KRASNER is the Graham H. Stuart Professor of International Relations and a senior fellow at Stanford University s Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and the Hoover Institution. Professor Krasner s research and writings have dealt primarily with the political determinants of international economic relations, American foreign policy, sovereignty and state building. During our program, he will talk about the challenges of achieving democracy in Turkey and the challenges the Ottoman Empire faced in its dealing with Europe over many centuries. 4 Istanbul Izmir Sardis Ephesus T URKEY CAPPAD O Bodrum Dalaman Gocek Itinerary MONDAY & TUESDAY, JUNE 17 & 18 U.S. / ISTANBUL, TURKEY Depart the U.S. on overnight flights to Istanbul. Arrive on Tuesday afternoon and transfer to our hotel, where we gather for a welcome reception. PERA PALACE (6/18: D) WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19 ISTANBUL Begin our exploration of Turkey on a tour of Istanbul featuring its highlights: the Underground Cistern; the Hippodrome; the Blue Mosque, named for its glorious 17th-century painted tiles; and Aya Sofya with its impressive domed basilica and Byzantine mosaics. Following lunch, stop at the small yet lavishly decorated St. Savior in Chora Church to view its many frescoes, which tell the story of the beginning of Christianity. PERA PALACE (B,L) THURSDAY, JUNE 20 ISTANBUL Spend this morning at Topkapi Palace, former fortress and pleasure dome of the Ottoman sultans. Highlights include the palace s treasury, wardrobe, kitchens and decorated apartments of the harem. Continue to the Grand Bazaar and enjoy some free time to wander this labyrinth of shops and cafes. PERA PALACE (B) FRIDAY, JUNE 21 ISTANBUL / IZMIR / SARDIS This morning fly to the thirdlargest city in Turkey, Izmir. Upon arrival, we drive to Sardis in the valley of the gold-bearing river, Pactolus. Sardis was the capital of the Lydian Kingdom and home of Croesus, the legendarily wealthy Lydian king, long credited with the invention of coinage. After lunch at a local restaurant we ll visit the impressive ancient remains that have been unearthed beginning in 1958 by American archaeologists. Enjoy free time to relax at our hotel before rejoining the group for dinner along the coast. SWISSOTEL IZMIR (B,L,D) SATURDAY, JUNE 22 IZMIR / EPHESUS / BODRUM Today head to the famed site of Ephesus, which was first settled nearly 3,000 years ago and was subsequently one of the most beautiful cities in the ancient world. Much has been done to restore the white marble streets, theaters, baths, gymnasium, market and beautifully carved library. After a visit to the site, which includes the grand theater where St. Paul is said to have preached, tour the Ephesus Museum in nearby Selçuk. After lunch at a local restaurant continue to Bodrum, a picturesque city set on the Aegean Sea. THE MARMARA HOTEL BODRUM (B,L) SUNDAY, JUNE 23 BODRUM / EMBARK This morning, tour the castle at Halicarnassus, built in the 15th century by Crusaders using the ruins of the 4th-century-B.C.E. Mausoleum, one of the ancient world s seven wonders and the tomb of Mausolus, whose name is now eponymous with grand tombs. Continue to the Bodrum marina and upon arrival, board our private gülets for dinner,

5 CIA EPHESUS then cruise to a nearby cove for an overnight anchorage. OVERNIGHT ABOARD GÜLETS (B,L,D) MONDAY, JUNE 24 BODRUM / KNIDOS This morning anchor at Knidos, where Praxiteles statue of Aphrodite once stood. Enjoy lunch on board and enjoy an afternoon at leisure, swimming, kayaking or enjoying a juicy book. OVERNIGHT ABOARD GÜLETS (B,L,D) TUESDAY, JUNE 25 BOZBURUN / LORYMA Disembark at a small dock to visit the old fortress of Rhodian. Return to our gülets and cruise for three hours to a small cove near Knidos, having lunch on board. After anchoring at the cove, enjoy another afternoon of swimming and kayaking. OVERNIGHT ABOARD GÜLETS (B,L,D) WEDNESDAY, JUNE 26 EKINCIK / DALYAN Sail this morning to the cove at Ekincik and spend some time exploring the tiny town. Return to our gülets for lunch and then cruise to Dalyan. Disembark for a boat cruise up a river to the site of Kaunos and visit the site s theater, baths and temples before returning to our gülets. OVERNIGHT ABOARD GÜLETS (B,L,D) THURSDAY, JUNE 27 GÖCEK Arriving in Göcek, motor to Aga Limani Bay from where we visit the ancient city of Lydae and enjoy a short hike up to a hilltop studded with Roman and Byzantine ruins. Drop anchor near the island of Yassicalar and enjoy a festive farewell reception on our last night aboard the gülets. OVERNIGHT ABOARD GÜLETS (B,L,D) FRIDAY, JUNE 28 GÖCEK / DISEMBARK / DALAMAN / ISTANBUL After a final breakfast on board, disembark and continue to Dalaman for our flight to Istanbul. Enjoy the afternoon at leisure in Istanbul. PERA PALACE (B) SATURDAY, JUNE 29 ISTANBUL / U.S. Depart early this morning for Istanbul s International airport for flights back home. (B) Optional Post-trip Extension JUNE 29 TO JULY 3 (4 DAYS) CAPPADOCIA Spend an extra four nights in Turkey exploring the famed Cappadocia region, famous for its hundreds of cave churches and twisted, weather-carved, minaretlike rock formations. Also visit the open-air museum of Göreme with its exquisite Byzantine and medieval frescoes, then explore the underground city of Kaymakli. Visit the incredible Fortress of Uchisar before heading to Avanos, famous for its fine carpet, pottery and ceramics. Additional details and pricing will be sent to confirmed participants.

WHAT TO EXPECT This program is moderately strenuous and at times physically demanding. Daily programs involve one to three miles of walking or hiking that might include stairs without rails, high thresholds and uneven terrain such as cobbled paths. Regarding our five-night gület cruise, travelers will embark on a fleet of twoor three-masted teak sailboats of superior seagoing quality. Our gülets, each of which has from six to 12 two-person cabins, are among the best Turkey has to offer. Every gület has individual in-room toilets and showers, indoor and outdoor common areas, a cushioned lounge area and wide sun decks. Excursions during our cruise include hikes on rocky, hilly terrain and walking tours of small towns. Participants must be physically fit, active and in good health. We welcome travelers 15 years of age and older on this program.

An additional $200-per-person deposit is required to hold space for the optional post-trip extension. As a condition of participation, all confirmed participants are required to sign a Release of Liability. Cancellations & Refunds Deposits and any payments are refundable, less a $500-per-person cancellation fee, until 120 days prior to departure. After that date, refunds can be made only if the program is sold out and your place(s) can be resold, in which case a $1,000-perperson cancellation fee will apply. Insurance Stanford Travel/Study provides all travelers who are U.S. or Canadian citizens with minimal medical, accident and evacuation coverage under our group-travel insurance policy. Our group policy is intended to provide minimal levels of protection while you are traveling on this program. You may choose to subscribe to optional tripcancellation and baggage insurance. Information offering such insurance will be provided to travelers with their welcome materials. The product offered includes special benefits if you purchase your policy within 14 days of written confirmation of your participation on the trip. Eligibility We encourage membership in the Stanford Alumni Association as the program cost for nonmembers is $300 more than the members price. A person traveling as a guest paid for by a current member will not be charged the nonmember fee. We cannot accept any responsibility for losses or additional expenses due to delay or changes in air or other services, sickness, weather, strike, war, quarantine, force majeure or other causes beyond our control. All such losses or expenses will have to be borne by the passenger as tour rates provide arrangements only for the time stated. The right is reserved to cancel any program prior to departure in which case the entire payment will be refunded without further obligation on our part. The right is also reserved to decline to accept or retain any person as a member of the program. No refund will be made for an unused portion of any tour unless arrangements are made in sufficient time to avoid penalties. Baggage is carried at the owner s risk entirely. The airlines concerned are not to be held responsible for any act, omission or event during the time that passengers are not on board their plane or conveyance.
