1 Volume 33 - Number 1 Established 1983 January 2015 Installation Luncheon January 25, 2015 The last Sunday in January is the date for the 2015 installation luncheon. We have selected the Butcher Shop restaurant (5255 Kearny Villa Rd, San Diego, CA 92123) and are looking for a great turnout. The individuall cost is set at $29 thanks to the proceeds of our annual auction. There is plenty of free parking, and only a couple of steps to get into the restaurant. The time is still 12:30 pm and we will eat at 1:00 pm. Remember, if you come in period costume, there is an extra door prize ticket for you. Use the handy coupon on page 7 to register your attendance, and we hope to see everyone there. Showing at the Museum Showing now: Balboa Park - The Early Years Congratulations to all the following who start off the new year with a birthday: Board Meeting - January 14 The next board meeting will be on Wednesday, January 14. 2 President s Message Every time I ask for input from the members about various things I always get ideas back and I thank you for it. People always give great suggestions. Keep the thoughts coming. As we write the schedule for this year I want to know where you want to go and what you want to see. We ve been lots of places and some we like to revisit, but I know there are cool things we ve missed. Call me or the tour chairman if you know of anything. It might be a destination of just a good Model T road to drive. We also like to have interesting speakers for the meetings. If you want a subject covered or know of an expert in some field let me know. It takes all of us to make the club run and thrive. Be a part and keep those T s rolling. Sunshine Report With a sad heart I have to let you know that we have lost two wonderful member of our club. Helen Pierce passed away on Saturday morning at 10:55. I got this note from her daughter Marlene and she said. It really is a blessing- she is no longer suffering. She can be with Dad now, and she has no more pain. Don t have any further information for you. I think cards could be sent to the their home still. The Pierce Family 985 Monserate Chula Vista, CA Also, Gary Murdoch passed away on Dec 8. He was a former president of our club and very active until cancer set him aside about a year ago. We will miss him and should let Susie know of our support. See his obituary on page 4. Remember to call me at or me at judynjohn@burrellteam.com when something happens, so I can send out cards or call. We care about all our members in the San Diego Model T Club. 3 Ruckstell Review january 2015 North Park Toyland Parade by Greg Rising with Photos by Jim Train For several years we have participated in the North Park Toyland parade. It s one of the older parades in San Diego dating back to Since then there have been periods of hiatus, but the parade seems bigger and better than ever. I marched in it in 1966 with the Wilson Jr. High School band and the route went west on University Ave. from 32nd St. to Texas, then south to Morley Field. A few years ago when the Model T club first drove, it went east on University from Utah only to Herman St. Now it is much longer. It starts the same, but turns on several streets and ends up by Jefferson Elementary School on Utah south of University. There are wide streets to weave back and forth on and lots of people. Everyone is in a holiday spirit. We usually carry some young beauty queens. They all have their parade wave going and biggest smiles on. This year we had four Model T s in the parade - Greg and Cathy Rising, Jim Train, Kirby Pray and Norm and Dolores Kling. Kirby s car developed a bad metal-on-metal noise early and had to pull out. He just made it home on his own power. As long as we have our cars out we might as well find some other place to go so after the run we formed up with the Model A club for a trip to Old Town for lunch. We ate at La Piñata Restaurant on Juan St. I like this place not only for the food, but they have their own parking lot. This year we also did something very special. We got a guided tour of the Evans Garage on Pacific Highway. I have long heard about this place, but I wasn t prepared for the things we saw. What a collection! Bill Evans has some cars that are not only beautiful, but some are historically significant. Antique race cars seem to be his particular favorites. I was surprised when he wanted us to lift the hoods and examine the engines. Most museums are hands off affairs. This is a private where everything works and gets used - the best kind. Just like our cars these need to see the sun once in a while. Beside the cars there is antique furniture, clothing, and household items. All appear to be in perfect order. The showroom is beautiful too. It reminds me of the Nethercutt where the building vies with cars for attention. Go, if you ever get the chance. It s well worth it. It was nice to have the Model A club with us (they brought 14 cars!). The more the merrier I always say. Last summer we toured with the SD HCCA. That was a great time too. The Hidden Valley T club has a standing invitation for us to join them on their tours. Seems like we re on to something here. Join us next year. It s always a great time. 4 In Memorium Gary Murdock June 12, December 7, 2014 Gary was born in San Mateo, CA and moved to San Diego with his family when he was 13 years old. He met Susie in 1974 and they were married in He was employed by Teleldyne Ryan Aeronautics as an electronics engineer and was involved in the development of the altimeter for the Viking Mars Lander and later with the development of the radar system for the Star Wars program. He was a longtime member of the Model T Ford Club of San Diego and served as president for the 1992 year. His interests were far reaching and he enjoyed sailing, hiking and was a licensed private pilot. One of the things that he was noted for was the construction of a complete turn of the century (1900 s) machine shop under his house, complete with overhead shafts and pulleys, only after fully excavating the full basement by hand. No services are planned and he will be missed by all who knew him.
