VIEW Vermeer s Girl with a Pearl Earring and other masterpieces at the Mauritshuis Royal Picture Gallery on a day trip to The Hague. EXPLORE the city s many canals during a private cruise on an antique salon boat to understand the importance of the canal system to commerce during Amsterdam s Golden Age.

MARCY SWAIN, DUTCH WATERWAYS, 2017 Faculty Leader BERT PATENAUDE, MA 79, PHD 87, is a lecturer in history and international relations at Stanford University. Bert s wideranging Stanford credentials include assisting Sanford alumnus and former Sunset magazine publisher L. W. Bill Lane, Jr., complete his memoir, The Sun Never Sets: Reflections on a Western Life (Stanford University Press, 2013). Bert s previous book, Trotsky: Downfall of a Revolutionary (Harper Collins, 2009), was serialized for radio by the BBC. His first book, The Big Show in Bololand: The American Relief Expedition to Soviet Russia in the Famine of 1921 (Stanford University Press, 2002), won the 2003 Marshall Shulman Book Prize and was made into a documentary film and broadcast in 2011 as part of the award-winning PBS history series, American Experience. Bert, who has traveled extensively with Stanford, including several trips to the Netherlands, looks forward to an indepth exploration of Amsterdam, one of his absolute favorite cities. Some of the topics he will discuss with us during this program include Dutch Golden Age painters, The Hague and the rise of the international legal order, the early-20th-century Dutch political cartoonist Louis Raemaekers and the Dutch reaction to the crisis of the European Union. 4 THE NETHERLANDS Haarlem Amsterdam The Hague AMSTERDAM Royal Palace De Wallen Grand Hotel Am Rembrandt House Museum Dutch National Opera and Ballet Museum Van Loon Jewish Quarter Rijksmuseum Under the Microscope Stanford Travel/Study s special Focus programs are designed to provide in-depth insights into a particular city, including staying in one centrally located hotel for a week-long stay, visiting off-the-beaten-track sites, meeting with locals, enjoying presentations by guest speakers and attending exclusive special events, while allowing plenty of time for individual pursuits. Most days feature a lecture, and each day s excursion, which is often on foot, involves exploring a theme that is central to the city s identity. Lunch is often eaten together as a group, and most afternoons are free for independent explorations. There is typically one full-day excursion by motor coach to a site located outside the city, otherwise we use a motor coach only when it s impractical to walk or take public transportation. We provide a transit pass or tickets as well as a pass that provides complimentary access to many museums and attractions in order to facilitate independent navigation and exploration. Although dinners are mostly on our own, we generally attend at least one evening performance of opera, music, dance or theater as a group. Itinerary SUNDAY & MONDAY, OCTOBER 13 & 14 WELKOM IN AMSTERDAM Depart the U.S. on overnight flights to Amsterdam. Upon arrival on Monday, transfer independently to our hotel, located in the historic heart of the city in the former Scheepvaarthuis ( Shipping House ). The richly decorated building is the first true example of the Amsterdam School (expressionist architecture) and was originally the headquarters of the city s shipping companies in the early 1900s. Gather for an orientation briefing followed by a tour of Amsterdam s canals by antique salon boat and a festive welcome reception and dinner in our hotel s historic Council Chamber, where shipping barons once held important meetings. GRAND HOTEL AMRÂTH (10/14: D) TUESDAY, OCTOBER 15 MUSIC AND MEMORY This morning learn about the Dutch National Opera and Ballet as we visit the Stopera for an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of this modern performing arts theater. We ll hear about the building s controversial construction before touring its rehearsal studios and costume workshop. After lunch together in the Jodenburrt, or Jewish Quarter, perhaps join an optional walking tour, with stops at the Portuguese Synagogue and the February Protest Monument and Hollandse Schouwburg two memorials to the thousands of Jews who were persecuted and deported during World War II. Enjoy the remainder of the afternoon at leisure to begin exploring Amsterdam independently. Return to the Stopera this evening for a live performance. GRAND HOTEL AMRÂTH (B,L) WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16 DUTCH MASTERS IN THE HAGUE Spend today exploring The Hague, seat of the Dutch Government and home to the International Court of Justice. Visit the Panorama Mesdag, the world s oldest 19th-century panoramic painting still in its original location, then explore the

5 râth HAARLEM private Museum Bredius, an 18th-century mansion whose collection features paintings and etchings by Rembrandt, Jan Steen and Anthony van Dyck. After a walking tour of The Hague s most important public buildings, conclude our exploration of the city with a visit to the Mauritshuis Royal Picture Gallery to see some of the most iconic Golden Age Dutch masterpieces including Vermeer s Girl with a Pearl Earring. Return to Amsterdam for dinner on our own. GRAND HOTEL AMRÂTH (B,L) THURSDAY, OCTOBER 17 AMSTERDAM S COUNTERCULTURE Visit a local coffeeshop, where the sale of marijuana is legal. Meet with the coffeeshop s owner for a conversation about the Dutch tolerance of soft drugs. Following lunch on our own, regroup for a visit to the Prostitution Information Center (PIC), where Amsterdam activists work to ensure sex workers right to protection under the law. Discuss the implications of legalizing sex work with a leading activist before taking a walking tour of De Wallen (Amsterdam s red-light district), that dates back to the 13th century. The rest of the afternoon and evening are free for independent exploration and dining. GRAND HOTEL AMRÂTH (B) FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18 THE GOLDEN AGE IN HAARLEM Today enjoy a half-day tour to the city of Haarlem. Embark on a walking tour of the city s main sights, including its Grote Markt and the 16th-century Saint Bavo s Cathedral, whose ornate organ was played by both Handel and Mozart. Visit the Frans Hals Museum to learn about Haarlem s own Golden Age. Enjoy lunch in Haarlem before returning to Amsterdam for an afternoon and evening at leisure. GRAND HOTEL AMRÂTH (B,L) SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19 REMBRANDT AND REYPENAER Begin the day with a specially arranged before-hours entrance to the Rembrandt House Museum, where Rembrandt van Rijn lived and worked. Following lunch on our own and time to further explore the Old Centre independently, enjoy a specially arranged visit to the Wijngaard family s Reypenaer Tasting Room for a wine pairing and tasting of Dutch cheese, including Reypenaer, the family s semi-hard artisan Gouda that s aged in a 100-year-old warehouse. GRAND HOTEL AMRÂTH (B) SUNDAY, OCTOBER 20 ROYALTY AND THE RIJKSMUSEUM Begin our last day in Amsterdam with a visit to the Royal Palace, official reception hall of King Willem-Alexander. Continue to Museum Square for a special visit to the Cuypers Library and the Atelier Building, the Rijksmuseum s centers for restoration, preservation, scientific practice and research. Meet with a conservationist to learn more about efforts to preserve Dutch cultural heritage, after which we may remain at the Rijksmuseum to explore independently the world s largest collection of works by the Dutch Old Masters. Late this afternoon, regroup for a private visit to the Museum Van Loon, a canal residence built in Celebrate the culmination of our Amsterdam adventure with a festive farewell reception and dinner in one of the home s historic dining rooms. WHAT TO EXPECT We consider this program to be a moderately active one that is at times physically demanding. All participants must be physically fit, active and in good health. Although we use a motor coach for our day trips outside Amsterdam, all our daily excursions will be via public transportation and on foot and will involve walking from two to four miles, sometimes over slippery, cobblestoned streets. Participants must be able to stand outside with limited shelter and no available seating for up to three hours, rain or shine. Significant walking and climbing of stairs, sometimes without handrails, will also be required at historic buildings, museums and palaces. Mornings are busy, usually beginning with a lecture followed by an extensive walking tour. Most afternoons are free for individual pursuits; to facilitate exploration we will provide each traveler with tickets that allow access to Amsterdam s comprehensive public transportation network, as well as information about, directions to and discounts for some of Amsterdam s most commonly visited sites. Most dinners are independent. We welcome travelers 15 years of age and older on this program.

As a condition of participation, all confirmed participants are required to sign a Release of Liability. Cancellations & Refunds Deposits and any payments are refundable, less a $500-per-person cancellation fee, until 120 days prior to departure. After that date, refunds can be made only if the program is sold out and your place(s) can be resold, in which case a $1,000-per-person cancellation fee will apply. Insurance Stanford Travel/Study provides all travelers who are U.S. or Canadian citizens with minimal medical, accident and evacuation coverage under our group-travel insurance policy. Our group policy is intended to provide minimal levels of protection while you are traveling on this program. You may choose to subscribe to optional tripcancellation and baggage insurance. Information offering such insurance will be provided to travelers with their welcome materials. The product offered includes special benefits if you purchase your policy within 14 days of written confirmation of your participation on the trip. Eligibility We encourage membership in the Stanford Alumni Association as the program cost for nonmembers is $300 more than the members price. A person traveling as a guest paid for by a current member will not be charged the nonmember fee.
