Enjoy a welcome reception in our deluxe chateau, with breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. FAIRMONT BANFF SPRINGS SUNDAY, AUGUST 14 BANFF / PURCELL MOUNTAINS, BRITISH COLUMBIA Depart Banff and travel westward into British Columbia to the helipad near Parson, where we meet our helicopter. After a thorough safety briefing, we take a short, scenic flight to our first lodge, where we are outfitted with all the necessary hiking equipment and have time to settle into our comfortable accommodations. Lunch is followed by an afternoon of helihiking in the high country. BOBBIE BURNS LODGE (L,D) MONDAY & TUESDAY, AUGUST 15 & 16 PURCELL MOUNTAINS Enjoy two full days of heli-hiking in the Purcells with our expert mountain guides, who guide us to different scenic spots each day depending on conditions and the interests of the group. At the end of each day return to our warm, cozy lodge for a delicious, family-style dinner with fellow hikers and guides and share tales from the day s adventures. BOBBIE BURNS LODGE (B,L,D BOTH DAYS) WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 17 PURCELL MOUNTAINS / THE BUGABOOS Following breakfast at the Bobbie Burns Lodge, take a helicopter ride to Grizzly Ridge, where we begin our all-day hike to the high country in the nearby Bugaboo Range, after which we helicopter to our new lodgings. Our luggage is transferred separately and awaiting us in our rooms upon arrival. BUGABOO LODGE (B,L,D) THURSAY & FRIDAY, AUGUST 18 & 19 THE BUGABOOS From the Bugaboo Lodge, we enjoy two full days of helihiking at our desired level of experience. Or choose to remain at our deluxe lodge and enjoy some quiet time on the sun-drenched lawn in view of the surrounding glacier-covered peaks. On Friday, enjoy a farewell reception and dinner at our lodge. BUGABOO LODGE (B,L,D BOTH DAYS) SATURDAY, AUGUST 20 THE BUGABOOS / CALGARY / U.S. Following breakfast, enjoy a last helicopter ride to meet our coach for the drive back to Calgary. 4 A gary What to Expect HELI-HIKING FROM THE BOBBIE BURNS AND BUGABOO LODGES Our lodges are located in some of the most pristine wilderness of Canada s western mountains with breathtaking scenery and access to prime hiking terrain. A typical day at the lodges begins with a 30-minute stretch session, followed by a hearty breakfast. We gather our boots, daypacks, rain gear and a pack lunch and join our guides in preparation for the morning s helicopter flight. Top-quality hiking equipment, including boots, rain gear, walking sticks and daypacks, is provided by the lodges. A team of highly experienced, fully qualified mountaineering and wilderness guides leads all our hikes, which take place at altitudes of between 6,000 and 9,000 feet. The terrain covers a whole spectrum of montane landscape, including wildflower-carpeted meadows, icy glaciers, clear azure lakes and alpine forest. Hikers are divided into groups of approximately 10 to 12 people, according to interests and fitness levels, and the day is as leisurely or as strenuous as each group decides. We return to the lodge in the late afternoon for relaxation, dinner and, on most nights, an evening lecture. Both lodges feature comfortable, twin-bedded accommodations with private bathrooms. Public facilities include a hot tub, sauna, fishing pond, spacious lounge, well-stocked bar and dining area where hearty, delicious meals are served family-style so guests and guides can gather around the table and share stories from the day s adventures. Ecologically sensitive practices and safety are top priorities during heli-hiking. Our Bell 212 helicopters seat 14 passengers and are flown by pilots with extensive (often more than 20 years) experience and outstanding safety records. Landing sites have been scouted over numerous seasons and are chosen for their safety and access to beautiful areas. All hikers are given a full helicopter safety briefing before our first flight. We welcome travelers 12 years of age and older on this program.

6 Terms & Conditions Deposit & Final Payment A $1,000 per-person deposit is required to hold space for the Canadian Heli-Hiking program. Final payment is due 120 days prior to departure. Cancellations & Refunds Deposits and any payments are fully refundable, less a $500-per-person cancellation fee, until 120 days prior to departure. After that date, refunds can be made only if the program is sold out and your place(s) can be resold, in which case a $1,000-perperson cancellation fee will apply. We recommend trip-cancellation insurance; applications will be sent to you. Insurance Stanford Travel/Study provides all travelers who are U.S. or Canadian citizens with minimal medical, accident and evacuation coverage under our group-travel insurance policy. Our group policy is intended to provide minimal levels of protection while you are traveling on this program. We strongly recommend that you subscribe to optional baggage and trip-cancellation insurance. A brochure offering such insurance will be mailed with your confirmation about one week after we receive your deposit. The product offered in this brochure includes a special Waiver of Pre-Existing Conditions and coverage for Financial Insolvency and Terrorist Acts if you postmark your insurance payment within 15 days of the date listed on the confirmation letter. Eligibility We encourage membership in the Alumni Association as the program cost for nonmembers is $200 more than the members price. Stanford alumni may become Annual ($75) or Life ($495) Members. Stanford parents, faculty, staff, interns, residents and fellows may become Installment Members ($90 down, $115/year for four years) or Life Members ($495). Nonalumni may become Life Affiliates (one-time fee, $650). Parents and their children under 21 may travel on one membership. However, we can assume no liability for injury, damage, loss, accident, delay or irregularity in connection with the service of any automobile, motorcoach, launch or any other conveyance used in carrying out this program or for the acts or defaults of any company or person engaged in conveying the passenger or in carrying out the arrangements of the program. We cannot accept any responsibility for losses or additional expenses due to delay or changes in air or other services, sickness, weather, strike, war, quarantine, force majeure or other causes beyond our control. All such losses or expenses will have to be borne by the passenger as tour rates provide arrangements only for the time stated. We reserve the right to make such alterations to this published itinerary as may be deemed necessary. The right is reserved to cancel any program prior to departure in which case the entire payment will be refunded without further obligation on our part. The right is also reserved to decline to accept or retain any person as a member of the program. No refund will be made for an unused portion of any tour unless arrangements are made in sufficient time to avoid penalties. Baggage is carried at the owner s risk entirely. The airlines concerned are not to be held responsible for any act, omission or event during the time that passengers are not onboard their plane or conveyance. Neither the Alumni Association, Stanford University nor our operators accept liability for any carrier s cancellation penalty incurred by the purchase of a nonrefundable ticket in connection with the tour. Program price is based on rates in effect in September 2010 and is subject to change without notice to reflect fluctuations in exchange rates, tariffs or fuel charges. 7 Rarely does one find a professor as enthusiastic as Scott. He makes learning FUN! He is a gem. CHARLOTTE MINARD, 52, MA 53, D OLOM ITES WALK, 2006 Faculty Leader SCOTT BURNS, BS 69, MS 70, is a professor of geology at Portland State University and has taught geology and ecology at the university level for over 40 years. His enthusiasm for mountain ecology began when he visited a small village in Switzerland in 1970 to teach a new course called alpine ecology. Since then he has become well versed on the unique natural forces that shape mountain environments as well as the plants and animals that inhabit them. The geology of the Pacific Northwest and southern British Columbia is especially dynamic, says Professor Burns, and I look forward to sharing my love and knowledge of the area with my fellow Stanford travelers. During our trip, he will help unravel for us such stories as the adaptation of plants and animals to the mountain ecology of southern British Columbia and the geologic origin and glacial history of the Rocky Mountains. He is the recipient of numerous awards for excellence in teaching and has led 20 previous Travel/Study programs.
