2 The informal definition of amazing is startlingly impressive a totally apt descriptive for the surprising and breathtaking country of Argentina. I ve never failed to be impressed by its abundance of natural wonders, the vitality of its culture and traditions, and the exuberance of its people. We ll visit the colorful neighborhoods of Buenos Aires and travel to a private estancia on the pampas to watch gauchos go through their paces. We ll marvel at the majesty of massive Iguazu Falls, explore the beautiful Lake District in the foothills of Patagonia and observe the action at one of the world s only advancing glaciers. It s a journey you won t want to end. Join us! BRETT S. THOMPSON, 83, DIRECTOR, STANFORD TRAVEL/STUDY Highlights CRUISE through the iceberg-clogged waters beneath the Perito Moreno Glacier, listening as its massive wall of ice pops, crackles and perhaps calves. MEANDER along the catwalks atop the great Iguazu Falls and watch as torrents of water plummet more than 200 feet over the edge. GAZE up at the crystalclear, deep-blue Patagonian skies as an expert guide helps us search for the elusive condor. COVER: PERITO MORENO GLACIER, PATAGONIA, ARGENTINA PATAGONIA, ARGENTINA

3 Faculty Leader Dr. Mahood went WAY beyond the role of faculty leader. She had a pleasant and enthusiastic demeanor for whatever we were doing, while providing considerable expertise on a lot more than geology. JOHN HARRIS JR., 70, MONGOLIA SUITCASE SEMINAR, 2011 After taking her first geology course, Professor G A I L MAHOOD fell in love with the reasoning involved and the excuse it provided to get dirty, and went on to complete a BA and PhD in the subject. She joined the faculty at Stanford in 1979, where she has taught courses in introductory geology as well as in her specialties of volcanology, igneous petrology and geoarchaeology. Her favorite teaching experiences involve teaching in the field, including an intensive two-week summer class in Stanford s Sophomore College on geologic hazards of California that involves a field trip to Mount Lassen volcano. Professor Mahood and her graduate students study the eruptive histories of volcanoes in the U.S. that have given rise to large, explosive eruptions that spread ash continent-wide. In addition to her teaching, she has held many administrative roles at Stanford and has led four Travel/Study adventures to date. I ve come in contact with brilliant, interesting people who have enriched my life and whom I otherwise would not have met, says Professor Mahood, speaking of her Travel/Study trips. During our time in Argentina, Professor Mahood will lecture on how glaciation past and present produces the landscapes of the southern Andes and on active volcanoes of the Andes, including how recent explosive eruptions have affected the areas we will visit. After lunch, cruise around Lake Argentino and up to Icebergs Channel to view Perito Moreno Glacier s massive wall of actively transforming ice. Return to shore and transfer back to our hotel. 5 n a AL LAKE NAHUEL HUAPI, ARGENTINA FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12 EL CALAFATE / SAN CARLOS DE BARILOCHE Enjoy the morning at leisure before our flight to San Carlos de Bariloche (Bariloche). Set in Nahuel Huapi National Park, this area is commonly referred to as the Lake District and attracts active adventurers with its open fields, walking trails and placid waterways. Upon arrival, transfer to the Llao Llao Hotel, our home for the next three nights. LLAO LLAO HOTEL (B,D) SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13 SAN CARLOS DE BARILOCHE Today, visit Victoria Island, an island on the lake populated by centennial cypresses and alpine beech trees. Our two-hour, non-technical walk across the island leads us to an al fresco lunch at the water s edge. This afternoon, explore the rest of Victoria Island. LLAO LLAO HOTEL (B,L) SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14 SAN CARLOS DE BARILOCHE This morning, drive 90 minutes to Estancia Valle Encantado. This enchanting valley provides the opportunity to take a hike in search of condor nests and condors. Return to the estancia for a classic Patagonian barbecue. LLAO LLAO HOTEL (B,L,D) MONDAY, OCTOBER 15 SAN CARLOS DE BARILOCHE / IGUAZU Depart on a mid-morning flight to the Great Waters of Iguazu. With 275 waterfalls pummeling the rocks below with 6,000 cubic feet of water per second, the Iguazu Falls are a sight to behold. The Argentine Iguazu National Park is home to 2,000 identified plant, mammal and reptile species. Spend the next two days exploring the forests and waterfalls of the area while enjoying the comforts of our resort hotel. BELMOND HOTEL DAS CATARATAS (B,D) TUESDAY, OCTOBER 16 IGUAZU This morning, explore Iguazu s upper falls area. View some of the more spectacular falls such as the Hermanas, Chico and Mbigua Falls. Hop aboard the park tram and arrive at the Devil s Throat catwalk. A narrow, curved chasm with a drop of 269 feet, the Devil s Throat accounts for more than half of the water that flows through the falls. Enjoy a stroll along the catwalk, snapping photos of Devil s Throat. Next head for the Lower Circuit for a onemile walk through the forest, where we listen and look for local birds. Travel by Zodiac to Devil s Throat Canyon for an intimate view of the falls as the mist saturates the air and the roar drowns out all ambient noise. Return to our hotel for an evening at leisure.
