Travel from cities humming with newfound vitality to evocative historical sites spanning millennia, beginning in Czechia s ever-fascinating capital, Prague, filled with ancient architectural masterpieces, continuing to Dresden, celebrated for its art museums and impressive post-wwii reconstruction, and ending in Berlin, a city vibrant with modernism and memories alike. Extend the learning adventure and join Professor Naimark on a post-trip extension to Kraków in Poland, including a moving visit to the Auschwitz concentration camp now a memorial museum. BRETT S. 3 Faculty Leader Dr. Naimark s lectures were indispensable. His lectures provided critical structure for thinking about local history and current political issues. CHERYL PETERSEN, CROATIA AND BEYOND, 2016 Professor NORMAN NAIMARK, 66, MA 68, PHD 72, a former director of Stanford s Bing Overseas Studies Program and former chair of the history department, is the Robert and Florence McDonnell Professor of Eastern European History and a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and the Freeman- Spogli Institute for International Studies. He recalls, I was first in Berlin as a boy, visiting with my (army) family before The Wall went up. I spent a lot of time in the divided city as a student and young professor and now go regularly to Berlin as part of my work. Known at Stanford for his warmth and wit, the popular faculty leader has led more than 25 past Travel/Study programs. On this program, Professor Naimark will offer lectures on such topics as the rise and fall of Nazism; Cold War Europe; and the history, memory and contemporary politics of the region. 4 to Krakow Potsdam Berlin Elbe River G ERMANY Wittenberg Meissen Dresden Pillnitz P OLAND C ZECHIA Melnik Prague Itinerary SATURDAY & SUNDAY, OCTOBER 5 & 6 U.S. / PRAGUE, CZECHIA Depart the U.S. on overnight flights, arriving in Czechia on Monday and transferring to our hotel. This evening, gather for a welcome reception, followed by dinner on our own. HILTON PRAGUE MONDAY, OCTOBER 7 PRAGUE Today, begin our full two-day exploration of Prague, a treasure trove of architectural styles, ranging from Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance to art nouveau, cubist, modern and the most famous style, Prague Baroque. Visit Hradc any, the castle district, which includes Prague Castle and its St. Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St. George s Basilica and Convent, and the Golden Lane. Walk along the Royal Route, which once connected the seat of the king with the Old Town, then cross the famous Charles Bridge with its 30 statues. End the afternoon with a boat trip on the River Vltava. HILTON PRAGUE (B,L) TUESDAY, OCTOBER 8 PRAGUE Discover the fairy tale-like setting of Prague s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, during a guided walking tour. Also visit such art nouveau treasures as the Municipal House and the Alfons Mucha Museum. Visit the Jewish quarter, with its monuments commemorating the life and work of the Jewish community through the centuries. Explore the Old Jewish Cemetery and the so-called Old-New Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in Europe. This evening enjoy a typical Czech dinner at a local brewery. HILTON PRAGUE (B,L,D) WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9 PRAGUE / KARLOVY VARY Take an all-day excursion to the spa town of Karlovy Vary (or Carlsbad to the Germans), with its grand 19th-century spa architecture. Since the 14th century, the town s hot springs have attracted visitors for their curative properties, including Tsar Peter the Great. Stop at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene and the blue-andgold Orthodox Church of St. Peter and Paul, and sample the presumably health-restoring waters from spouted ceramic cups. HILTON PRAGUE (B,L) THURSDAY, OCTOBER 10 PRAGUE / MELNIK / DRESDEN, GERMANY Drive along the banks of the Elbe River and stop at Melnik Castle for a guided tour that includes lunch and wine tasting in the castle s 14th-century wine cellar. Cross the border into Germany, arriving in Dresden in the afternoon, and check in to our hotel in time for dinner. HOTEL TASCHENBERGPALAIS KEMPINSKI DRESDEN (B,L,D) FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11 DRESDEN Today, take a guided walking tour of Dresden and visit the Gallery of Old Masters, featuring major works from the Italian Renaissance, as well as Dutch and Flemish paintings. Also visit the Semperoper, the centerpiece of Dresden s historic old city, painstakingly reconstructed after being destroyed in WWII. End the day with a visit to the world-famous Historic Green Vault that houses Europe s largest collections of treasures and baroque curiosities, including the Dresden Green, the world s largest naturally green diamond. 5 WITTENBERG PILLNITZ KARLOVY VARY SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12 DRESDEN / MEISSEN / DRESDEN Travel by coach to Meissen for a guided tour of the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, Europe s first porcelain factory, established in After lunch in the picturesque city, return to Dresden for an evening at leisure, stopping on the way for wine tasting at the Wackerbarth Castle. HOTEL TASCHENBERGPALAIS KEMPINSKI DRESDEN (B,L) SUNDAY, OCTOBER 13 DRESDEN / PILLNITZ / DRESDEN Take a vintage paddlewheel steamer boat to Pillnitz, a former royal estate on the outskirts of Dresden and an impressive example of the artistic extravagance of Saxony s princeelectors during the 17th and early-18th centuries. Return to Dresden and visit the German Military History Museum, reopened in HOTEL TASCHEN- BERGPALAIS KEMPINSKI DRESDEN (B,L) MONDAY, OCTOBER 14 DRESDEN / WITTEN- BERG / BERLIN Bid farewell to Dresden this morning and continue on to the university town of Wittenberg. Visit All Saints Church, commonly known as the Castle Church, famous as the location where Martin Luther is said to have posted The 95 Theses, his list of propositions that started the Protestant Reformation. After lunch in Wittenberg, arrive in Berlin and check in to our hotel. HILTON HOTEL GENDAR- MENMARKT (B,L) TUESDAY, OCTOBER 15 BERLIN Begin today with a sightseeing tour of Berlin, including a stop at the Berlin Wall Memorial. Take a guided tour of the Reichstag building that dates back to 1894, and enjoy dazzling views of Berlin during lunch at its roof-garden restaurant, then walk up a spiral ramp to the top of the Reichstag s transparent dome. This afternoon visit the Topography of Terror, a history museum focused on the crimes of the Third Reich, housed on the site of the former Gestapo and SS headquarters and the Reich Security Main Office. HILTON HOTEL GENDARMENMARKT (B,L) WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16 BERLIN / POTSDAM / BERLIN Travel by coach to the historic city of Potsdam to tour the 18th-century baroque palace and gardens of Sans Souci, summer residence of Frederick the Great of Prussia. Later stroll through the Schloss Cecilienhof, the site where the Potsdam Agreement was signed in 1945, settling the status of Germany after World War II. En route back to Berlin, drive across the Glienicke Bridge, site of Cold War spy exchanges as depicted in the film, Bridge of Spies. HILTON HOTEL GENDARMENMARKT (B,L) THURSDAY, OCTOBER 17 BERLIN Venture out to Museum Island today an island in the heart of Berlin with five distinct museums proffering works from such epochs and schools as ancient Egypt, Byzantium, impressionism, realism and much more. Start with a guided tour in the morning and perhaps opt to stay on the island for the rest of the day for independent exploration. This evening celebrate at a farewell reception and dinner at our hotel. WHAT TO EXPECT This program is moderately strenuous and at times physically demanding and busy. Daily excursions involve one to three miles of walking and standing on city streets, in museums and on large estate grounds. In some instances, such as museums, castles and gardens, guided tours require climbing up and down several flights of stairs that may not have handrails. Some days involve early-morning starts or late nights, as we often have a full schedule of excursions, lectures and special events on any given day. Participants must be physically fit, active and in good health. We welcome travelers 15 years of age and older on this program. Optional Post-trip Extension KRAKÓW AND AUSCHWITZ, POLAND OCTOBER 18 TO 21 (3 ADDITIONAL DAYS) Fly independently to Kraków and join Professor Norman Naimark on a visit to explore sites in this historically important Polish city, including St. Mary s Basilica, the Old Synagogue, Wawel Castle and the Collegium Maius, located in Kraków s old town and dating back to the 14th century. Take a full-day excursion to Oswiecim for a guided tour of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, housed in the former German Nazi concentration and extermination camp. Details and pricing for the extension will be sent to confirmed participants.

An additional $200-perperson deposit is required to hold space for the optional post-trip extension. As a condition of participation, all confirmed participants are required to sign a Release of Liability. Cancellations & Refunds Deposits and any payments are refundable, less a $500-per-person cancellation fee, until 120 days prior to departure. After that date, refunds can be made only if the program is sold out and your place(s) can be resold, in which case a $1,000-perperson cancellation fee will apply. Insurance Stanford Travel/Study provides all travelers who are U.S. or Canadian citizens with minimal medical, accident and evacuation coverage under our group-travel insurance policy. Our group policy is intended to provide minimal levels of protection while you are traveling on this program. You may choose to subscribe to optional tripcancellation and baggage insurance. Information offering such insurance will be provided to travelers with their welcome materials. The product offered includes special benefits if you purchase your policy within 14 days of written confirmation of your participation on the trip. Eligibility We encourage membership in the Stanford Alumni Association as the program cost for nonmembers is $300 more than the members price. A person traveling as a guest paid for by a current member will not be charged the nonmember fee.
