3 Faculty Leader Erin Mordecai, who joined the biology department at Stanford as an assistant professor in January of 2015, studies the ecology and evolution of infectious diseases in human and wild systems such as malaria, dengue fever and Zika, as well as fungal pathogens in grasses in California. Her research interests revolve around how environmental change affects infectious disease, particularly the impacts of climate change, deforestation, human activities and invasive species on mosquito-borne disease and disease in plants and wildlife. Her research combines mathematical modeling and empirical work. JUNE 17 & 18 Chobe National Park, Botswana Discover the wonders of Chobe National Park, from partaking in activities and a lecture at our lodge to going on a land-based game drive or a boat cruise on the Chobe River in search of the park s giraffes, baboons, impalas and elephants. Take part in a festive boma dinner, a traditional outdoor BBQ buffet whose roots stem from the African bush, and enjoy live music and dancing. JUNE 19 & 20 Victoria Falls, Zambia Spend two days at spectacular Victoria Falls. One of the world s greatest natural wonders, Victoria Falls drops 360 feet into the Zambezi Gorge. An average of almost two million cubic feet of water cascades every minute over the edge of the falls, which stretch an amazing one mile in width. The constant mist, nicknamed the smoke that thunders, creates an environment simulating a tropical rain forest and is visible from the winding footpath along the rim. Enjoy a sunset cruise and some leisure time for optional activities. Relax at our luxurious hotel, set on the banks of the Zambezi River. JUNE 21 TO 23 Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve, South Africa Go on an escorted, open-vehicle game drive in search of Africa s Big Five the lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros and buffalo, all of which dwell in the reserve. Take the opportunity to observe the reserve s nocturnal inhabitants on a memorable nighttime safari. Enjoy the lodge s fun educational activities, as well as its pools, viewing decks and spa. JUNE 24 TO 26 Cape Town Ride a cable car to the summit of Table Mountain to take in the sweeping views of the area. Go on an excursion to the scenic Cape Peninsula, traveling along the Atlantic seaboard via Chapman s Peak Drive, considered one of the world s most spectacular marine drives, to the Cape of Good Hope, stopping en route to view the colony of African penguins that hang out at Boulders Beach. Explore a sobering chapter in the history of South Africa, traveling by boat to Robben Island and touring the maximum security prison where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. What to Expect Schedules sometimes include long days with early wakeup calls and activities throughout the day (and into the evenings). Our game viewing drives will be spent viewing wildlife from specially equipped 4-wheel-drive safari vehicles with pop-up roofs for easy viewing and photography. You can expect drives of up to four hours in length on bumpy, dusty and occasionally muddy roads. Expect temperatures at this time of year to range from the lower 50s ( F) to the mid 70s. Participants must be physically fit, active and in good health. We welcome travelers 6 years of age and older on this program. Terms & Conditions Deposits, Payments, Cancellations & Refunds A $1,000 per-person deposit is required to hold your space. Call the Travel/Study office at (650) or sign up online at alumni.stanford.edu/trip?africafamily2019. Final payment is due 120 days prior to departure. Child rates apply to children ages 18 and younger on the date the adventure begins. Deposits and any payments are refundable, less a $500-per-person cancellation fee, until 120 days prior to departure. After that date, refunds can be made only if the program is sold out and your place(s) can be resold, in which case a $1,000-per-person cancellation fee will apply. As a condition of participation, all confirmed participants are required to sign a Release of Liability. Insurance Stanford Travel/Study provides all travelers who are U.S. or Canadian citizens with minimal medical, accident and evacuation coverage under our group-travel insurance policy. Our group policy is intended to provide minimal levels of protection while you are traveling on this program. You may choose to subscribe to optional trip-cancellation and baggage insurance. Information offering such insurance will be provided to travelers with their welcome materials. The product offered includes special benefits if you purchase your policy within 14 days of written confirmation of your participation on the trip. Eligibility We encourage membership in the Stanford Alumni Association as the program cost for nonmembers is $300 more than the members price. A person traveling as a paid guest of a current member will not be charged the nonmember fee. However, we can assume no liability for injury, damage, loss, accident, delay or irregularity in connection with the service of any automobile, motor coach, launch or any other conveyance used in carrying out this program or for the acts or defaults of any company or person engaged in conveying the passenger or in carrying out the arrangements of the program. We cannot accept any responsibility for losses or additional expenses due to delay or changes in air or other services, sickness, weather, strike, war, quarantine, force majeure or other causes beyond our control. All such losses or expenses will have to be borne by the passenger as tour rates provide arrangements only for the time stated. We reserve the right to make such alterations to this published itinerary as may be deemed necessary. The right is reserved to cancel any program prior to departure in which case the entire payment will be refunded without further obligation on our part. The right is also reserved to decline to accept or retain any person as a member of the program. No refund will be made for an unused portion of any tour unless arrangements are made in sufficient time to avoid penalties. Baggage is carried at the owner s risk entirely. The airlines concerned are not to be held responsible for any act, omission or event during the time passengers are not on board their plane or conveyance. Neither the Stanford Alumni Association, Stanford University nor our operators accept liability for any carrier s cancellation penalty incurred by the purchase of a nonrefundable ticket in connection with the tour.
