CARLTON SEXTON, 7 4, O P U S MEDITERRANEO, 2015 Stanford Faculty Leader BERT PATENAUDE, MA 79, PHD 87, is a lecturer in history and international relations at Stanford University. Bert's wide-ranging Stanford credentials include assisting Stanford alumnus and former Sunset magazine publisher L. W. Bill Lane, Jr., complete his memoir, The Sun Never Sets: Reflections on a Western Life (Stanford University Press, 2013). Bert s previous book, Trotsky: Downfall of a Revolutionary (HarperCollins, 2009), was serialized for radio by the BBC. His first book, The Big Show in Bololand: The American Relief Expedition to Soviet Russia in the Famine of 1921 (Stanford University Press, 2002), won the 2003 Marshall Shulman Book Prize and was made into a documentary film and broadcast in 2011 as part of the award-winning PBS history series, American Experience. Bert has traveled extensively with Stanford, most recently as faculty leader for the Dutch Waterways program in Some of the topics he will discuss with us during this program include the Hanseatic League, Flanders in a divided Belgium, the Kiel Canal and the rise of modern Germany, the role of Zeppelins in the First World War, and the contemporary political sea change underway in Scandinavia and the Netherlands. Settle in and join fellow travelers for a welcome cocktail reception at the hotel. HOTEL PHOENIX WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 29 COPENHAGEN / EMBARK Explore Denmark s capital, Copenhagen, including a visit to Rosenborg Castle, built during the Renaissance as a summer retreat for the royal family and now home to the Royal Collections, such as the crown jewels. View the renowned collections of ancient and modern art at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek before returning to our hotel. After an independent lunch and a bit of time at leisure, embark the luxury vessel and designated-clean Ship, Le Lapérouse, our deluxe home for the duration of the trip. Take a walking tour of its well-preserved old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and note the fruits of the wealth generated by its monopoly on commerce. LE LAPÉROUSE (B,L,D) FRIDAY, AUGUST 31 KIEL / KIEL CANAL This morning we explore Kiel s Schifffahrtsmuseum (or maritime museum), a well-conceived and -executed museum that introduces visitors to Kiel s maritime pursuits shipbuilding, trade, a naval base and sailing that have been the city s lifeblood throughout its history. Spend the afternoon navigating the 61-milelong Kiel Canal, which cuts across the Jutland Peninsula and connects the Baltic Sea to the North Sea. LE LAPÉROUSE (B,L,D) SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 1 HARLINGEN, NETHERLANDS / LEEUWARDEN / HARLINGEN Arrive in the Dutch port of Harlingen, and this afternoon venture on an excursion to Leeuwarden, the capital and largest city in Friesland. Explore the Fries Museum, which focuses on the history and culture of the region, including a room dedicated to the distinctive folk art of Hindeloopen painting, Leeuwarden Copenhagen D ENMARK Kiel Kiel Canal G ERMANY as well as one dedicated to Leeuwarden s most infamous citizen, Mata Hari. LE LAPÉROUSE (B,L,D) SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 2 AMSTERDAM Start the day cruising along Amsterdam s city canals in small boats to gain a sense of the architecture of this center of 18th-century commerce and to get a glimpse of its neighborhoods. Next, visit the incomparable Rijksmuseum, home to the world s greatest collection of Dutch Masters. After lunch aboard ship, take the afternoon to explore Amsterdam independently. LE LAPÉROUSE (B,L,D) MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 3 ANTWERP, BELGIUM Tour the historic city of Antwerp this morning, including Grote Markt (or Great Market Square), the Town Hall, the guild houses that were the driving force behind Antwerp s economic dominance of the 17th century, Brabo Fountain and Vlaeykensgang, a typical medieval alley. Also visit Antwerp s Cathedral of Our Lady, which contains some of Rubens greatest paintings, including Elevation of the Cross and Descent from the Cross. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure before our Lübeck HINDELOOPEN PAINTIN ship sails in the early evening. LE LAPÉROUSE (B,L,D) TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4 OSTEND / BRUGES OR DUNKIRK, FRANCE Embark from Ostend on an excursion to Bruges, a perfectly preserved medieval town known for its canals, magnificent architecture and exquisite art. Walk through narrow cobblestone streets to the marketplace, Belfry Tower, Town Hall and the Chapel of the Holy Blood. Visit the Groeningemuseum, famous for its collection of paintings by Flemish Primitives, and see the Church of Our Lady, home to Michelangelo s sculpture, Madonna and Child. Alternatively, choose to visit Dunkirk, an important harbor in WWII. While there, visit the

WHAT TO EXPECT We consider this to be a moderately strenuous program that is at times physically demanding and busy. Daily programs involve up to three miles of walking, for instance, walking from bus drop-off points outside cities to their medieval city centers, as well as having to stand for extended periods in museums and on tours. Participants will encounter uneven terrain and cobblestoned paths, and walkways at sites can be rocky and uneven. Stairs at sites may not have handrails, and many sites do not have elevators. Shade may not always be available and seating at sites is limited. Participants must be physically fit, active and in good health. We welcome travelers 15 years of age and older on this program. Deposit & Final Payment A $1,000-per-person deposit is required to hold space for the this program. A $200-per-person deposit is required to hold space for the optional post-trip extension. Insurance Stanford Travel/Study provides all travelers who are U.S. or Canadian citizens with minimal medical, accident and evacuation coverage under our group-travel insurance policy.
