1 EAA CHAPTER 10 SINCE 1955 March 2012 President s Report Our March program will be Mike Aichele sharing his trip to a couple well known Aviation Museums. Mike has a wealth of pictures and facts from a number of such trips. It looks like we have missed the winter wrath of Mother Nature this year. We will undoubtedly pay with an extra volume of bugs in the coming months, but that's a small price to pay. Our first meeting of the Tulsa Fly-In is next week. There will be some changes to it but we're still in the planning stages. Information will be shared as the planning progresses. We have a tentative date of May for a visit from the Zenith people. We have an 801 recently flying which we hope to get a look at soon, and another project getting close. Speaking of mowing, I appreciate all of you who offered to help mow around the clubhouse this year. I ll send out an reminder to each of you when your 2-week shift begins. To answer the most common question No, Brit (Gundy s maintenance guy) does not mow around our hangar. Out in the taxiway and parking area? Yes, most of the time, but not up close or around the back side. I normally spray for weeds around the perimeter, so dragging out a weed eater should not be necessary. We ll also want to touch things up a bit prior to events, so I ll be in touch during those times. We are in the process of planning some workshops for So far we have one scheduled for March 24 th (see page 3), but we hope to schedule several more throughout the year. Topics that some have voiced interest in are sheet metal, stitching and fabric, electrical systems and wiring, composites, etc. Your input and feedback would be appreciated so that we can make the most of these events. 3 Chapter Workshops We Need Your Input and Participation! Page 3 We are still in the planning phase for some of the workshops, but based upon the feedback we ve received thus far I think it s safe to say that we should be able to make them happen. The first in the series will be Oxy/Acetylene Welding, which we have scheduled for Saturday, March 24 th. We plan to start at 10:00am (after our pancake breakfast) and would like to wrap things up around 3pm. Our primary instructor will be Jerry Vaughn, who will speak to us about the components of an Oxy/Acetylene welding rig, general safety, how to adjust a flame, and most importantly he will show us proper welding techniques. Chuck Stephenson has also volunteered to demonstrate how to fishmouth 4130 tubing and assemble tubing clusters. As we continue to work on the details this information is subject to change, but in general, anyone interested in learning more about Oxy/Acetylene welding should expect to pick up some useful pointers. Based on the level of interest and the materials we plan to provide, we have set the cost at $15 per person for the welding workshop. You membership with chapter 10 needs to be in good standing in order to sign up and attend. In order to plan accordingly and make sure that we have enough materials and food on hand, we would like to have everyone registered no later than March 19 th, so come join us at the chapter meeting and get signed up! 4 Page 4 Corvair College #22 Georgetown, Texas By Mark Chouinard I intended to have these pages filled before I left on my trip this week, but I just didn t have anything worth publishing and I hate to regurgitate articles from other publications or web sites if I don t have to. As I sit here on Wednesday night, preparing for my trip tomorrow morning and contemplating what to write, I figured that I would just go ahead and write about my trip as it happens. So, you might be asking what is a Corvair College? For those that are familiar with the Corvair engine movement where experimental aircraft are concerned, there is one individual that has made the conversion process his life s work. William Wynne of FlyCorvair (Orange Park, FL) is THE Corvair guru where aircraft conversions are concerned. William has devoted the last 15 years to the study of this engine and offers an excellent line of accessories to make this reliable engine more robust. What kind of builders use the Corvair engine? Not just Pietenpols, but the Zenith 601, 650 and 750, KR2, Sonex and many others. William and his team travel the country to put on these colleges for the benefit of hundreds of builders each year Mark Petniunas of Falcon Machine (Fitchburg, WI) and Roy Szarafinski of Roy s Garage (Osseo, MI) team up with William and his crew to ensure that the builders get the most from these sessions. Many say that they learn more in one weekend than in months of studying manuals. Our hosts for this event are Pietenpol builders and Army National Guard members Kevin Purtee and Shelly Tumino of Austin, Texas. These two individuals shelled out a lot of time and money to secure the site, construct workbenches, provide meals, arrange for group discounts on lodging and essentially make everything flow smoothly. I m proud to call these folks my friends they don t come any better. The drive down to Georgetown was uneventful except for the fact that I was harassed by the cold front all the way down. One minute I m in 70+ degree temps with the air on, the next I m in 40 degree temps with rain and fogged up windows. I must have made that transition at least a dozen times during the 6 hour drive. Once in Georgetown, I jumped in with Kevin and fellow builder Larry Magruder for the ride into Austin, where Kevin and Shelly had an excellent steak and shrimp dinner prepared for a few friends. CC#22 Day 1 (Friday) The rain and cold have arrived! After many months of little or no rain, Austin is suddenly surrounded by continuous rain and occasional thunderstorms. In addition, the high temp for the day would be in the mid-40s the coldest temps they have had all winter in central Texas. This did not impede our progress though 33 of the 40 who were registered showed up on day 1. Of those that made it, 13 brought engines to work on while others brought parts for inspection or show and tell. Some engines were brought in exactly as they were removed from the vehicle looking rough and dirty. Others had fully reworked components and were prepared to perform a complete assembly and test run. 5 Page 5 CC#22 Day 2 (Saturday) More rain, more cold temps and more engine building. A couple of projects are really coming along today. There are a variety of engines on hand from the standard 2700CC (100HP) to the 2850CC (110HP) and the beastly 120HP 3000CC engine. With several builders on hand who have completed projects, it has been a very informative event, especially for those of us who are still in the process of planning or building our project. Being able to see firsthand how some of the pieces are assembled or how to properly install components is a huge benefit of attending a college. Some of those in attendance are on their fourth or fifth college even though they have completed engines they continue to return for the camaraderie, the sharing of knowledge and the learning. Their experience is much appreciated, especially with those who are making efforts to complete their engines this weekend. 2700CC model after its successful test run. Kevin Purtee and group looking over a test engine. CC#22 Day 3 (Sunday) Wrapping it up! The sun finally decided to come out and dry things up a bit. Those that were finishing up work on their engines were able to do so without a heavy coat and with sunlight beaming in the hangar doors. Once things started to warm up a bit the activity on this airport really picked up. Along with an active flight school, Georgetown has a couple of warbirds stationed here (a B-25 (Devil Dog) and a P-51). Back to the engines there was another completed engine that ran on the test stand on the final day, but I was not there to get photos of video. With that successful run, that makes three completed and running engines at the year s first Corvair College. There are a lot of technical details that I ve left out of this writing due to the constraints of time and space, but speaking generally there were a lot of serious builders here that were all focused on learning more about their chosen engine. Call Mark or rmfridley@cox.net Signatures Needed on No-User-Fee Letter in Senate EAA members should urge lawmakers to sign EAA.org March 1, 2012 The leadership of the Senate General Aviation Caucus is asking fellow senators for their support and signature on a letter to President Obama urging the White House to remove GA user fees from its Fiscal Year 2013 budget proposal. Sen. Mark Begich (D-AK) and Sen. Mike Johanns (R-NE), the co-chairs of the Senate GA Caucus, are circulating the letter. It is similar to a letter by the House GA Caucus that has already collected more than 180 co-signers as of Wednesday evening far more than the 119 signatures when a similar letter was circulated in the House last year. The Obama administration has proposed a $100-per-flight user fee on certain GA flights within controlled airspace. GA groups remain opposed to the measure, which ironically was introduced the same week as a new FAA Reauthorization Bill without user fees was signed by the president. "We are concerned a new user fee like the one described in the administration's budget proposal may create a disincentive for pilots and aircraft to use air traffic control services or fly in controlled airspace," the letter reads. "By discouraging ATC use, this proposal may inadvertently create a less safe aviation environment." EAA members can help in this effort by contacting their U.S. senators and urging them to sign the letter by the Wednesday, March 7, deadline. Senators who wish to sign the letter can contact Sen. Begich or Sen. Johanns to add their names to the anti-user fee effort.
