2 The Rio Grande Valley and Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northeastern New Mexico have long cradled a unique blend of three cultures and traditions. Native American, Spanish and Anglo influences have all contributed to the stunning art, architecture and lifestyle of Santa Fe, Taos and the surrounding region. This amazing amalgam of cultures has drawn artists from around the world to offer their own contributions to the area s artistic heritage. On this program you ll join art professor Wanda Corn and local experts from the museums, churches, galleries, craft shops and markets that have made this region one of America s most important, vibrant and beloved art scenes. Marvel at the ancient Anasazi cliff dwellings in Bandelier National Monument. Explore the dazzling galleries, unique shops and fine restaurants that line Santa Fe s renowned Canyon Road. 3 Taos Pueblo Taos Abiquiu BANDELIER NATIONAL MONUMENT Chimayo Los Alamos Santa Fe NEW MEXICO e R i o G r a n d Albuquerque UNITED STATE NEW MEXICO Itinerary Wednesday, May 9 ALBUQUERQUE / TAOS Upon arrival at the Albuquerque airport, transfer with fellow travelers by private motorcoach to Taos, driving through the scenic Rio Grande Valley. Once in Taos, check in to our hotel with its beautiful grounds, then gather for a welcome reception and dinner. EL MONTE SAGRADO RESORT (D) Thursday, May 10 TAOS Visit the Harwood Museum, with its gallery dedicated to the Taos Society of Artists and its new wing that houses the works of contemporary artist, Agnes Martin. After lunch on our own, visit the Millicent Rogers Museum to view its superb collection of Indian and Spanish art gathered by the iconoclastic heiress of the Standard Oil fortune. Continue to Taos Pueblo, home of the Taos Indians. Built more than 500 years ago and considered by many to be one of the most beautiful structures in the world, it exemplifies architectural forms dating back to prehistoric times. We have unique access to the Pueblo, meeting with a family still living traditionally within its adobe walls. EL MONTE SAGRADO RESORT (B) Friday, May 11 TAOS / CHIMAYO / SANTA FE Depart this morning for Santa Fe, heading south via the historic High Road after stopping first at the tiny village of Ranchos de Taos just south of Taos to view the beautiful adobe church that inspired Georgia O Keeffe, Paul Strand, and many other painters and photographers. Wending our way along the High Road through charming Hispanic towns in the shadow of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, visit Irvin Trujillo, a 7th-generation master weaver, who demonstrates his technique for us and discusses traditional designs. After lunch at Rancho de Chimayo, visit the Sanctuario de Chimayo, one of New Mexico s oldest churches and known as the Lourdes of the Southwest. Pilgrims come from far and wide to partake of its soil, believed to have curative powers. Continue to Santa Fe and check in to our hotel near the Plaza. Dinner and the remainder of the evening are at leisure. INN ON THE ALAMEDA (B,L) Saturday, May 12 SANTA FE This morning s walking tour of Santa Fe gives us an introduction to its unique history, reflected in everything from its museums and galleries to its architectural treasures. Visit the Georgia O Keeffe Museum, a spectacular repository of some of the artist s greatest works. Pause for lunch at the world-renowned Coyote Café, the restaurant that introduced modern

4 S Cliff Dwellings at Bandelier santa fe art gallery Southwest cuisine to an international audience. Enjoy exploring independently this afternoon and evening. INN ON THE ALAMEDA (B,L) Sunday, May 13 SANTA FE / BANDELIER NATIONAL MONUMENT / Los alamos A beautiful drive through mountains and past mesas brings us to the ancient Anasazi cliff dwellings at Bandelier National Monument, once home to as many as 1,500 pueblo dwellers. Afterwards, enjoy a picnic lunch under the ponderosa pines, then head for Los Alamos and tour the Bradbury Science Museum. INN ON THE ALAMEDA (B,L) Monday, May 14 SANTA FE Today is free to explore Santa Fe on our own. Spend time in the historic plaza or wander along Canyon Road, Santa Fe s renowned gallery row. INN ON THE ALAMEDA (B) Tuesday, May 15 SANTA FE / ABIQUIU This morning ride through stunning red-rock butte and canyon country to the tiny village of Abiquiu. Georgia O'Keeffe lived out her last days here, creating images of that landscape, which, for many, capture the essence of the Southwest. After lunch at the rustic Abiquiu Inn, visit her home and studio. Return to Santa Fe for an evening at leisure. INN ON THE ALAMEDA (B,L) Wednesday, May 16 SANTA FE Take a morning excursion to Santa Fe s renowned hilltop museum complex, starting at the Folk Art Museum, which houses one of the most extensive collections of folk arts and crafts in the world. Continue to the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture to view its superb collection of Pueblo pottery. After lunch on our own, we have free time to visit Canyon Road again or head back to the Plaza and view some of the 17th-century structures found near the end of the Santa Fe Trail, the wagon trail that linked Santa Fe and Kansas City, Missouri, in the 1800s. Enjoy a farewell reception and dinner at a top local restaurant tonight. INN ON THE ALAMEDA (B,D) Thursday, May 17 SANTA FE / ALBUQUERQUE / HOME After breakfast at our hotel, return to Albuquerque s airport for flights home. (B)

Details on the group transfer to Taos on May 9 will be sent to confirmed participants. What to expect We consider this program to be moderately strenuous. Daily excursions may involve one to two miles of walking on uneven sidewalks or unpaved streets in historic districts. In some instances, such as Taos Pueblo and Bandelier National Monument, tours may involve steep or uneven steps and stairs without handrails. Some of our visits require a several-minutes walk to reach the start of our tour. Participants must be physically fit, active and in good health. Some lunches and most dinners are independent, allowing you to explore the many fine dining options in Taos and Santa Fe. We welcome travelers 15 years of age and older on this program.

6 Taos Pueblo Terms & Conditions Deposit & Final Payment A $1,000-per-person deposit is required to hold space for Santa Fe and Taos. Final payment is due 120 days prior to departure. Cancellations & Refunds Deposits and any payments are fully refundable, less a $500-perperson cancellation fee, until 120 days prior to departure. After that date, refunds can be made only if the program is sold out and your place(s) can be resold, in which case a $1,000-per-person cancellation fee will apply. We recommend trip-cancellation insurance; applications will be sent to you. Insurance Stanford Travel/Study provides all travelers who are U.S. or Canadian citizens with minimal medical, accident and evacuation coverage under our group-travel insurance policy. Our group policy is intended to provide minimal levels of protection while you are traveling on this program. We strongly recommend that you subscribe to optional baggage and trip-cancellation insurance. A brochure offering such insurance will be mailed with your confirmation about one week after we receive your deposit. The product offered in this brochure includes a special Waiver of Pre-Existing Conditions and coverage for Financial Insolvency and Terrorist Acts if you postmark your insurance payment within 15 days of the date listed on the confirmation letter. Eligibility We encourage membership in the Alumni Association as the program cost for nonmembers is $200 more than the members price. Parents and their children under 21 may travel on one membership. However, we can assume no liability for injury, damage, loss, accident, delay or irregularity in connection with the service of any automobile, motorcoach, launch or any other conveyance used in carrying out this program or for the acts or defaults of any company or person engaged in conveying the passenger or in carrying out the arrangements of the program. We cannot accept any responsibility for losses or additional expenses due to delay or changes in air or other services, sickness, weather, strike, war, quarantine, force majeure or other causes beyond our control. All such losses or expenses will have to be borne by the passenger as tour rates provide arrangements only for the time stated. We reserve the right to make such alterations to this published itinerary as may be deemed necessary. The right is reserved to cancel any program prior to departure in which case the entire payment will be refunded without further obligation on our part. The right is also reserved to decline to accept or retain any person as a member of the program. No refund will be made for an unused portion of any tour unless arrangements are made in sufficient time to avoid penalties. Baggage is carried at the owner s risk entirely. The airlines concerned are not to be held responsible for any act, omission or event during the time that passengers are not onboard their plane or conveyance. Neither the Alumni Association, Stanford University nor our operators accept liability for any carrier s cancellation penalty incurred by the purchase of a nonrefundable ticket in connection with the tour. 7 Wanda is charming beyond belief a complete, wonderful package. Her far-ranging and quick-thinking mind was always evident. She is an absolute pleasure. Robin Fayer, Mexico City Art and Architecture Seminar, 2008 Faculty Leader Wanda M. Corn, Halperin Professor Emerita of Art History at Stanford, specializes in the study of modern art and visual culture. Although she retired from teaching in 2007, she continues to be a guest curator of major museum exhibitions. Dr. Corn s scholarship on transatlantic modernism focuses on the exchanges and interdependencies of modern artists in Paris and New York, conceptualizing an Atlantic rim of avant-garde culture. She has just published Gertrude Stein: Five Stories to accompany an exhibition of the same name and another book on the decorations women made for the 1893 Woman s Building at the World Columbian Exposition in Chicago. She has spent considerable time in the Southwest and done extensive research and writing on Georgia O Keeffe s art and life in New Mexico. She has led 15 previous trips for Stanford, two of which were to the Santa Fe and Taos area.
