3 CIBELES FOUNTAIN, MADRID Faculty Leader Peter Mann, PhD 12, is a lecturer in Stanford s Structured Liberal Education, a freshman humanities program where students study literature and philosophy in historical context. As an intellectual historian of modern Europe with a particular interest in Spain, Peter studies the politics of culture and the role of artists and intellectuals, from the Spanish- American War through the Spanish Civil War. He has written about the Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset, the legacy of Don Quixote and the politics of European identity in Spain during the first half of the 20th century. He is currently researching the experiences of foreign volunteers during the Spanish Civil War. Peter first fell in love with Spain when he spent a summer in college studying at the University of Salamanca. Since then, he has been back several times for research, for fun and for long walks on the Camino de Santiago. I can t wait to revisit some of my favorite cities in Spain Granada, Sevilla, Toledo, Madrid all beautiful, and all steeped in a fascinating and complicated past. 4 PORTUGAL Parador de Toledo Madrid Toledo S PAIN Córdoba Atlantic Seville Jerez Granada Mediterranean Sea Ocean Itinerary JUNE 23 Travel to Spain JUNE 24 & 25 Madrid Arrive and meet fellow travelers, our faculty leader and Young Explorer leaders over a welcome reception and dinner. Take a guided tour of the famous Museo Nacional del Prado, then explore the charming streets of the Old Quarter and enjoy a dinner of traditional tapas. JUNE 26 & 27 Toledo Toledo was the capital of medieval Spain, and in some ways little has changed there since the 16th century. A walking tour introduces us to the main sites, including the Cathedral, El Greco Museum and the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes. Also explore the Santa Cruz Museum, Zocodover Square and the Alcazar. There is free time to explore or just relax at our parador. JUNE 28 & 29 Córdoba & Granada In Córdoba, visit the mosque-turned-cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Jewish quarter. Continue to Granada, where we walk amid the exquisite grounds of the Generalife Gardens and see the most impressive monument in southern Spain, the Alhambra, a stunning palace-fortress complex that dates to the 9th century. This great Moorish citadel once sheltered schools, baths, barracks and gardens behind its fortified towers and high stone walls. Enjoy a lavish lunch at the Parador of Granada. JUNE 30 TO JULY 2 Seville & Jerez Explore Seville s old Jewish Quarter, the Royal Palace and the massive Cathedral where Christopher Columbus is buried. Then learn a few moves in a fast-paced flamenco class before we enjoy a performance of this traditional dance. Head out on a full-day excursion to Jerez, where we visit the Royal Andalusían School of Equestrian Art and Museum. Here Andalusían horses, an ancient and treasured breed, are trained in the classic art of dressage a kind of equine ballet during which they display skills known as airs above the ground. Lunch one day is at a local sherry winery. JULY 3 Travel Home

What to Expect We consider this program to be a moderately strenuous program that is at times physically demanding and busy. Some days require early-morning starts and/or go into the late evenings; we often have a full schedule of excursions, lectures and special events. Daily excursions involve one to three miles of walking with tours as long as three hours on city streets, which are, in some cases, uneven or cobblestoned. Many sites and buildings do not have elevators and also do not allow buses to pull up in front, thus requiring a walk of several minutes, sometimes uphill, to reach the entrance. Our journey requires travel by motor coach, with most drives no longer than 90 minutes. The day we travel from northern to southern Spain is the one exception. This full day involves 5-1/2 hours of driving, but we ll stop for several hours to explore Córdoba and to have lunch en route. Dinners in Spain are typically served late around 9:00 pm or later. While late dinners are the cultural norm, we request early dinners where possible, but please note that during our program, lunches will be served at 1:00 or 1:30 pm and dinners at 8:00 pm. This is quite early by Spanish standards! Staff will help families be prepared with snacks. Average temperatures in Spain in late June range from the mid-70s ( F) to the mid-80s in Madrid and low-90s in Andalucia; come prepared for potentially hot weather. Although all of the hotels and motor coaches used in this program are air-conditioned, some of the museums and other sites we visit are not air-conditioned. Participants must be physically fit, active and in good health. We welcome travelers 8 years of age and older on this program. Terms & Conditions Deposits, Payments, Cancellations & Refunds A $1,000-per-person deposit is required to reserve space for this program. Child rates apply to children ages 18 and younger on the date the adventure begins. Deposits and any payments are refundable, less a $500-per-person cancellation fee, until 120 days prior to departure. After that date, refunds can be made only if the program is sold out and your place(s) can be resold, in which case a $1,000-per-person cancellation fee will apply. As a condition of participation, all confirmed participants are required to sign a Release of Liability. Insurance Stanford Travel/Study provides all travelers who are U.S. or Canadian citizens with minimal medical, accident and evacuation coverage under our group-travel insurance policy. Our group policy is intended to provide minimal levels of protection while you are traveling on this program. You may choose to subscribe to optional tripcancellation and baggage insurance. Information offering such insurance will be provided to travelers with their welcome materials. The product offered includes special benefits if you purchase your policy within 14 days of written confirmation of your participation on the trip. Eligibility We encourage membership in the Stanford Alumni Association as the program cost for nonmembers is $300 more than the members price. A person traveling as a paid guest of a current member will not be charged the nonmember fee. We cannot accept any responsibility for losses or additional expenses due to delay or changes in air or other services, sickness, weather, strike, war, quarantine, force majeure or other causes beyond our control. All such losses or expenses will have to be borne by the passenger as tour rates provide arrangements only for the time stated. We reserve the right to make such alterations to this published itinerary as may be deemed necessary. The right is reserved to cancel any program prior to departure in which case the entire payment will be refunded without further obligation on our part. The right is also reserved to decline to accept or retain any person as a member of the program. No refund will be made for an unused portion of any tour unless arrangements are made in sufficient time to avoid penalties. The airlines concerned are not to be held responsible for any act, omission or event during the time passengers are not on board their plane or conveyance.
