2 Minutes for HVMTC General Meeting November 5, 2014 Meeting opened at 7:02 pm by President Doug Lested Members attending included John & Karen Pepe, Tony Bowker, Vic & Stephanie Terrell, Virgil & Sharon White, Doug Lested, John & Jane Alling, Dale & Eleanor Stanfield, Phil Ewing, Merleen & Ken Magers, Mac & Diane McPherson, Ann Tunnell and Craig & Barbara French. Phil lead the pledge. Doug welcomed everyone. Diane reported we had no expenses or income during the month. Mac spoke about his trip to Hershey, with stops in Santa Fe, Indiana with truck problems, Hershey and Joshua Tree Tony spoke about the Speedster Run out of Temecula, the BBQ at the Pepe's and climbing Mt Palomar. Stephanie spoke about the recent tour to Alta Vista Gardens. Then Stephanie spoke about the upcoming tours: Saturday 15 November - Tour to Point Loma Open House and the San Salvador, meet in Mission Bay Park North of the Visitor Center at 9am, leave at 9:30am. Saturday 6 December - Tour to Taylor Guitar Works in El Cajon, joint tour with Palomar Model A's. Doug will contact the Ray Galdi to get more details. Saturday 20 December - Xmas Lights Tour with prior dinner in Escondido. Meet at Marie Callenders at 5 pm and leave about 6:30. Don't forget to light up the T. Weekend tour to Joshua Tree, either as a weekend only (7/8 Feb) or a drive there and back (5/10 Feb). Five cars have indicated they will drive to the Park and three more cars will join us there. There will be a couple of Model T's joining us from the San Diego club. It appears there will be a trouble truck for the whole route. Details later in this newsletter. Tony asked if there were any comments on the October minutes. Approval of the minutes was unanimously approved. There were two Opportunity drawings, John Alling picked up $30 and Phil picked up the gas dipstick.. Being no further business, Doug closed the meeting at 8:03 pm. Doug's T has been repaired but he was confident enough to use it, so he was on the Harley and Tony was volunteered to lead, much to Heather's annoyance... Mac lead the drivers meeting outlining the route and the plans for the day, including lunch at Corvette Diner. We originally expected 15 T's, but there was one no show and the Ewings were running late so twelve T's set off from Mission Bay Park down through Ocean Beach, up Hill Street, which has TWO stop signs on a 10% grade, I for one didn't stop... I waited at the top of the hill and a little later Doug came by to report all the T's had made it and I should continue. So we moved along to Point Loma. While the others were waiting in line, some walked to one of the WWII Batteries which has been restored to it's 1943 condition.

Most ate there, but several couples found the music much too loud to be comfortable and ate at one of the other establishments.

The original vessel was constructed in what we now call Guatemala and was captained by Juan Rodregas Cabrillo in 1542 for an expedition up the West coast of the Americas.

While the others were waiting in line, some walked to one of the WWII Batteries which has been restored to it's 1943 condition. After the Lighthouse, we moved along down to Liberty Station for lunch at the Corvette Diner. Most ate there, but several couples found the music much too loud to be comfortable and ate at one of the other establishments. After lunch, we all drove independently to Spanish Landing, less than a mile away for a conducted tour of the building of a replica of the San Salvador. The original vessel was constructed in what we now call Guatemala and was captained by Juan Rodregas Cabrillo in 1542 for an expedition up the West coast of the Americas. AS an aside, it had never dawned on me that ANY exploration of the West coast need the vessel to be built on the west coast as the Europeans had not yet found either the North or South passage around the continent and had still to find a sea route to China. The vessel is surprisingly small, typical of vessels of the era, but made of the most beautiful range of lumbers. Interestingly all the iron had to be brought from Europe, across the Atlantic and then hauled across the continent. Construction is almost complete and they will be "stepping" the masts within a few weeks. They plan to offer day trips and if all goes well, longer voyages down the Mexican coast. Participants included Doug Lested, Vic & Stephanie Terrell, Dale & Eleanor Stanfield, Tony & Heather Bowker, Mac & Diane MacPherson, Ron & Ann Lambrecht, Phil & Kimba Ewing, Doug & Neta Anderson, Bob & Linda Millen, John & Karen Pepe, Kirby Pray, Norm & Dolores Kling, Greg & Cathy Rising and Ken & Merleen Magers in a V8. Following the San Salvador, we drove back to Mission Bay Park, for farewells for the trip home. It was a great tour, thanks to Mac for the route and to Doug for making all the arrangements. 5 Tour to Joshua Tree National Park There will be a tour to Joshua Tree N.P. for the weekend of February 7/8, There will be two groups, one group will drive their Model Ts from home to the park and a second group who will trailer to the park. Rather than driving there and back in a single day, the driving group will take a more leisurely approach with two days to get there, two days in the park and two days to return. The route out will allow everyone to leave from their individual homes on Thursday 5 February and all meet for a lunch at the cafe near Lake Henshaw. In the afternoon we will drive down to Borrego Springs and stay at the Borrego Springs Motel. Next day we will traverse the Badlands, then on to Mecca (Plaza Garibaldi Restaurant for lunch?) and enter the Joshua Tree Park at the southern entrance and arrive at the Holiday Inn in Twenty-nine Palms. Saturday morning is undecided but we will visit Keys Ranch in the afternoon. Sunday will be trip down to Cottonwood. On Monday, February 9, the intrepid drivers will leave Twenty-nine Palms for lunch in Palm Springs and spend the night in Palm Desert at Motel 6. On Tuesday we will climb HWY 74, lunch at Lake Henshaw and return home. Drive there: Thursday Feb 5 Home to Borrego Springs 64 miles Friday Feb 6 Borrego Springs to Twenty-nine Palms 121 miles Visit the Park: Saturday Feb 7 Visit Keys Ranch starting at 1:30 pm. Sunday Feb 8 Visit Cottonwood Drive home: Monday Feb 9 Twenty-nine Palms to Palm Desert 60 miles Tuesday 10 Feb Palm Desert to Home approx 109 miles There will no charge for the the tour, you will book you own motel rooms for whole trip or just at Joshua Tree as suits your needs and purchase your own meals. Open to offers, call Mrs Christman at (I would guess $25-$50 might be enough Tony) My father, George Romain passed away 1 ½ years ago & I am trying to sell his 1921 Model T Touring that I helped him restore in the late 1960 s. It is still in excellent condition & was driven regularly up until his death. He was a founding member of the San Fernando Valley Chapter of the MTFC and he & my mother were very active members of the club. The children at the Lakeside Christian School have ALWAYS been very respectful of the vehicles and it has always been a pleasure to show them.

. After the talk, question and answers, then the ride, Greg spoke about the philosophy behind the early cars and how it still applies today.

After the visit, Dan lead us on a little tour on some back roads, very quiet, saw some wild turkeys, no picture!

9 Visit to Lakeside Christian School. I think I must be on a list of guys who will help schools... This is the sixth year the San Diego T Club has been invited to show our Model T's to a bunch of school kids. The children at the Lakeside Christian School have ALWAYS been very respectful of the vehicles and it has always been a pleasure to show them. This year we stretched a little and after we had given out little "Ford T is great" talk, we took all the kids for a ride around the parking lot!. After the talk, question and answers, then the ride, Greg spoke about the philosophy behind the early cars and how it still applies today. The kids then thanked us and I guess we are booked for 2015! After the visit, Dan lead us on a little tour on some back roads, very quiet, saw some wild turkeys, no picture! and then visited Jack-in-a-Box for lunch. Thanks to Greg Rising, Norm Kling, Kirby Pray, Dan Seeman and Ron Lambrecht for accompanying me on the visit.
