2 Imagine an enchanted alpine realm that few humans have witnessed firsthand in one of the last pristine wilderness areas of North America. Our Canadian heli-hiking adventure takes us to terrain once achievable only by the hardiest mountaineers, but now accessible to novice day hikers and experienced climbers alike, thanks to our team of highly skilled mountain guides and world-class helicopter pilots. With faculty leader and mountaineering enthusiast Roz Naylor, discover the grand landscapes of the Purcell and Selkirk mountains as we walk among remote peaks, majestic glaciers, alpine lakes and wildflower-carpeted meadows. It s an awe-inspiring experience not to be missed! BRETT S. THOmPSON, 83, DIRECTOR, STANFORD TRAVEL/STUDY Highlights FLY HIGH in our deluxe helicopters and hike scenic trails with expert guides at your desired ability level. RELAX in our cozy mountain lodge, the perfect retreat at the end of a day s outdoor adventure. LEARN about how environmental change is affecting this dramatic alpine landscape.

3 C ANADA M o u n t a i n s R o c k y ALBERTA CANAD BRITISH COLUMBIA Bobbie Burns Lodge Banff Calga Itinerary WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 13 DEPART U.S. / CALGARY, ALBERTA, CANADA / BANFF Depart on a flight to Calgary and transfer by coach to Banff, nestled in the heart of Canada s first national park. Enjoy a welcome reception at our legendary deluxe château that has breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. FAIRmONT BANFF SPRINGS HOTEL Monashee Mountains Selkirk Mountains THURSDAY, AUGUST 14 BANFF / BOBBIE BURNS LODGE, BRITISH COLUMBIA Depart Banff early this morning and travel along the shores of the Bow River past the soaring mountain citadels of Banff National Park through Yoho National Park to Golden, British Columbia. Drive through the Rocky Mountain Trench with the Rockies to the east and the Columbia Mountains to the west. Board our helicopter and enjoy a short, scenic flight to our lodge, where we are outfitted with all the necessary hiking equipment. Lunch is followed by a helicopter ride to a mountain top from where we begin hiking. Fly back to the lodge for a relaxing evening and dinner. BOBBIE BURNS LODGE (B,L,D) FRIDAY TO TUESDAY, AUGUST BOBBIE BURNS LODGE Spend five full days hiking in the beautiful Selkirk and Purcell mountains with our expert mountain guides. Hike in various scenic areas, enjoying views of ancient glaciers, alpine meadows, undulating ridgelines, meandering streams and stunning wildflowers along the way. A variety of options will be available each day, depending on weather conditions and the interests of the group. We can accommodate all levels of interest and aptitude. You may choose to take leisurely or moderate hikes in spectacular settings or opt for our high-adrenaline experiences, such as the Bobbie Burns ropes course. Purcell Mountains Another option is to summit the challenging Mt. Nimbus, climbing up metal rungs over two spires, traversing a suspension bridge 2,000 feet above the valley floor and climbing up the most extensive via ferrata (a fixed steel cable climbing route) in North America. Or opt for the Conrad Glacier Adventure Hike, an ambitious, yet rewarding, experience that includes ziplining, crossing rivers over cabled bridges, navigating wild canyons, clipping into cables to maneuver around powerful waterfalls and ascending a colorful vertical rock slab by via ferrata. At the end of each day we fly back to our cozy lodge for drinks and snacks, followed by a delicious, family-style dinner with fellow hikers and guides where we share tales from the day s adventures. Enjoy the warmth of the sauna or simply curl up with a book by the fire. On Tuesday evening we

4 A ry celebrate our journey with a farewell reception and dinner at our lodge. BOBBIE BURNS LODGE (B,L,D ALL DAYS) WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 20 BOBBIE BURNS LODGE / CALGARY / U.S. Following breakfast, drive through Kootenay and Banff National Park back to Calgary. Arrive at the airport and board early-evening flights back to the U.S. (B,L) What to Expect The Bobbie Burns Lodge is located in some of the most pristine wilderness of Canada s western mountains with breathtaking scenery and access to prime hiking terrain. A typical day begins with a 30-minute stretch session, followed by a hearty breakfast. Grab a pack lunch and join our guides in preparation for the morning s helicopter flight. Top-quality hiking equipment, including boots, rain gear, walking sticks and daypacks, is provided by the lodge. A team of highly experienced, fully qualified mountaineering and wilderness guides leads all our hikes, which take place at altitudes between 6,000 and 9,000 feet. The terrain covers a whole spectrum of mountain landscapes, including wildflower-carpeted meadows, icy glaciers, clear azure lakes and alpine forests. Hikers are divided into groups of approximately 10 to 12 people, according to interests and fitness levels, and the day is as leisurely or as strenuous as each group decides. We return to the lodge in the late afternoon for relaxation, dinner and, on most nights, an evening lecture. Our lodge features comfortable accommodations with private bathrooms. Public facilities include a hot tub, sauna, fishing pond, spacious lounge, well-stocked bar and dining area where hearty, delicious meals are served family-style so guests and guides can gather around the table and share stories from the day s adventures. Anyone may participate in the easier walks and strolls. In order to participate in the more intensive hiking and climbing adventures as described above, you should be able to jog a mile, walk four miles, ride a bike for eight miles, or be able to complete a similarly strenuous workout. The via ferratas (Italian for iron roads ) are vertical pathways that feature permanently fixed cables that provide greater safety and metal rung ladders to make climbing easy. They require no special skill or prior experience. If you are physically fit and can climb a ladder you can do it. We welcome children 11 years of age and older on this program.

7 Roz Naylor was absolutely marvelous in every regard. Her engaging, thought-provoking lectures were a pleasure to attend. Irene Balcar DIllon, 74, MD 77, & WIllIaM DIllon, lands of the himalayas, 2012 Faculty Leader Rosamond Roz naylo R, Phd 89, Stanford teacher and researcher, explores areas of junction relating to economic development and environmental science. She directs the Center on Food Security and Environment at Stanford and is involved in field-level research projects throughout the world. Roz teaches courses in economics and at the School of Earth Sciences on topics such as human society and environmental change and the world food economy. She loves that her work provides her with the opportunity to explore cultures, farming practices and policies in a wide variety of countries. When she is not in the field or in the classroom, Roz and her husband, Wally, who are avid skiers and climbers, have shared mountain adventures around the world, including the Canadian Rockies. On this trip, she will discuss how the mountains have inspired successful business models, how we value the world around us and whether technology can save us from environmental collapse.
