Alaska was my very first Travel/Study experience and I have never forgotten the spectacular scenery and wondrous wildlife. Join us next summer to experience this majestic beauty for yourself. McKinley ALASK U NITED S TATES Anchorage Kenai Peninsula Seward KENAI FJORDS NATIONAL PARK G A Itinerary Saturday, June 7 HOME / FAIRBANKS, ALASKA Depart from home and arrive independently in Fairbanks, Alaska. The evening is free to explore Fairbanks on our own. PIKES WATERFRONT LODGE Sunday, June 8 FAIRBANKS Gather for breakfast and a welcome orientation in our hotel where we meet fellow travelers and program staff. Then enjoy an excursion to nearby Creamer s Field, a popular area for birding, where we may have the opportunity to view sandhill cranes and other migratory birds. After lunch at a local restaurant, visit the University of Fairbanks Museum to gain valuable understanding of native cultures and traditional Alaskan life. After a welcome reception and dinner this evening, take advantage of the late summer daylight to visit the famous Alaska Pipeline and discuss its history. PIKES WATERFRONT LODGE (B,L,D) Monday, June 9 FAIRBANKS / DENALI NATIONAL PARK / KANTISHNA This morning board the historic Alaska Railroad, with special seating in the domed GoldStar cars, and ride the rails to Denali National Park. After lunch at the park entrance, board a private school bus for a memorable drive (of approximately 6 hours) along the Denali Park Road, which extends 91 miles to the old mining community of Kantishna. Along the way, cross rolling mountainsides, pass by cliffs and take in scenic vistas and prime wildlife viewing areas. DALL SHEEP It is not uncommon to encounter wildlife right on the park road, as Denali s Big Four caribou, moose, Dall sheep and grizzlies use this pathway on natural migrations. Upon arrival at the Kantishna Roadhouse, settle into our cabin accommodations and gather for dinner. Located on the banks of Moose Creek, Kantishna Roadhouse offers a glimpse back to life during gold mining days, with original structures such as a mining recorder s office and the original Roadhouse still intact on the property. KANTISHNA ROADHOUSE (B,L,D) Tuesday & Wednesday, June 10 & 11 DENALI NATIONAL PARK Enjoy two full days to explore and hike in the Kantishna region of Denali National Park. Options available at the Roadhouse include guided hiking with casual, moderate or challenging trails to choose from; natural history programs; gold panning and a dog sled demonstration. For those seeking a bird seye perspective of the

McKinley, optional flightseeing tours that depart from the nearby Kantishna airstrip will be offered daily (at additional cost, weather-dependent). KANTISHNA ROADHOUSE (B,L,D both days) Thursday, June 12 KANTISHNA / ANCHORAGE Depart the Roadhouse early this morning on a return scenic drive through Denali National Park, watching for wildlife en route to the park entrance. Then continue driving south to Anchorage, Alaska s largest city, stopping along the way for a picnic lunch and a short nature walk to stretch our legs. Arrive at our hotel and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant in town. CLARION SUITES (B,L,D) Friday, June 13 ANCHORAGE / SEWARD / KENAI FJORDS NATIONAL PARK Depart Anchorage on a scenic drive through Chugach National Forest as we head south along the Seward Highway to the coastal town of Seward. Board a small boat bound for Kenai Fjords National Park and enjoy a marine wildlife cruise along the rugged coastline, looking for orcas, humpback whales, Steller sea lions, sea otters, seabirds and more. Savor a light lunch onboard as we watch a nearby glacier dramatically calving before we arrive at our exclusive accommodations for the next three nights: Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge. Nestled in a protected tidal lagoon area, the Glacier Lodge offers miles of pristine coastline and views of the stunning Pedersen Glacier. Settle into our private cabins and enjoy dinner at the lodge. KENAI FJORDS GLACIER LODGE (B,L,D) Saturday & Sunday, June 14 & 15 KENAI FJORDS NATIONAL PARK Explore the wild delights of Kenai Fjords National Park for two full days. After breakfast in the main lodge each morning, choose from a wide array of activities best-suited to your energy level and interest. Guided options include hiking, sea kayaking and canoeing. Or just relax at the main lodge, where we can enjoy direct views of nature. Curious sea otters and seals frequent the lagoon, just steps from the private decks of our cabins. Each day, return to the main lodge in the late afternoon and enjoy a group dinner followed by an evening lecture. KENAI FJORDS GLACIER LODGE (B,L,D both days) Monday, June 16 KENAI FJORDS NATIONAL PARK / SEWARD / ANCHORAGE After breakfast, enjoy a last opportunity to kayak or hike before embarking our boat and returning to Seward. Board the Alaska Railroad again and enjoy a scenic ride through Alaska s backcountry. Following dinner onboard our train, arrive in Anchorage and check in to our hotel. CLARION SUITES (B,L,D) Tuesday, June 17 ANCHORAGE / HOME After breakfast, choose between two optional activities this morning in Anchorage: explore the Alaska Native Heritage Center for a tour of exhibits, and meet native artisans and craftsmen; or visit Earthquake Park and the Volcano Observatory for a scientist s perspective on Alaska s tectonic forces. Schedules include some long days, with early wake-up calls and excursions scheduled throughout the day and sometimes into the evenings. Because part of the Alaskan experience is the journey itself, we will experience great scenery and thrilling wildlife sightings during our travel by bus, boat and train. On some days, much of the time will be spent traveling to our next destination, with the longest continuous stretch being the six-hour drive into and out of Denali National Park. Weather in Alaska can change quickly, especially in the parks and reserves; we will send a complete list of packing guidelines to help you prepare for the experience. Our accommodations range from best-available hotels in the cities of Fairbanks and Anchorage to backcountry lodges located within Denali and Kenai Fjords national parks. Our lodge accommodations are simple, yet comfortably appointed, and allow us up-close access to outstanding wildlife-viewing opportunities.

6 Pedersen Glacier, Kenai Fjords Terms & Conditions Deposit & Final Payment A $1,000 per-person deposit is required to hold your space on this program. Complete and return the attached reservation form or sign up online. Final payment is due 120 days prior to departure. As a condition of participation, all confirmed participants are required to sign a Release of Liability. Cancellations & Refunds Deposits and any payments are refundable, less a $500-per-person cancellation fee, until 120 days prior to departure. After that date, refunds can be made only if the program is sold out and your place(s) can be resold, in which case a $1,000-perperson cancellation fee will apply. We recommend trip-cancellation insurance; applications will be sent to you. Insurance Stanford Travel/Study provides all travelers who are U.S. or Canadian citizens with minimal medical, accident and evacuation coverage under our group-travel insurance policy. Our group policy is intended to provide minimal levels of protection while you are traveling on this program. We strongly recommend that you subscribe to optional baggage and trip-cancellation insurance. A brochure offering such insurance will be mailed with your confirmation about one week after we receive your deposit. The product offered in this brochure includes special benefits if you postmark your insurance payment within a specified window: 15 days of the date listed on the confirmation letter for the Waiver of Pre-existing Conditions and coverage for Financial Insolvency; 21 days for the Cancel for Any Reason benefit. 7 Faculty Leader SIMON KLEMPERER, is a geophysicist who studies the growth, tectonic evolution and deformation of continents. He currently serves as director of the undergraduate program in geophysics at Stanford and has taken a special interest in introducing his students to scientific research, involving them in his fieldwork on three continents. He has also led student geology trips to Great Britain, Iceland and Alaska. The academic underpinnings of these trips cannot be matched. My travel with Stanford brings me a fuller understanding of the world. Diane Wara, 64 Professor Klemperer first visited Alaska 20 years ago, when he carried out research via small planes in the Aleutian Islands and recorded seismic data in the region between Russia and America up to the edge of the Arctic ice. A subsequent sabbatical at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks allowed him to explore further, climbing volcanoes, canoeing the Yukon and driving the Haul Road to Prudhoe Bay. Alaska is one of earth s great natural laboratories in which active earthquake faults and volcanoes allow us to study plate tectonics as it happens, explains Professor Klemperer. During our program, he will discuss the geological assemblage of Alaska, including the presence of gold and oil, earthquakes, climate change and glaciers.
