2 President s Message Ya gotta hand it to those early automoblists. They braved severe weather and road conditions - in open cars. Well, they have nothing on us. Last Saturday several of our intrepid Model T ers drove through the back country mountains in rain, fog, wind and cold to tour to Julian. The scenery was beautiful (when one could see it through the fog) and the company was (as always) great and we got to see two old tour buses on display in Julian. But, now as Paul Harvey would say, here s the rest of the story. Not all of our T ers are intrepid. Yours truly leads that pack. Cathy and I trailered our car to the meeting point hoping the weather would clear. When it didn t we kept the T in the trailer and drove the tour in the truck towing the car - with the wipers on - the heater on - and the windows rolled up. Ahhhhh! No wind-chill factor for us. I know I ll never live this down, but at the time I didn t care. Cold hurts. A couple of others drove modern too. Tours are fun. If your car is not on the road come in a modern or hitch a ride with someone else or drive trouble truck. There s always room. Sunshine Report Marie Judd Celebration of Life will be on May 15, 3-7 pm, Rec Hall, behind the Holy Spirit Church, th St., San Diego CA Food and non-alcoholic drinks will be served. Hope you can make it. NOTE: THE FAMILY HAS ASKED ME TO HAVE YOU RSVP TO ME, CLAIRE COOKE AT mommeo4@cox.net or if you are coming, so that they can determine the amount of food needed for the event. Remember to call me at or me at judynjohn@burrellteam.com when something happens, so I can send out cards or call. We care about all our members in the San Diego Model T Club. 4 June 6 - Alpine Tour A tour from the Histerical Auto Works (9510 Pathway St., Santee) to The Alpine Historical Society s Museum (2116 Tavern Rd., Alpine) is planned for June 6, There will be a western show and a chuck wagon lunch and this museum is well worth seeing. The Historical society would like some Model Ts on display, and you can either join the tour at the Histerical Auto Works or drive your T directly to the museum. Cars must be at the museum by 10:30 AM and need to be in place before the rush of people as activities will start at 11:00. Because there is no room to park trailers at the museum, plesae park them elsewhere and drive only your T to the museum. The only charge will be for the chuck wagon lunch although donations to the Alpine Historical Society are very welcome. Contact for this tour is Norm Kling ( ) who will be at the museum on the 7th and not on the tour. 4th of July Parades, Etc. Our club receives invitations to participate in parades, shows and other activities for fourth of July celebrations around San Diego. To date, we have received an inviataion to the best parade of them all. Hopefully, more will come during the next month. Coronado 4th of July Parade This is a great parade with the whole town of Coronado turning out. We ve participated in this parade for the past eight years and have made application to the parade committee. There will be more detailed information in the next two issues as to where to meet, time, etc. We are limited to only 10 vehicles, so make sure you get your reservation in to Chuck West, , without delay. 6 Winter Tour to Julian Tony Bowker Pictures courtesy of Stephanie Terrell and Karen Pepe This was a joint tour between the Hidden Valley and the San Diego clubs, Stephanie for HV and Norm Kling for the SD club. The HV club met at the Arts Center with three Ts belonging to John & Karen Pepe, Dale & Eleanor Stanfield and Vie and Stephanie in their Model A. Ken & Merleen, Craig & Barbara were in modems and Mac & Diane with the trouble truck and trailer. The SD guys met at the Descanso/I-8 junction with Norm & Delores, Tony & Kyle Lemler and Kirby Prey with a friend, all in Model Ts. Gerry and Ana Yeadon were there in a modem, but drove Kirby s truck with the Trouble Truck. Greg & Cathy were there with their truck, trailer and Touring but they decided to stay in the truck and Sam & Deborah Judd decided lunch in Julian sounded good but sensibly drove their modem. 6

7 So the stage was set, the only item not on schedule was the weather, it was horrid... It was foggy, cold and almost constant rain. During the run over the sunrise highway, often I couldn t see the T in front of me and we were cold. We stopped at Laguna Lodge for a quick break, it was cold. Kyle and I stopped at several of the view points, but all we saw was rain and fog and it was cold... We arrived in Julian and a few minutes later the group arrived from Escondido and we all went into the vehicle museum for a tour around the Mack and Cadillac stage buses that use to run between Julian and San Diego. Both these unique vehicles were restored by members of the Truck Museum in Campo with funding provided by the Julian Historical Society. They are very unique vehicles and most beautifully restored. Restored San Diego to Julian buses in museum Following the Museum Tour, we all walked over to Rongbranch Restaurant for a excellent lunch. When we left the restaurant, the rain had eased a little, so we broke into the north and south parties and headed home. In spite of the weather, which was beyond our control. It was an excellent days drive, the Pepe s drove all the way from Temecula in their Fordor sedan. After lunch, Greg thanked Norm and Stephanie for all the effort they put into organizing the days events, it was great fun in spite of the inclement weather Blast from the Past May 1985, 30 years ago in the club s early years, dues were $10 and the general meeting was held in the Firehouse Museum downtown. The first tour of the year had 60 people and 20 model T s. John Holthaus was president, so was Ronald Reagan. Two notes I found in the newsletter, first, Congratulations to Jack Chidgey for being awarded the Rosenthal Award, and second, Carolyn Bowker (Tony and Heather s daughter) was first runner up in Miss Ramona contest. Look for more Historical info at General meeting. Kirt Simpson - Historian (Editor s Note: From time to time, we will see more of what happened yesterday in out club as our new Historian delves into past issues of the Ruckstell Review) 7
