EAA Chapter 766 IMC Club The EAA Chapter 766 IMC Club held a safety meeting on December 4, The monthly IMC question was discussed, a IFR scenario (Oxygen or Ice) was presented with open discussion following, copying an IFR clearance was simulated and it was concluded with a IMC Review. To complete a phase of WINGS, the participant needs to complete three Knowledge credits and three Flight credits (not hours). The people that facilitated the meeting were Tony Kolar, CFII and Dave Rudd, IMC Club Coordinator. The monthly question involved a towered airport that was closed for the night. ATC cleared RWY 22 for ILS approach and was told to switch to advisory frequency. Conclusion was made to stay with announced RWY 22 unless communicated to ATC. The scenario involved a Piper Arrow PA-28R flying from Newburgh, NY to Rome, NY (120-mile trip). The sky was clear over the departure airport. The weather briefing indicated a layer of clouds between 2,000 and 4,000 feet. Planning to fly at 6,500 feet, clouds kept building and the Piper Arrow ended up at 10,500 feet keeping with VFR. Discussions followed including calling flight service for pilot s reports, call for pop-up clearance, file flight plan for IFR and return to departure airport. Tony reminded everyone the three most important things to remember: Aviate, Navigate and Communicate. He also reminded everyone that the PIC is ultimately responsible. A good rule to follow: if you need to be somewhere at a specific time, always have a back-up plan if you are flying General Aviation. Tony discussed the Copying an IFR clearance using CRAFT (Clearance limit, Route, Altitude, Frequency and Transponder). The attendee s skills were tested when copying an IFR clearance. Texting may be coming. Tony suggested viewing the websites of TRA (Temporary Reserved Airspace) which is different from TFR. The websites and will be helpful. Page 4

Others in attendance were Randy Krentz who continued prep work on the ejection seats, " Riveter Ralph" Cowin continued repair work on damaged surface patches, Kyle Hokel & Ted Katte began laying out and cutting end caps that will form the basis of the wing root fascias. Article by Al Schafer Al Schafer invites all members to participate in the work party. The next work party will be January 9, Page 5

Wright Brothers Banquet at the EAA On December 8, 2017, a group of EAA Chapter 766 members went to the EAA Museum for the Wright Brothers banquet. The banquet is held every December to honor the achievements and first powered flight of the Wright Brothers which occurred on December 17, The keynote speaker, General Joe Engle, discussed his experiences in aviation. He served in the United States Air Force and was a test pilot for the North American X-15 program, an aeronautical engineer, and is a former NASA astronaut. He also served in the Apollo program as well as the shuttle missions. Photos by Kenneth Lefeber Thanks Dave R. for the Article Page 6

Help to Bring Her Home to the AHC Each year brings more EXCITEMENT and ENTHUSIASM for young and old alike at the Aviation Heritage Center of Wisconsin (AHCW), and 2017 was no exception. In 2017, you may remember the vitality and activity taking place at the ACHW, with events, projects, workshops, youth programs and restorations all geared to inspire the imagination and enhance the aviation experience for young and old alike. In 2018, the AHCW Bring Her Home project will return one of the North Central Airline s DC-3s that was originally based in Wisconsin. The Douglas DC-3 is currently being readied for her ferry flight home to the AHCW planned for this spring. The ACHW also plans to install a new science exhibit, Science on a Sphere. This is a six-foot diameter sphere of the earth that, in a dark room, visually appears to be floating in mid-air. It will be a breath taking and effective educational tool to understand earth and space systems in a three-dimensional format. This exhibit will attract students and adults from around the Midwest. The Aviation Heritage Center of Wisconsin needs support financially to move to the next level for education and exhibits. Please consider donating financially, allowing the Bring Her Home and Science on a Sphere projects to become a reality. Excerpts from Glenn Valenstein (President) Page 7

Fly-Rite s Six Steps to the Perfect Preflight Brief On December 13, 2017, Delia Colin, had presented Six Steps to the Perfect Preflight Brief for Wings credit. The webinar covered six topics: An Overview of Potential Hazards, Adverse Conditions, Synopsis, Current Conditions, Forecasts and NOTAMs. Delia s top ten tips to the perfect preflight brief: 1) Use a checklist to ensure you check all pertinent items 2) Take the 5-10 minutes to sit down, take notes and be attentive 3) Take a defensive approach: What weather might I encounter? 4) When calling flight service, follow along on 1800wxbrief.com 5) Red flag if forecasts and currents aren t similar 6) Assume the worst will happen and ALWAYS HAVE AN OUT 7) Know your limits and stick to them 8) Log onto 1800wxbrief.com to get updates on adverse weather 9) Get a standard brief within two hours of flight, update within 30 min 10) Educate yourself on aviation weather. WEATHER KILLS: Make sure you get/conduct a full standard weather brief within 2 hours of your flight and if questionable weather, get an update within 30 minutes of flight time. Many adverse conditions are un-forecast. You must know how to analyze satellite, radar and charts if you want to stay safe. PRE BRIEF: 1) Gather all necessary information. If rusty on phonetic alphabet, use a cheat sheet. 2) Check weather on DUATS, ADDS (aviation.weather.gov), Foreflight or A) Intellicast.com Go to National Go to Mixed Animate the satellite/radar/synopsis B) 1800wxbrief.com a) Satellite. Animate. Is weather moving on or off your route? b) Check adverse conditions, radar, weather depiction to determine whether to self-brief or call flight service. Page 9

CALLING FLIGHT SERVICE FOR A BRIEFING: 800-WX-BRIEF Press 1 to speak to a Briefer After the prompt, enter the two (or three) digit state code. NOTE: Don t recommend voice recognition. Ask for briefers name or initials. Let the briefer know if you are a new or rusty pilot. Ask questions Required background information for a Standard Weather Brief My recommendation: Use phonetic alphabet and be prepared. VFR or IFR Aircraft ID (using full phonetic ID) Aircraft Type and equipment Departure Point (no need for the k ). Time of Departure (in UTC) Altitude (you want winds for). Route (Using navaids. There is no way for briefer to enter other information like highways). Destination ETE Alternate Airports (all other airports of intended landing). TYPES OF BRIEFINGS: STANDARD BRIEFING Provides all pertinent and essential information available for a proposed flight in a set format. Get this within two hours of your departure. ABBREVIATED BRIEFING Used to update information (Update Briefing) received from an earlier briefing or from other sources. If you request one or two items, only the requested items will be provided, along with an offer of adverse conditions that may be present or forecast for your proposed route of flight. Recommend an update brief within 30 minutes of your flight time. OUTLOOK BRIEFING Used for flights with proposed departure times six hours or more beyond the time of your briefing. Recommendation: Outlook Briefing the day before. Standard Briefing within two hours of flight. Abbreviated Brief/Update Brief 30 minutes before flight.
