accomplished their dream of flying around the world in 93 days setting a world record for their age. The members of the EAA Chapter 766 listened intently to all the adventures Dan described. Page 3

4 EAA Chapter 766 IMC Club The EAA Chapter 766 IMC Club held a meeting on March 6, A IFR Scenario was presented and an open discussion continued. The program was called May Day Above the Clouds. The people that facilitated the meeting were Tony Kolar, CFI-I and Dave Rudd, IMC Club Coordinator. The scenario involved a flight from Georgetown, TX. A plane had just been returned from servicing. The pilot reached an altitude of 7000 ft. when a bang was heard. Immediately the engine stopped and the avionics panels went dark. Not enough oil in the engine may have caused the incident. The question was raised, what do you do next? Tony emphasized the three most important things to do in any incident Aviate, Navigate and Communicate. What else should the PIC do? Attempt to restart the engine? Is the fuel selector where it should be? Should rebooting the Avionics be tried? Is knowledge of guide speed of the plane important? Should an emergency be called? (Channel 7700) Everyone agreed those were all good things to try. Tony stressed that no matter why the incident happened, the sole responsibility lies with the PIC. The PIC is responsible for the preflight check before any flight. It was announced that the VOR s at SBM and MTW are being Decommissioned. A discussion of using ILS in place of the VOR for IFR was brought forth. That sparked another discussion of the importance of GPS. Portable GPS units like ipads use Fore Flight (Basic version is $100/year) and FlyQ for navigation. Android users find My Radar (free without maps) to be helpful. Thank you to all who attended the meeting. Page 4

5 T-33 Nose Section Restoration Project The EAA Chapter 766 held its first meeting for the T-33 Nose Section Restoration Project on Saturday, March 4, The group discussed the goals and how the project should proceed. The group gathered and organized existing tools. Kyle will be building a work bench to accommodate the different jobs needed to restore the Nose Section. Al will locate a vise to use on the completed bench. The session on Saturday, March 4 went from 10 am to 12 pm. The future sessions will also be on Saturdays from 10 am to 12 pm. Those who want to come in at different times to work on their own are welcome to do so. Al Schafer is coordinating the Restoration Project and can be reached at manitouharbor@aol.com. This will be a learning project of proper techniques for repairing sheet metal and more. The aspects of repairing will be discussed and then completed. It will be an ongoing project and all volunteers will be welcomed. Thank you to the volunteers at the first meeting. Page 5

6 T-33 Nose Section Restoration Project (cont d) The EAA Chapter 766 held its second work party for the T-33 Nose Section Restoration Project on Saturday, March 18, Al was locating the unnecessary parts of the interior forward area while Kathy used a number of different tools to remove the parts. Kyle was making a sturdy workbench on wheels to accommodate this and other future projects. Dave inspected the glass portion of the cockpit to compile a plan for restoration. Randy Krentz starting working on the subpanel restoration. Al Schafer is coordinating the Restoration Project and can be reached at manitouharbor@aol.com. 10 North American Airline DC-3 comes to the AHC The nonprofit Aviation Heritage Center at the Sheboygan County Airport has purchased one of only three known remaining Douglas DC-3 aircraft that flew for the airline. If all goes as planned, the plane, which operated with the airline from 1953 to 1968, will be on permanent display at the museum and could be taken on a flying tour of the Wisconsin communities formerly served by the historic airline. There were only 600 DC-3 s, only 32 flew for North Central, only three of those are still flying, and we have one of them and we re going to bring it back to Wisconsin, Jon Helminiak, executive director of the aviation museum, said. We want to use it as a tool to educate people about North Central Airlines and the importance that North Central had to aviation in the Great Lakes and to expose what mainstream air travel was like in the '40s and '50s." The DC-3 flew for North Central Airlines as a passenger plane from 1953 to 1964 and then was reconfiguration into a cargo liner and utilized by the airline from 1965 to For the past 21 years, the DC-3 has been kept by an owner in southern California who has spent thousands restoring and repairing the aircraft. The owner, thrilled with the idea of restoring the plane to its roots, agreed to sell the plane to The Aviation Heritage Center for $175,000 well below his initial asking price. The museum is still in need of approximately $40,000 in donations to paint the aircraft back to its original colors and fly it to the Sheboygan County airfield. Approximately $230,000 has been raised so far, with much of it coming from former pilots and employees of the former Wisconsin airline. Donors to the project can choose to name a seat, window, engine or even the cockpit at various donation levels. While the windows have all been claimed, Helminiak said several seats, the engines, and the cockpit are still open to donors. For donation information, visit northcentraldc3.org.
