President Brian Crull called the meeting to order, the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Guests included Walter and Cameron Ney, Olivia Papich, Bruce Moss, and our speakers Keith Giles and Reg DuValle. Our treasurer was out of town on business so no treasurer s report was available. Young Eagle director Rob Morris read a thank you letter from parents whose children attended the May 19th Young Eagle event. Don Roberts gave a safety talk for the upcoming pancake breakfast. Plans were finalized for the June 16th Fly In. It was a very successful (I peeked) fly in. We are still in need a volunteer for the October pitch in. A small group is planning on attending the Frasca Fly-In on Saturday 6/23/12 in Urbana IL. Let Brian Crull know if interested in flying over with us, The meeting was quickly adjourned for the presentation by Keith Giles, son of a Tuskegee Red Tail pilot. 2 Page 2 2 HANGER FLYING The Chapter was invited to set up a booth at the Metropolitan Airport Day Open House. The weather was windy but nice and the crowds were great. Brian Crull and crew spoke to a large number of people at the booth and invited all to attend our upcoming EAA Pancake Fly-In on the 16th. Brian and Alan lifted so many children into his RV3, their backs were killing them by the end of the day. They said it was worth it to see the smiles on the kids faces and how happy the parents were to have their pictures taken.

3 3 I 80 - THE FIELD OF DREAMS: Keith Giles, son of a Tuskegee Airmen, accomplished Navy test pilot and currently a United Airlines Test Pilot was our guest speaker for June's EAA Chapter 67 meeting. Accompanying Keith was Reg DuValle, President of the Indianapolis Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc (TAI). Keith gave an excellent overview of the history and heroics of the Tuskegee Airmen and how despite discrimination and prejudice became one of the best and highest decorated fighter squadrons in the European Theatre of WWII. The bomber crews were always happy to see their "six" was covered by the Red Tails. Keith brought to life the many sacrifices made by the pilots and crew of the Red Tails with many anecdotal stories including those of his father and the other Red Tail pilots. It gave us all a greater sense of the accomplishments and appreciation for the daring and skills of the Red Tails. For more information about the Tuskegee Airmen from Indianapolis check out indytuskegee.org/ Our hope and plan is to get Keith to return and tell us of his exploits as a Navy Test Pilot and now as a United Airlines Test Pilot. I am sure it will make for a very interesting and exciting evening. Dec. 3, Christmas Dinner PRESIDENT S CORNER: PRESIDENT S CORNER: Pancakes, Planes and Lot's of People, put them all together and you have a fun Saturday morning at the Noblesville Airport. Chapter 67 set a new record for our Pancake Breakfast Fly In. Just when we thought that last years events were record setters this one blew them away. The numbers came in at close to 600 people paid to eat pancakes. And estimated 60 planes flew in with many of them being first time visitors. We also had many more people that attended that did not eat so the total number of people in attendance was much greater than 600. Larry Jacobi airport owner, estimated attendance at 1,000. This all would not have been possible without the hard work of all the Chapter members that came out to set up, and work the event. We had a great turn out on the Friday evening before to set up. The Chapter rewarded everyone that came out to work with dinner. We were able to get so much set up Friday evening that come Saturday morning there was little left to do other than get the pancakes mixed and the griddles hot. I want to give a special Thank You to Mike Hayden for organizing a fantastic crew to mix and cook the pancakes. To all of you that worked all morning either mixing batter or slaving over the hot griddles flipping pancakes, THANK YOU for your dedication and hard work. Jim Stohler kept the water and juice flowing all morning. Archie Kerr kept the coffee pots full. The addition of the chefs aprons that Mike Hayden brought really made the "Chefs" stand out and Mike in his Chefs Hat was perfect. We had gone thru 8 bags of pancake mix by 8:30 so I made a fast trip to Sam's Club to get more mix and while there I decided to get more sausages, just in case. I am glad I did because that just got us thru as we ended the day with only a handful of sausages left. Want numbers? We used 120 lbs of pancake mix, 48 lbs of sausages. 10 gals of syrup, 23 gallons of juice and 8 cases of water Allan Grabeman headed up the flight line parking. He and his Safety Crew were kept busy starting early when the first plane arrived at 7:10 am. There was a steady stream of planes all morning and everyone did a great job of getting the planes parked and marshaled out when they were ready to leave. A special thank you for Jeff Hammer and Allan Grabeman for designing and getting made the row parking markers. Having the rows marked with let

5 5 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4. -ters made telling the incoming pilots where to park so much easier. The side facing the crowd with the stop sign emblem and the words, Active Runway, Do Not Cross, seemed to keep the people from wandering out onto the runway. These were an investment that the Chapter made that will pay off in all future Fly Ins and will help ensure we continue to have a safe and accident free event. I welcome your suggestions or comments from things you observed during the event. What can we do to make it better or make things run even smoother. One thing I noticed is that we need to have another shelter and more tables and chairs for the August event. We were at capacity all morning and many times there were not any places for people to sit down to eat. Car parking is another area where we need to look at. We were at capacity all morning and I think we need to look at the lay out and find a way to maximize the space we have. Rob Morris, Brad Lozier and Walter Copper worked the Registration and Information booth. They did a fantastic job signing in the pilots that flew in and promoting our great Chapter. We had two new members signup and join the Chapter at the event. Way to go guys and Welcome Doug Haan and Kevin Chatterton to Chapter 67. We also had Vincennes University in attendance. They brought in two of their Cessna 172's and a couple of their instructors and students. They were very pleased with the turn out and said they had 3 people that were very interested in attending the University. I am sure some of you also heard the same thing I heard all morning, how much everyone enjoys our events and look forward to them every year. Mindy Medalen posted this on our Facebook page, It was a Fabulous Day! My Family had a great time! Thank you so much for putting on these events! 6 6 JUNE PANCAKE BREAKFAST: Friday Setup The whole gang showed up Friday evening for setup. Alan, Jeff and team laid out the A/C parking while Mike Hayden and team did the same for the kitchen. Jon and his team laid out and setup all the tents, chairs and tables. Brian flew in his beautiful PA 12. He supervised the setup program after spending the previous week organizing all the equipment and food.

7 7 JUNE PANCAKE BREAKFAST: While the pancake setup was taking place, five balloonist set up and launched into a beautiful evening at I80. By 9:00 AM the line for pancakes was huge. A/C parking was almost full. Mike said helping the moms and dads was fun but the smile on the kids faces made all the effort worthwhile. CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

10 10 SAFETY CORNER: How thoroughly do you preflight? After you preflight yourself and get the weather, do you just hop in the airplane and go? Of course not! Proper aircraft preflight is one of the most important things you do as a pilot. You ll be amazed how quickly a bird can build a nest overnight and foul your plans. Bugs or other critters may find themselves a nice cozy spot in a pitot tube or under the cowling to spend the night. Critters and airplane gremlins have a nasty way of sneaking up on us. Sure we flew yesterday and there weren t any nests but birds and mice are fast. What about the fuel system gremlins? How long has that auto gas sat in the tank? Is there any junk in the bottom of the tank? Water? Is the battery really charged up to capacity? Preflight is more than checking to see if everything is still attached.
