3 ROYAL PALACE, BANGKOK, THAILAND Faculty Leader Greg Watkins, 85, PhD 02, is the associate director of Stanford s Structured Liberal Education (SLE) program, a freshman humanities program where students study the history of philosophy, literature and religion. His research is focused on religion and film. For the past 14 years he s been a resident fellow at East Florence Moore Hall, living with the students who participate in the program. He loves the curiosity and inquisitiveness of students of all ages. He s led trips for Stanford throughout Southeast Asia, South Asia and the Himalayan region and has traveled with his two daughters to Thailand and Bhutan. He notes, Our trip through Southeast Asia will be full of images of the Buddha, which will lead us to ask, Who was the Buddha and why is he so important to the people we ll meet?. I just love traveling with kids. I learned from traveling with my daughters in this part of the world that kids ask the best questions! 4 BURMA CHINA LAOS V IETNAM Hanoi Ha Long Bay I n d i a n O c e a n T HAILAND Bangkok ANGKOR WAT NATIONAL PARK Siem Reap CAMBODIA Itinerary DECEMBER 19 & 20 Travel to Vietnam DECEMBER 21 & 22 Hanoi, Vietnam Peruse the narrow lanes of Hanoi s Guild District, each historically devoted to the practice of a single handicraft. At sprawling Ethnology Museum, delve into the lifestyles and traditions of Vietnam s 53 minority peoples. Visit Ba Dinh Square, where Ho Chi Minh declared Vietnam s independence from France in 1945, and tour Uncle Ho s mausoleum and former private residence. Check out a pho noodle soup shop and watch a traditional water puppet show. DECEMBER 23 & 24 Ha Long Bay, Vietnam Embark on a two-night adventure at Ha Long Bay, where we explore the karst (limestone) landscape. Take a dip in the water and climb to a lookout point for a birds-eye view of the bay. Go exploring at Sung Sot (or Surprise Cave), the largest cave in Ha Long Bay and a subterranean grotto filled with thousands of stalagmites and stalactites. DECEMBER 25 TO 27 Siem Reap, Cambodia Explore the ruined capital of the powerful Khmer kingdom. Our first stop is Angkor Wat, an elaborate three-dimensional model of the Hindu-Buddhist world. Evoke Indiana Jones as we explore the ruins of the partially overgrown temples of Preah Khan and Ta Prohm, both built by the god-king, Jayavarman VII, in the 12th century. Other temple highlights at Angkor Wat include Banteay Srei and Bayon with its stunning reliefs and 54 intricate, symmetrical towers embellished with giant stone faces. DECEMBER 28 Bangkok, Thailand Spend a memorable afternoon at the spectacular Royal Palace complex and wrap up our adventure with a cruise along the Chao Phraya River to witness scenes of daily life here. What to Expect We consider this program to be a moderately strenuous program that is at times physically demanding and busy. Some days require early-morning starts; we often have a full schedule of excursions, lectures and special events. Limited internal flight schedules may necessitate early morning or late evening travel. Daily excursions involve one to three miles of walking with tours as long as three hours on city streets, which are, in some cases, uneven or cobblestoned. Due to poor repair and some unpaved rural roads, travel may be slow at times. Medical treatment and care are not always available or up to U.S. standards. Luggage will need to be handled by individual travelers at airport customs points where porters are not permitted. Average temperatures in Vietnam and Cambodia in late December range from the low 60s ( F) to the low 80s. It is often humid in Southeast Asia, especially in Cambodia, but cooler in northern Vietnam (sometimes surprisingly so), especially early in the morning. Although all of the hotels and motor coaches used in this program are air-conditioned, other traditional means of conveyance and most of the museums, temples, pagodas and ruins we visit are not air-conditioned. Participants must be physically fit, active and in good health. We welcome travelers 8 years of age and older on this program. Terms & Conditions Deposits, Payments, Cancellations & Refunds A $1,000 per-person deposit is required to hold your space. Child rates apply to children ages 18 and younger on the date the adventure begins. Deposits and any payments are refundable, less a $500-per-person cancellation fee, until 120 days prior to departure. After that date, refunds can be made only if the program is sold out and your place(s) can be resold, in which case a $1,000-per-person cancellation fee will apply. As a condition of participation, all confirmed participants are required to sign a Release of Liability. Insurance Stanford Travel/Study provides all travelers who are U.S. or Canadian citizens with minimal medical, accident and evacuation coverage under our group-travel insurance policy. Our group policy is intended to provide minimal levels of protection while you are traveling on this program. You may choose to subscribe to optional trip-cancellation and baggage insurance. Information offering such insurance will be provided to travelers with their welcome materials. The product offered includes special benefits if you purchase your policy within 14 days of written confirmation of your participation on the trip. Eligibility We encourage membership in the Stanford Alumni Association as the program cost for nonmembers is $300 more than the members price. A person traveling as a paid guest of a current member will not be charged the nonmember fee. However, we can assume no liability for injury, damage, loss, accident, delay or irregularity in connection with the service of any automobile, motor coach, launch or any other conveyance used in carrying out this program or for the acts or defaults of any company or person engaged in conveying the passenger or in carrying out the arrangements of the program. We cannot accept any responsibility for losses or additional expenses due to delay or changes in air or other services, sickness, weather, strike, war, quarantine, force majeure or other causes beyond our control. All such losses or expenses will have to be borne by the passenger as tour rates provide arrangements only for the time stated. We reserve the right to make such alterations to this published itinerary as may be deemed necessary. The right is reserved to cancel any program prior to departure in which case the entire payment will be refunded without further obligation on our part. The right is also reserved to decline to accept or retain any person as a member of the program. No refund will be made for an unused portion of any tour unless arrangements are made in sufficient time to avoid penalties. Baggage is carried at the owner s risk entirely. It is understood that the ship s ticket, when issued, shall constitute the sole contract between the passenger and the cruise company. The airlines concerned are not to be held responsible for any act, omission or event during the time passengers are not on board their plane or conveyance. Neither the Stanford Alumni Association, Stanford University nor our operators accept liability for any carrier s cancellation penalty incurred by the purchase of a nonrefundable ticket in connection with the tour.
