1 50 YEARS LATER: A CELEBRATION IN THE LAND OF KNIGHTS AND MAIDENS July 18 to 26, 2018
2 In 1968, the Stanford Alumni Association offered its first Summer Alumni College, a river cruise on the Rhine, under the direction of its inaugural director, Rixford Snyder, 30, MA 34, PhD 40. Fifty years later, in 2018, I am thrilled to offer a replica of our very first trip, this time reimagined for families (and one of our five Stanford Family Adventures scheduled for 2018). I recently returned from a trip on the MS Amadeus Silver III, and I am very excited to invite you to join me on this beautifully contemporary ship, especially built for Europe s rivers, as we cruise from Basel to Amsterdam, including through the stunning Rhine Gorge. Also joining us with his family will be Stanford favorite, Professor Norman Naimark, 66, MA 68, PhD 72, who will illuminate us on the history of this stunning river route. BRETT S. THOMPSON, 83, DIRECTOR, STANFORD TRAVEL/STUDY AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS Highlights VISIT Strasbourg, the official seat of the European Parliament, where both German and French cultures blend harmoniously. COVER: HEIDELBERG, GERMANY IGNITE a love of learning in Heidelberg, home of one of the oldest-surviving universities in the world, founded in CAPTION LISTEN to the legends of the Rhine Gorge, a World Heritage site, endowed with castles and stories of knights, dwarves and bewitching maidens. SOAK UP the stunning plethora of art and history found in Amsterdam, from Rembrandt and Vermeer to Anne Frank and Daniel Fahrenheit. RHINE GORGE, GERMANY
3 I never expected to be so enthralled by the lectures. Norman was not only a great speaker and teacher but he was also readily available for questions. KATHERINE DEWILDE, MBA 75, DALMATIAN COAST COLLEGE, 2009 Stanford Faculty Leader Professor NORMAN NAIMARK, 66, MA 68, PHD 72, a former chair of Stanford s history department and Fisher Family Director of Stanford Global Studies Division, is the director of the Division of International, Comparative and Area Studies at Stanford, as well as the Robert and Florence McDonnell Chair in East European History and the Burke Family Director of Stanford s Bing Overseas Studies Program. Professor Naimark has spent a lot of time in Germany as a scholar. He recalls, I went on my first Rhine River trip as a boy I was an army brat growing up all over the world. My most memorable vacation was actually a Stanford Travel/Study trip with opera at night. Known at Stanford for his warmth and wit, the popular faculty leader has led more than 25 past Travel/Study programs; he and his wife, Stanford history professor Katherine Jolluck, with teenage son Ben have participated in five previous Stanford Family Adventures. On this program, Professor Naimark will offer lectures on such topics as modern German history, politics and culture, as well as interesting facts about the Rhine River and the Rhineland. Robert and Florence McDonnell Professor of Eastern European History, Stanford University Senior fellow, Hoover Institution, and Freeman-Spogli Institute for International Affairs Axel Springer Fellow at the American Academy in Berlin in 2010 Recipient of the Richard W. Lyman Award for outstanding faculty volunteer service, Stanford Alumni Association, 1995; Dean s Teaching Award, Stanford University, , ; and the Officer s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, 1996 BA 66, MA 68, and PhD 72, history, Stanford University SIGN UP ONLINE: alumni.stanford.edu/trip?rhinefamily2018 OR BY PHONE: (650) STRASBOURG, FRANCE

About Family Adventures Our Family Adventures are built from the ground up, always keeping families traveling with children in mind. That means that everything from the timing to the activities to the special events is selected to enhance the overall experience for your entire family. You ll spend most of your time on tours together as a family. On occasion the kids will go off adventuring with their Young Explorer Leaders while grownups enjoy adults-only activities such as extended museum and site tours. Parents and grandparents can enjoy lectures by renowned Stanford faculty and scholars while kids meet in their Young Explorer groups. Young Explorer Leaders at least one Leader for every 10 kids come prepared with games, activities and lots of energy to keep kids engaged and entertained. Young Explorer Program Kids consistently give our Family Adventures an enthusiastic thumbs up because each trip features our outrageously cool Young Explorer program! Young Explorers are grouped with travelers their own age to take part in awesome activities that are both educational and fun. Young Explorers can channel some of their boundless energy playing games and doing craft activities in their Young Explorer groups. They ll also challenge their minds during hands-on, educational-but-fun activities that promise to fuel their creativity and spark their inner genius. Young Explorers can also look forward to incredible kids-only adventures, tours and meals. Our Young Explorer program is led by recent Stanford grads who have spent their summers working as counselors at Stanford Sierra Camp. Young Explorer Leaders are pros at understanding and adapting to the personalities and interests of each Young Explorer, which means that everyone has a great time.
