EAA CHAPTER 10 SINCE 1955 June 2013 President s Report I hope you all weathered the recent storms in good fashion. I know that we need the rain, but it would be ok with me if we could dry out a bit my mower has seen more use in one month than it has in the past two years! Anyhow, on to airplane stuff Our annual International Learn to Fly Day event was held at our chapter hangar on May 18th. While we were hampered by the marginal weather, that didn t keep our volunteers from showing up and helping to put on a great show. We had 9 fixed wing aircraft and a helicopter positioned and ready to fly passengers, but the ceilings were so low and visibility so poor that we spent the first two hours visiting and looking at airplane stuff. We had several static aircraft on display (actually all of them were static for a while), and a couple of fellow pilots and RC modelers represented the Tulsa Glue Dobbers and Academy of Model Aeronautics by bringing some fine examples to display. All in all we had a good time, and even though we only operated for 2 hours we did manage to fly around 80 people. The list of individuals is pretty long, so I ll just say thanks to the pilots and all the volunteers from EAA 10, UL 10 and anyone else who showed up to support the effort. The following day, Sunday, May 19 was our annual Chapter Picnic. In spite of the wind, we had a really nice turn out. Does it always have to be windy and/or cold for the picnic? Even though we have a nice new porch we STILL had to cook in the NW corner of the hangar. Ha! Roma Williams led the group in prayer before we dug in thanks again Roma! There sure was a lot of food to choose from, and the deserts were great too! Thanks to all who attended! INSIDE THIS ISSUE 2 Upcoming Events / Board Report 3 Learn To Fly Day & Tulsa County Sheriff Flight Design CTLE 4 Flight Design continued/ Chapter Picnic 5 Aircraft Specialties/Avian Airpark Fly- In/OK18 Fly-In Pulsar XP/Viking Aviation 6 Officer Contacts / Membership Info 7 Recently a group of us were looking at the front porch and noticing that the step up was quite tall and that we might ought to fix it before someone trips and gets hurt. No sooner was the thought mentioned when Lynn Coltharp spoke up and said, If we can get dirt, I ll buy the sod. Jim Pogue followed with, I ll talk to Roger and see if we can use some of his dirt and that quickly we had a plan. In order to preserve and protect the efforts of these volunteers, the chapter has decided to install gutters along the front porch to keep the sod and fill dirt from washing out. The dirt and sod work is complete (looks great fellas), and the gutters should be installed before the June meeting. Be sure to tell Lynn and Jim thanks when you see them. Our B-17, Aluminum Overcast is scheduled to be in town from June Several people thought that our airplane was in town this past weekend, but that was another group s pile of nuts and bolts that shall remain nameless. EAA and Tulsa s own B-17G, Aluminum Overcast will be positioned at Riverside Jet Center (formerly Roadhouse Aviation) the last weekend of June. Shortly after the time you receive this letter we will be launching a vigorous advertising campaign in order to let the public and the aviation community know that we will be offering tours and rides. For those with , keep an eye on your inbox for a full color and printable flyer that I will be sending print a few and help us get the word out! Also, if you have volunteered to work this event, you will be receiving volunteer roster via . If you would like to volunteer, please contact me directly at hangar10@cox.net. Young Eagles just wrapped up earlier today so I wanted to get a quick report in here before we go to print. The weather was nice and we had 6 volunteer pilots on hand who flew 48 new Young Eagles. Everyone appeared to have a good time as the volunteers did a great job showing off our sport. A big thanks to Tom and Elaine Egbert and all of our volunteers! Mark your calendars and plan to join us at this month s meeting as we welcome Mr. Red Stevenson. A well known Bixby entrepreneur, Red will be sharing some interesting stories that you are sure to enjoy. Haven t heard Red speak? You are in for a treat! See you Monday night, June 17! Mark Chouinard

Board Report by Jim and Edna Pogue One of our members, Stan Crozley, has donated a very nice desk for the EAA Chapter 10 Hangar. We did not know what to do with the old desk and Bhrent & Janet Waddell took it. Mari and Roger Wieden donated the dirt for the west side of the hangar at the porch area and Lynn Coltharp donated the sod to fix this area as it was getting to be a fairly good sized drop off and afraid that someone was going to get hurt. Mark Chouinard is having an estimate made for a gutter and two downspouts for the roof in this area as the water comes off and washes everything out. It was discussed that we need to get a Breakfast Committee together for the monthly EAA Chapter 10 Breakfast. Please be thinking about this so that it can be discussed at the next meeting. We have a new member, Lee Odom, that has set up a Facebook page for EAA Chapter 10. He is also working on a Facebook page and the website for the Tulsa Fly In. He has put in a lot of work on this project and deserves a great big Thank You. It was brought up again about a Member Directory with pictures. There was several suggestions but it all requires a lot of work to upkeep. If anyone has any ideas, please let us know at the next meeting. Who Brings Snacks? 3 Page 3 EAA CHAPTER 10 LEARN TO FLY DAY 2013 by Mark Chouinard With low ceilings and limited visibility, Learn to Fly Day got off to a slow start, but with several aircraft on display and free hotdogs and cold drinks, we were able to keep everyone s interest as we visited with people and helped to educate them about our sport and our organization. On display was a GN-1 Air Camper, a Siemens Schuckert, Fokker D.V111, two light sport CTLS, a Fairchild 24, a Breezy, a couple of Rans Coyotes and several Cessnas, Pipers, a Grumman Tiger, and a R-44 helicopter. Of the 16 aircraft on hand, nine fixed wing and the R-44 were offering rides. The weather did not allow us to start flying until noon; once we did, we stayed pretty busy for two hours straight and managed to fly 80 passengers. In addition to full scale, we also enlisted the help of several members of our local RC Club (Tulsa Gluedobbers), who promoted their club and the Academy of Model Aeronautics. They brought several examples from lightweight foam flyers to a quadcopter and even a couple of giant scale models. We also set up RealFlight 6.5 on a large flat screen so that everyone could safely try flying model aircraft. These guys were a bit hit, especially with the youngsters we were glad to have them. A great time was had by all, and we wish to thank our excellent volunteers who made this an efficient operation while promoting the spirit of aviation. Flight Line: Jack Nelson, Jack Woodward, Jim Pogue, John Kurt, Mike Long, Lee Odom. Aircraft Displays: Roger Wieden, Tom and Tommy Gutmann, Mark Hymer, Charles Stephenson, Jim Gallaway. Indoor Displays: Jim Ewers (RC), Jim s Friend Tom (RC), Mike Aichele (Homebuilding), Viking Aviation (Flight Training). Registration: Elaine Egbert, Sandy Perry, Sharon Lairmore, Edna Pogue. Kitchen: Jim Gallaway, Billy Ellis, Janet Waddell, Theresa Chouinard, Tyler Chouinard. Pilots: Bhrent Waddell (C-177), Chris Johnson (Piper Warrior), Ken Mason and Roger Wieden (Breezy), Bob Merrell (C-172), Steve Quick (Fairchild 24), Michael Cox (C-140), Paul Shireman (Rans S-6 Coyote), Lynn Coltharp (Rans S-6 Coyote), Tom Egbert (C-172) and Matthew Merrell (Robinson R-44). TULSA COUNTY SHERIFF FLIGHT DESIGN CTLE Roger Crow, Echo Flight Resources, LLC Below is a little background on how the Flight Design, CTLS evolved into the CTLE and flying for the Tulsa County Sheriff s Office. Back ground: I have been a Reserve Deputy of the Tulsa County (OK) Sheriff s Office since 1982 and ten of those years have been in airborne law enforcement (ALE). As I was ending my 35 year career with the Oklahoma (Tulsa) Air National Guard, I began an 11 month research on high-wing, light sport airplanes for the purpose of using them in airborne law enforcement, with a strong focus on US made aircraft for this mission. However, my R&D studies found that Flight Design was the only LSA that could meet the required high standards I set for this project. Although Flight Design is a German aircraft company, 60% of the CTLE s components are made by companies in the USA. In April 2010, I was introduced to Tom Gutmann and his son Tom Jr. of Tulsa s Air Time Aviation. We worked together to research the feasibility of using the CTLS for airborne law enforcement operations. In January 2011 I was invited by Flight Design to team up with their engineers in Germany to design and development the CTLE. I purchased the first operational CTLE and in July 2011, I was asked to be a dealer for Flight Design with a focus on airborne law enforcement. When my CTLE is not on tour or on demo flight, I m flying it for the Tulsa County Sheriff s Office on regional call-outs for patrols, agriculture theft, drug interdiction, fire prevention, FEMA operations, search & rescue/recovery (SAR) and supporting fish & Wildlife Game Wardens. CTLE Uniqueness: The CTLE is the only high-wing, LSA that is wider than a Cessna 182 and flies 120kts. It can comfortably carry two large crew members over 6-foot tall plus duty gear, have a max

Page 4 take-off weight of 1500 lbs when flown in Public use and has built-in safety features that are standard on all CTLE [s that other LSA don t have. It can carry 34 gallons of fuel which can give it a loiter time of 6 to 8 flight hours while burning 91 Octane automobile gas. Most of my 1.5 hour law enforcement patrols use between 3 to 4 gallons of fuel. A 45 minute LE flight uses 2.4 to 2.8 gallons. The Tulsa County Sheriff s air support operations is designed to cover Tulsa s seven neighboring counties. We refer to this air support concept as regional aviation enforcement, or RAVEN for short. The Tulsa County CTLE is named the Talking Bird and has the call sign of RAVEN-1 with Tulsa and Riverside ATC. Law Enforcement Components: The CTLE is capable of carrying the complete line of Cloud Cap Technology TASE (EO/IR) camera systems. Therefore, the CTLE has a range of cameras sizes that can be installed to meet an agencies budget and mission. These cameras all have recording capabilities and moving map systems. In April of This year we completed the beta testing of down link system that will allow the CTLE to stream real-time images coast-to-coast or around the block to an Emergency Operation Center, an on-scene/incident commander s laptop or a patrol officer s mobile computer. In time of disasters an airborne repeater can be integrated with the CTLE. The CTLE does come with a center-line hard point for mounting a search light. Tulare County (CA) Sheriff s Department has such a search light in operation. Product Support: Flight Design is the third largest propeller airplane manufacturer in the world behind Cessna and Cirus. It has been in full time operation since the 1980 s. The CTLE prices are inclusive for a turn-key delivery. The CTLE is considered an emergency vehicle; it and it s payload must be fully mission capable at all time. For this to happen, product support and repair facilities are vital to any law enforcement operations. When discrepancies occur or scheduled maintenance is required, Flight Design has a complete heavy maintenance and repair facility in Tulsa with excellent product support for the aircraft, as well as the on-board equipment. EAA CHAPTER 10 PICNIC The EAA Chapter 10 Picnic was held on Sunday June 19 th, the day after Learn to Fly Day. We all wish to thank Mark, Theresa, and Tyler Chouinard for cooking the hamburgers and hot dogs. We enjoyed a great array of salads, slaws, baked beans, deviled eggs and more that was supplied by the guests that attended the picnic. We also had a great variety of deserts which included E J White s famous Texas Sheet Cake. A good time was had by all with much catching up from over the winter with other members and friends.

Page 5 AIRCRAFT SPECIALTIES by Randy Harris Aircraft Specialties Services has recently invested heavily in creating an all-new world class website dedicated to aircraft engine related parts and annual parts. The web address is: This website has been underutilized because traditionally customers have preferred to talk with a sales specialist to ensure they receive correct parts and are informed if alternative parts are available. The aviation world is changing along with the expectations of customers who feel comfortable making their own purchasing decisions provided there is enough information available on line. The company has worked diligently to load the website with high-resolution pictures, informed descriptions and related PMA equivalents to OEM parts. If there is service information about a part such as an applicable service bulletin, or it it s involved in an AD, we try to put the information a customer needs right in the description. AVIAN AIRPARK FLY IN by Don Herbel The Avian Airpark annual spring fly-in breakfast was held on Saturday May 11, Folks enjoyed fantastic weather with clear skies and light winds which brought in a good crowd by both land and air. Twenty three airplanes flew in and more guests arrived by car to consume a breakfast of pancakes, sausage, coffee and orange juice while a local band entertained. Don and Rita Herbel hosted the event at their hangar, representing the Avian Homeowners Association. OK18 FLY-IN AT GASTON s by Paul Shireman Mike and Patty Sizemore hosted their annual OK18 fly-in at Gaston s on May 24 and 25. For those who might not know, OK18 is the designator for their Grand Isle Airstrip, at their home, on Lake Hudson. Gaston s is a fishing resort located on the White River just below Bull Shoals dam with a 3900 foot grass strip (3MO). The fly-in originally started out for Super Cub s and tail draggers and was held at OK18. Over time it evolved to include all types of aircraft. Due to liability concerns they moved the fly-in to Gaston s in Gaston s did not allow tent camping on their airstrip so I did not participate in Gaston s could not accommodate all of those who did want cabins which is probably the reason they agreed to allow aircraft tent campers for this year s event. Eighty one (unofficial count) aircraft attended. Several states were represented, the furthest being Wisconsin and Utah. I flew over Friday morning and arrived in time to watch most of the arrivals, one of which was Jim Gallaway who also camped out. Other Chapter 10 members attending were Mike Long, Ed and Jackie Fogle, and Ken and Coralee Duncan. Friday evening we went on a lake cruise provided by the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism. The state provides the boats but volunteers operate them. Our captain/guide was real good and made the cruise both enjoyable and informational. I wore a jacket and still was a little cold on the trip but Gallaway, with only sorts and a shirt suffered somewhat. One of the purposes of the fly-in is to raise funds for The Wounded Warriors Project. On Saturday we participated in the Wounded Warrior Poker Run. The first stop was Valley Airport (61AR) where we were provided with a great breakfast. Next was Marion County (KFLP) at Flippen. Then Turkey Mountain Airpark (MO00) where lunch was provided and some of the planes participated in Flour Bombing and Short Field contests. Next was Carrol County (4M1) at Berryville. Then Thunder Ridge Ranch (45AR) where non professional friends were playing Ozark fold music on mountain dulcimers and providing cold drinks and homemade cookies. Finally back to Gaston s for Flour bombing, Short field contest and an airplane drag race exhibition. Each of the stops on the poker run was also raising donations for the Wounded Warriors Project. At this time the funds donated ar $9, plus Valley and Turnkey Mountain donations which are still outstanding. One hundred 3ighty (180) people attended the Saturday evening dinner which was topped off with recognition of key volunteers, poker run and contest winners, and then an auction of some real nice donated items. Good flying weather, people, food and facilities made it a real nice weekend.

Page 6 The Pulsar XP by David Glaves As a light-sport pilot, I was looking for the best aircraft performance with economy. I found an excellent choice for my needs, a Pulsar XP. My aircraft was built in 1995 by a physician in California. I located the aircraft in Georgia and called a ferry pilot friend in Florida. Having never flown a Pulsar, I was curious about the size and fit. My friend is my size (6ft. & 190lbs)with a lot of time in a variety of aircraft. I asked if he had any time in a Pulsar. He said Sure, I flew one from California to Georgia, it was great. To which I replied Well that s the one. Go to Georgia and bring it to me in Airman Acres. The Pulsar XP is all composite fiberglass construction with a Rotax 912ULS (100 hp), 600 lbs empty and a 38 inch cabin width. The most office asked question is How fast is it. Performance is 138 mph true airspeed cruise on 4.8 gph, a maximum climb rate of 1500 ft/min. Flight characteristics are quick but not twichy. With 20 gal. of premium auto-gas, the Pulsar has more range than I have. There are currently 79 registered Pulsar XP s in the U.S. and I have the only one flying in Oklahoma. The Pulsar has met all of my performance and economy requirements and is an absolute BLAST to fly. Box 1985 Visit us online at our New Web Address Next Meeting: June 17, :30 pm SKYBOLT 236R by Jim Pogue Knowledge; and all my friends and neighbors for their continued encouragement. A very special thanks goes out to my wife Edna for her being my assistant in every phase of the conversion, for all the times the pieces were fit and refit, and her devotion to seeing this project through with me. Without having her as my extra set of hands, the task would have been much harder. The gear tracks true and is very forgiving. I am very happy with the way the landing gear performs & after 20 years of having the airplane I am amazed as to how much nicer the plane handles on the ground. I just love the way it feels during take off and landing. Thanks again to all. After over three years having not flown & with the last 6 months of steady fabricating of all the parts and molding pieces for the landing gear conversion, Skybolt 236R is flying again. Thanks goes out to Randy Harris who first convinced me to convert to the Grove spring aluminum landing gear, the loan of his molds for the fuselage farings and his wealth of knowledge on how to do the conversion. Special thanks to John and Sharon Lairmore for their help and support; Stan Crozley for his encouragement; Bryan Fisher for supplying me with some badly needed paint; Dan Kloker for giving me the aluminum for the wheel pant brackets; and my brother David for his ae ona tical
