2 We often use romantic to describe our Classic Journeys, and it especially captures the essence of this trip. Medieval towns and Romanesque cathedrals frame our journey on this 10-night cruise aboard the all-suite Corinthian. The itinerary goes beyond romantic, however, showcasing a rapidly transforming new Europe. Visit cities humming with newfound vitality as we traverse six European nations from the Kiel Canal to the canals of Amsterdam to the Seine River. 3 Faculty Leader Bob Hamrdla s enthusiasm was catching and his knowledge was special. G. ROBERT HAMRDLA, 59, MA 64, has been teaching at Stanford for nearly 40 years, most recently in the Continuing Studies Program. He is also a former assistant to the president of Stanford and secretary to the board of trustees. Fluent in German and a specialist on Central Europe and Nazi Germany as well as the former German Democratic Republic, he has introduced thousands of Stanford students and alumni to Central and Eastern European history and has visited these areas virtually every year for the past 55 years. During our program he will discuss such topics as the European Union, the relationship between France and Germany, and the enormously important issue of immigration into and between member countries of the E.U. 4 U NITED K INGDOM Itinerary North Sea Canterbury Dover English Channel SATURDAY & SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 5 & 6 U.S. / COPENHAGEN, DENMARK Depart the U.S. on overnight flights to Copenhagen. Upon arrival on Sunday, transfer to our hotel. This evening, enjoy a welcome reception and cocktail cruise through the harbor and up the canals of Copenhagen. COPENHAGEN MARRIOTT HOTEL MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 7 COPENHAGEN / EMBARK Today enjoy a city tour that includes stops at the Amalienborg Palace, home of the royal family; the Little Mermaid, the famous symbol of Copenhagen; and Christiansborg Palace, home of the Danish Parliament. This afternoon transfer to the port and embark our ship. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8 KIEL CANAL, GERMANY Spend the day navigating the 61-mile-long Kiel Canal, which cuts across the Jutland Peninsula and connects the Baltic Sea to the North Sea. THE NETHERLANDS Rouen Giverny Harlingen Leeuwarden Amsterdam The Hague Ostend Rotterdam Antwerp Ghent Bruges Seine Paris WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9 HARLINGEN, THE NETHERLANDS / LEEUWARDEN This morning explore the old Frisian harbor town of Harlingen whose center is a protected collection of 16th- to 18th-century homes. Continue to nearby Leeuwarden, former capital of the Frisian stadholders, for a visit to the Fries Museum. Housed in one of the city s finest homes, it showcases Frisian history, culture and contemporary art. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 AMSTERDAM Known for its picturesque canals, Amsterdam is one of the great capitals of Europe and home to a wealth of museums. Our tour includes the famed Rijksmuseum with its unrivalled collection of Dutch Masters. Afternoon options include a visit to the van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank House, or time on our own to explore this walking-friendly city. CORINTHIAN (B,L,D) BELGIUM FRANCE FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11 ROTTERDAM / THE HAGUE Our tour of Rotterdam includes the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, one of the leading art collections in the Netherlands. Copenhagen D ENMARK Kiel Canal G ERMANY In the afternoon visit The Hague, the Netherlands administrative capital. This city of wide, tree-lined avenues hosts the Mauritshuis, a Palladian-style mansion housing one of Europe s finest collections of paintings, with examples of the greatest 17th-century artists including Vermeer and Rembrandt. Also visit the International Criminal Court and Peace Palace to learn about the history of the palace, its institutions and buildings. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 ANTWERP, BELGIUM Tour the historic city of Antwerp this morning, including the Rubens House, where the baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens lived most of his life and which displays a number of his works. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure, or choose to visit the Plantin-Moretus Museum or the Mayer van den Bergh Museum. SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13 ANTWERP / GHENT Today tour the quaint town of Ghent, including the magnificent Saint Bavo Cathedral. There will be time to explore the medieval quarters of the city on our own. SWEDEN Baltic Sea CZECH REPUBLIC MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 14 OSTEND / BRUGES OR DUNKIRK The Corinthian docks today in Ostend. Enjoy an excursion to Bruges, a perfectly preserved medieval town with one of the finest art collections in Belgium, including a sculpture by Michelangelo displayed in the Church of Our Lady. Alternatively, join Professor Hamrdla on a visit to Dunkirk, an important harbor during WWII. Visit the Operation Dynamo War Museum, which chronicles the amazing seaborne movement that transported many thousands of Allied troops to safety in Britain in GIVERNY, FRANCE TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15 DOVER, UNITED KINGDOM / CANTERBURY From Dover, take a short drive to Canterbury for a visit to its awe-inspiring cathedral, begun in the 11th century; the cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, spiritual head of the Church of England and the Anglican Communion. Enjoy time at leisure to explore this medieval city.

5 VINCENT VAN GOGH MURAL, THE NETHERLANDS WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 ROUEN, FRANCE / GIVERNY Sail up the Seine in the early morning. Arrive in Rouen, the ancient capital of the Duchy of Normandy, for a tour of this historic city, stopping at the Vieux Marché, the cathedral and St. Ouen Abbey. In honor of the 100th anniversary of WWI, Professor Hamrdla will also take those interested to visit the British Cemetery. Enjoy a ride through the Norman countryside on our way to Giverny, impressionist painter Claude Monet s home for more than 40 years, for a visit to the house and gardens. Enjoy a farewell reception with fellow travelers before dinner this evening. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 ROUEN / DISEMBARK / PARIS / U.S. Disembark and transfer to Paris for return flights to the U.S. Or, join the optional post-trip extension in Normandy. (B) Post-trip Normandy Extension SEPTEMBER 17 TO 20 Continue our journey with a four-day extension to Normandy, site of some of the most decisive and fiercely contested battles of WWII. Faculty leader Bob Hamrdla provides a full educational program of lectures during this extension, highlights of which include visits to the D-Day beaches and the deeply moving Peace Memorial and American Cemetery. Fuel Costs In the uncertain, often volatile oil market of late, it is difficult to predict fuel costs over the long term and, more specifically, at the time of operation of this voyage. Our prices are based upon the prevailing fuel rates at the time of brochure printing. While we will do everything possible to maintain our prices, if the fuel rates increase significantly, it may be necessary to institute a fuel surcharge. What To Expect We consider this to be a moderately strenuous program that is at times physically demanding and busy. Daily programs involve up to three miles of walking, from bus drop-off points near medieval sites through city centers, in museums and on city tours, as well as extended periods of standing in museums and on tours. Participants will encounter uneven terrain, including hills and some dirt and cobblestoned paths, and walkways at sites can be rocky and uneven. Stairs at sites may not have handrails, and many sites do not have elevators. Shade may not always be available and seating at sites is limited. Participants must be physically fit, active and in good health. We welcome travelers 15 years of age and older on this program. Terms & Conditions Deposit & Final Payment A $1,000 deposit is required to hold space for this program. A $200-perperson deposit is required to hold space for the optional post-trip extension. Complete and return the attached reservation form or sign up online. Final payment is due 120 days prior to departure. As a condition of participation, all confirmed participants are required to sign a Release of Liability. Cancellations & Refunds Deposits and any payments are refundable, less a $500-perperson cancellation fee, until 120 days prior to departure. After that date, refunds can be made only if the program is sold out and your place(s) can be resold, in which case a $1,000-per-person cancellation fee will apply. We recommend trip-cancellation insurance; applications will be sent to you. Insurance Stanford Travel/Study provides all travelers who are U.S. or Canadian citizens with minimal medical, accident and evacuation coverage under our group-travel insurance policy. Our group policy is intended to provide minimal levels of protection while you are traveling on this program. We strongly recommend that you subscribe to optional baggage and trip-cancellation insurance. A brochure offering such insurance will be mailed with your confirmation materials. The product offered in this brochure includes special benefits if you postmark your insurance payment within a specified window: 21 days of the date listed on the confirmation letter for the Early Purchase provisions. No refund will be made for an unused portion of any tour unless arrangements are made in sufficient time to avoid penalties. Baggage is carried at the owner s risk entirely. It is understood that the ship s ticket, when issued, shall constitute the sole contract between the passenger and the cruise company. The airlines concerned are not to be held responsible for any act, omission or event during the time passengers are not onboard their plane or conveyance.
