Volume 33 - Number 3 Established 1983 March 2015 General Meeting - March 11 The first General Meeting of 2015 will be held on March 11th at the San Diego Automotive Museum.

You should be there to pick up your latest 2015 Membership Roster (if they re ready) and we hope to meet some new families to our club.

However, there are several who haven t and as you know, if we didn t hear from you before the Big-3 Swap Meet, you will not find your name and membership data listed in the 2015 Membership Roster.

We won t find anyone deliquent until after the Big-3 Swap meet at the end of February, but as we attempt to distribute rosters at this event, you won t find your name listed if you wait until then.

The club holds a dinner meeting on the second Wednesday in odd numbered months and tours during even numbered months.

1 Volume 33 - Number 3 Established 1983 March 2015 General Meeting - March 11 The first General Meeting of 2015 will be held on March 11th at the San Diego Automotive Museum. As you know, we begin each meeting at 6:00 pm with a catered dinner from the Barbeque Pit and the cost is a very reasonable $ Come to meet a special sosmeone from the 1920 s. The Ruckstell Review is the monthly publication of the Model T Ford Club of San Diego. Annual dues are $20. The club is a Chapter of the Model T Ford Club of America, P.O. Box 126, Centerville, IN Membership information for the 'National' can again be obtained from any officer. The main publication of the MTFCA is the Vintage Ford, which alone is well worth the national dues of $40 per year. Lifetime memberships are also available. 2 President s Message This year has started off well. After a great banquet in January we took a trip to Joshua Tree National Park. The weather was perfect, the company and turn-out was good and most cars ran well. Mine broke down in the park, but with the professional help of Tony and others we discovered how vital the smallest part can be. A timer spring is half the size of the one in your ball-point pen, but when it breaks your car does not run. Neither did mine. Fortunately, Tony had a spare and we were back in business. I don t like breakdowns, but it s kind of satisfying when you can fix it quickly on the side of the road. That s American ingenuity for you. If you must miss one meeting this year be sure it s not March. We are in for some unique entertainment. Usually we are the ones giving history lessons about the cars and assembly lines and such, but now we get the lesson in the form of one of our members playing the role of a 1920 s American citizen. He will stay in character and tell us all about his time. Sounds like fun! Come, join us and keep those T s rolling Sunshine Report We are saddened to hear that long time member, San Longanecker, passed away last year. We re sorry to hear that Doug Fine suffered a broken hip earlier this year. He is progressing well, but is still not driving (especially the three pedal type vehicles). We wish him well and look forward to having him back with us soon. One of our long-time members, Art Bishop, suffered a stroke a few weeks ago and is now recovering in a rehab facility, looking forward to getting back home. Our hopes and prayers are for a full recovery and we look to the time he is again back in shape to enjoy the life he was accustomed to. 3 Ruckstell Review March 2015 Minutes of the Board Meeting - February 11, 2015 Held at Coco s Restaurant, La Mesa Attendees: Greg & Cathy Rising, Eric Sayers, John Chapman, Janna Laughon, Chuck West, Tony & Heather Bowker, Norm & Delores Kling, Kirby Pray, Mac Macphearson Start Time: 7:07 PM Greg opened the meeting REPORTS: Old Business: Banquet Lots of positive feedback about the food and location. We ll probably go back next year. Question Can anything be done to increase revenue from the November auction? New Business: President: Greg shared the Ford Trimotor at Gillespie February 26-March 1 from the Model A Club. He will check to see if they d like Model T s included (the Trimotor was introduced in 1926) Treaurer: Tony reports we have money to conduct club business. The bank wants us to consider a credit card payment system. Is this something we want to do? Member at Large: John has nothing to report from the car council at this time. Tour Chairman: Norm reported the following: April TBA June Possible Alpine History Day Tour Future Tour Ideas: Lion, Tigers, and Bears; Behind the scene tour of the Old Globe Theatre, Point Loma Race Track. Please submit ideas to Norm about future tours. Editor: Chuck reported: As of February 11, 2015, we have 26 Delinquent Members. Tony, Greg, Norm, Eric, and Chuck will call those members with a friendly reminder. We have an invite for Feb 21, from the BLM and United Desert Gateway to the Plank Road Historic Site (10:00 AM 12:00 PM) Grays Well Road off of I-8. (Ed. 4 Dirt Roads By Paul Harvey What s mainly wrong with society today is that too many dirt roads have been paved. There s not a problem today, drugs, education, divorce, delinquency that wouldn t be remedied, if we just had more dirt roads because dirt roads give character. People that live at the end of dirt roads learn early on that life is a bumpy ride. That it can jar you right down to your teeth sometimes, but it s worth it, if at the end is home-a loving spouse, happy kids and a dog. We wouldn t have near the trouble with our educational system if our kids got their ex-ercise walking a dirt road with other kids, from whom they learn how to get along. There was less crime in our streets before they were paved. Criminals didn t walk two dusty miles to rob or rape, if they new they d be welcomed by 5 barking dogs and a double barrel shotgun. And their were no drive by shootings. Our values were better when our roads were worse! People did not worship their cars more than their kids, and motorists were more courteous, they didn t tailgate by riding the bumper or the guy in front would choke you with dust and bust your windshield with rocks.dirt roads taught patience. Dirt roads were environmentally friendly, you didn t hop in your car for a quart of milk, you walked to the barn for your milk. For your mail, you walked to the mail box. What if it rained and the dirt road got washed out? That was the best part, then you stayed home and had some family time, roasted marshmallows and popped popcorn and pony rode on daddy s shoul-ders and learned how to make prettier quilts than anybody. At the end of dirt roads, you soon learned that bad words tasted like soap. Most paved roads lead to trouble, dirt roads more likely lead to a fishing creek or a swimming hole. At the end of a dirt toad, the only time we even locked _ our cars was in August, because if we didn t some neighbor would fill it with zucchini. At the end of a dirt road there was always extra springtime income, from when the city dudes would get stuck, you d have to hitch up a team and pull them out. Usually you got a dollar... you always got anew friend... at the end of a dirt road! Editor s questions for the younger generation: Who is Paul Harvey? Note: We may be in the need of a trouble truck June Tour - Alpine History Day Date: Time: Saturday, June 6 (D Day) TBA This will be a repeat of last year s Alpine History Day Tour and we will most likely be meeting at the Histerical Auto Works in Santee at around 9:00 AM. The Historical Day in Alpine is a yearly event and there is plenty to see at the Western Show. Also, a chuck wagon lunch is available for those who want to eat at the event.
