2 Year after year, the renown of Chilean wine grows and grows. On this program, our travelers get to sample some of Chile s finest wines at some nine wineries in several wine growing areas from the world s largest organic winery in the Casablanca Valley to Latin America s largest producer of wine in Santiago. But the vineyard visits are just one part of our Chilean journey. We ll also uncover the many treasures of Chile s capital city and the colorful port city of Valparaiso; visit the whimsical coastal home of Chile s famous poet, Pablo Neruda; and even have time for a cooking class with a top Chilean chef. 3 Faculty Leader Scott Burns is the most enthusiastic lecturer I have met. One could not help but be interested in what he was explaining, either in a lecture or any time during the trip. MICHELLE MELLEN, CANADIAN ROCKIES BY RAIL, 2012 SCOTT BURNS, BS 69, MS 70, is a professor emeritus of geology at Portland State University and has taught geology and ecology at the university level for more than 45 years. His passion for mountain ecology began when he visited a small village in Switzerland in 1970 to teach a new course called alpine ecology. Since then he has become well-versed on the unique natural forces that shape mountain environments as well as the plants and animals that inhabit them. His knowledge of geology, local history and botany is broad, and his enthusiasm contagious. He is the recipient of numerous awards for excellence in teaching and has led 24 previous Travel/Study programs. During our trip, he will discuss the geology and terrior in Chile that creates ideal conditions for growing wine grapes. Enjoy free time on Monday to explore Santiago s main plaza, museums, monuments and markets, then meet up with fellow travelers for a welcome wine reception and dinner. RITZ CARLTON SANTIAGO (D: 3/11) TUESDAY, MARCH 12 SANTIAGO This morning, pay a visit to Latin America s largest wine producer, Concha y Toro, where we partake in a private tour and tasting, followed by lunch at the legendary winery, founded in On our tour of Santiago this afternoon, take in the city sights, including the Plaza de Armas, the Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago and the presidential palace. Enjoy dinner and the evening independently. RITZ CARLTON SANTIAGO (B,L) WEDNESDAY, MARCH 13 SANTIAGO / CASA- BLANCA VALLEY / VALPARAISO Depart Santiago this morning, head for the coast, stopping at Emiliana Organic Vineyards in the Casablanca Valley to check out the single-largest source of estate-grown organic wines in the world. Drive a short distance to Kingston Family Vineyards, one of Chile s top artisan wineries and founded by Stanford alum Courtney Kingston, MBA 97. Continue on to Valparaiso, a coastal city with a landscape strikingly similar to San Francisco s, and check in to our boutique hotel (a former palace), our home for the next three nights. Savor a classic Chilean seafood dinner at a restaurant by the sea this evening. HOTEL PALACIO ASTORECA (B,L,D) THURSDAY, MARCH 14 VALPARAISO / ISLA NEGRA / LO ARBACA This morning head south on an hour-long drive to Casa de Isla Negra, the late Nobel laureate Pablo Neruda s favorite domicile, which overlooks the sea and is filled with maritime curios. Continue to Lo Arbaca for lunch and wine tasting at Casa Marin, an award-winning vineyard known for its sauvignon blanc. Return to Valparaiso for an evening at leisure. HOTEL PALACIO ASTORECA (B,L) FRIDAY, MARCH 15 VALPARAISO Depart on a walking tour of Valparaiso this morning, taking in views of the city s hillsides carpeted with brightly painted houses and the Andes off in the distance. Stop at a popular local restaurant for lunch before spending the afternoon exploring Valparaiso independently. In the early evening, enjoy a stroll and dinner in nearby Viña del Mar. HOTEL PALACIO ASTORECA (B,L,D) SATURDAY, MARCH 16 VALPARAISO / COLCHAGUA VALLEY / SANTA CRUZ Depart Valparaiso for Santa Cruz, and en route, visit the innovative De Martino winery, founded in 1934, and participate in a blending workshop, followed by lunch. Continue south to the Colchagua Valley wine growing region and stop for wine tasting at Casa Silva, one of Chile s most prestigious wineries. 5 KINGSTON FAMILY VINEYARDS E SUNDAY, MARCH 17 SANTA CRUZ Set off on foot this morning for a guided tour of the largest private museum in Chile, which houses collections of pre- Colombian ceramics, Mapuche silver and huaso cowboy gear. Enjoy lunch at Casa Lapostolle winery, located in the Apalta Valley, and sample a selection of its Cuvee Alexander wines. Return to our hotel for a late afternoon and evening at leisure. HOTEL SANTA CRUZ (B,L) MONDAY, MARCH 18 SANTA CRUZ Today drive to the Viu Manent winery to attend a cooking class at chef Pilar Rodriguez s adjacent studio. After lunch, enjoy a wine tasting at the winery. Take in the view overlooking the vineyards of the Colchagua Valley during dinner at a fine Italian restaurant this evening. HOTEL SANTA CRUZ (B,L,D) TUESDAY, MARCH 19 SANTA CRUZ / CACHAPOAL VALLEY / SANTIAGO Leave Santa Cruz this morning to return to Santiago, stopping in the Cachapoal Valley for lunch at the iconic Altair winery, which sits at the foot of the Andes. Once back in the capital, enjoy free time before a farewell reception and dinner at one of Chile s up-andcoming restaurants. WHAT TO EXPECT We consider this to be a moderately strenuous program. Half to full days of touring are balanced with free time to explore the towns we will visit. Daily programs involve one to three miles of walking in vineyards, at wineries and on city tours and may involve extended periods of standing. Participants will encounter uneven terrain, including some dirt and cobblestone paths, and must be able to walk up and down hills. In some instances, elevators are unavailable. Participants must be physically fit, active and in good health. We welcome travelers 18 years of age and older on this program. As a condition of participation, all confirmed participants are required to sign a Release of Liability. Cancellations & Refunds Deposits and any payments are refundable, less a $500-per-person cancellation fee, until 120 days prior to departure. After that date, refunds can be made only if the program is sold out and your place(s) can be resold, in which case a $1,000-per-person cancellation fee will apply. Insurance Stanford Travel/Study provides all travelers who are U.S. or Canadian citizens with minimal medical, accident and evacuation coverage under our group-travel insurance policy. Our group policy is intended to provide minimal levels of protection while you are traveling on this program. You may choose to subscribe to optional tripcancellation and baggage insurance. Information offering such insurance will be provided to travelers with their welcome materials. The product offered includes special benefits if you purchase your policy within 14 days of written confirmation of your participation on the trip. Eligibility We encourage membership in the Stanford Alumni Association as the program cost for nonmembers is $300 more than the members price. A person traveling as a guest paid for by a current member will not be charged the nonmember fee.
