It is indeed a remarkable destination with friendly people, a fascinating history and a vibrant culture redolently reflected in the food, music and art that make up daily life there. Our intent with this program is to give travelers a well-rounded introduction to the region, including tourist highlights, as well as a full program of interactions with local people. Sunday, March 16 HOME / MIAMI, FLORIDA, U.S. Arrive in Miami independently and check in to our hotel just minutes from the Miami airport. CROWNE PLAZA HOTEL MIAMI AIRPORT Monday, March 17 MIAMI /, CUBA Transfer to the Miami Airport for our one-hour charter flight to Havana. Check in to our hotel, ideally located in central Havana. Dinner this evening is at L Atelier, one of Havana s best paladars (private restaurants). HOTEL PARQUE CENTRAL (B,L,D) Tuesday, March 18 Embark on a morning walking tour led by architect Maria Elena Martin, including the Bacardi Building, erected in 1930 and one of Cuba s most impressive examples of art deco architecture. After lunch enjoy a guided tour of the Museum of Cuban Art with curator Nelson Herrera. Later attend an interactive talk on Cuban music by Professors Faya and Córdova. HOTEL PARQUE CENTRAL (B,L,D) Wednesday, March 19 This morning visit the United States Interests Section, which functions as a de facto embassy and represents U.S. interests in Cuba. Meet artist Yamilis Brito and his students at the Taller de Gráfica Experimental. After lunch at a paladar, visit the Taller de La Habana and meet with the architects and restorers responsible for the restoration of important city landmarks. End our day at Havana s oldest square, the 16th-century Plaza Vieja. HOTEL PARQUE CENTRAL (B,L) Thursday, March 20 Visit Parque Trillo with guide Elias Asefi, who explains to us the role of African religion and culture in Cuba. A highlight today is our meeting and discussion with the students at an English class during our visit to the University of Havana. This evening, attend the popular nightly cannon ceremony at La Cabana Fortress. HOTEL PARQUE CENTRAL (B,L,D) Friday, March 21 / BAY OF PIGS / CIENFUEGOS Depart this morning for Cienfuegos by way of the infamous Bay of Pigs. Visit the Playa Girón Museum, which displays artifacts from the failed U.S.- based invasion of Cuba. Meet architect and conservationist Iran Millan in Cienfuegos for a walk through the neoclassical town s main square, Paseo del Prado, and the Terry Thomas Theater. Enjoy a musical performance by the Cantores de Cienfuegos. JAGUA HOTEL (B,L,D) Saturday, March 22 CIENFUEGOS / TRINIDAD Today travel to Trinidad via the Valley of the Sugar Mills, the most important sugar-producing region during colonial times and now a UNESCO Cultural Heritage site. Tour several

4 aracoa Ministry of the Interior building, Revolution Square, Havana museums and the studio of local artist Yami Martinez. Return to Cienfuegos for dinner this evening at a nearby paladar. JAGUA HOTEL (B,L,D) Sunday, March 23 CIENFUEGOS / SANTIAGO de cuba This morning fly to Santiago de Cuba. Take an orientation tour along the Avenida de los Libertadores to Revolution Square, and then to San Juan Hill, site of the final battle of the Spanish-American War of 1898, made famous by Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Attend a cultural performance at the Taller Cultural Luis Guias Oduardo, a center for artists and writers. Dinner and a private performance by an African-Cuban-Caribbean dance company top the evening. HOTEL MELIA SANTIAGO (B,L,D) Monday, March 24 SANTIAGO de cuba Our day begins with a visit to the city s Historical Center, where local experts teach us about the preservation and conservation of the city s patrimony. After lunch at El Morro Restaurant, visit the 17th- century El Morro Fortress, which has served both as a fortress and a prison. Dine this evening at a paladar. HOTEL MELIA SANTIAGO (B,L,D) Tuesday, March 25 SANTIAGO de cuba / BARACOA Travel by motorcoach to the town of Baracoa at the northeastern end of the island of Cuba. Upon arrival, we lunch at the Finca Duaba, where we learn from local farmers about the production of cocoa and sample Cuban hot chocolate. This evening, after dinner at Paladar Don Pedro, enjoy a music-and-dance performance by Bara Rumba, an Afro-Cuban folkloric percussionist danceand-song troupe. HOTEL PORTO SANTO (B,L,D) Wednesday, March 26 BARACOA This morning attend a performance of dances typical of the countryside of Baracoa. After lunch, meet the young artists at Proyecto Alabey, then visit a children s community center to attend a choir performance, view the children s artwork and converse with them. HOTEL PORTO SANTO (B,L,D) Thursday, March 27 BARACOA / Transfer to the airport for our morning flight to Havana. Upon arrival, drive to the home of artist José Fuster for lunch in the fishing town of Jaimanitas. Fuster has decorated over 80 of the town s houses with colorful ornate murals and domes, transforming Jaimanitas into a vast work of public art. HOTEL PARQUE CENTRAL (B,L) Friday, March 28 This morning visit the Organoponico de Alamar, an agricultural cooperative located in a rural neighborhood. Later we visit Finca Vigia, the former home of Ernest Hemingway near Havana. This evening dine at La Guarida, a paladar and the setting for the film, Strawberry and Chocolate. Our host, owner Enrique Nuñez, talks with us about the challenges of running a private restaurant in Cuba. There are better amenities for tourists, such as more taxicabs and restaurants, etc. Having said this, we ask you to keep in mind that traveling to Cuba is still an adventure. Because of Cuba s inconsistent infrastructure, we consider this program to be a moderately strenuous program that is at times physically demanding and busy. Cuba s tourism industry is developing, and patience with local service standards will greatly improve one s enjoyment of the trip. We expect that participants will be a selfselecting group whose interest in the places we visit far outweighs the need for creature comforts. In many ways, the challenges of this program are part of the learning experience. We welcome travelers 15 years of age and older on this program.

6 Emilio Bacardi museum, Santiago de Cuba Terms & Conditions Deposit & Final Payment A $1,000 per-person deposit is required to hold your space on this program. Complete and return the attached reservation form or sign up online. Final payment is due 120 days prior to departure. As a condition of participation, all confirmed participants are required to sign a Release of Liability. Cancellations & Refunds Deposits and any payments are refundable, less a $500-per-person cancellation fee, until 120 days prior to departure. After that date, refunds can be made only if the program is sold out and your place(s) can be resold, in which case a $1,000-perperson cancellation fee will apply. We recommend trip-cancellation insurance; applications will be sent to you. Insurance Stanford Travel/Study provides all travelers who are U.S. or Canadian citizens with minimal medical, accident and evacuation coverage under our group-travel insurance policy. Our group policy is intended to provide minimal levels of protection while you are traveling on this program. We strongly recommend that you subscribe to optional baggage and trip-cancellation insurance. A brochure offering such insurance will be mailed with your confirmation about one week after we receive your deposit. The product offered in this brochure includes special benefits if you postmark your insurance payment within a specified window: 15 days of the date listed on the confirmation letter for the Waiver of Pre-existing Conditions and coverage for Financial Insolvency; 21 days for the Cancel for Any Reason benefit. Eligibility We encourage membership in the Alumni Association as the program cost for nonmembers is $200 more than the members price. Parents and their children under 21 may travel on one membership. 7 Faculty Leader I never expected to be so enthralled by the lectures. Norman was not only a great speaker and teacher but he was also readily available for questions. Katherine DeWilde, MBA 75, Dalmatian Coast College, 2009 NORMAN NAIMARK, 66, MA 68, PhD 72, former director of Stanford s Bing Overseas Studies and currently director of Stanford s Division of International, Comparative and Area studies, has been studying the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, as well as the history of communism and radicalism for 40 years. His research focus has been in the fields of international history and the history of the Cold War, with a special interest in the Cuban Missile Crisis. Professor Naimark is widely recognized by students and colleagues for his warmth, wit and dedication to the Stanford community. A veteran faculty leader on more than 20 past Travel/Study programs, he and his wife, history professor Katherine Jolluck, have traveled extensively and are excited to share with us their understanding of socialist societies in the Cuban environment.
