1 Volume 35 - Number 1 Established 1983 January 2017 Installation Luncheon January 29, 2017 The last Sunday in January is the date for the 2017 installation luncheon. After a great experience the two last years, we have elected to return to the Butcher Shop Restaurant (5255 Kearny Villa Rd, San Diego, CA 92123) and are looking for a great turnout. The individual cost is set at $27 thanks to the proceeds of our annual auction. There is plenty of free parking, and only a couple of steps to get into the restaurant. The time is still 12:30 pm and we will eat at 1:00 pm. Remember, if you come in period costume, there is an extra door prize ticket for you. Use the handy coupon on page 5 to register your attendance, and we hope to see everyone there Board Meeting - January 11 The next board meeting will be on Wednesday, January 11. Location is Denny s Restaurant, 6970 Alvarado, La Mesa. Time is 6:00 pm. We should have plenty of things to discuss as we start a new year and look forward to our installation luncheon on January 29. Even though we haven t installed the new officers for 2017, you are certainly invited to come. We hope to see everyone involved there. 2 Happy New Year s everyone! Ruckstell Review January 2017 President s Message I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. The holidays are always a special time to embrace with family and friends. I know my girls kept Santa pretty busy. Santa really earned those milk and cookies this year. Well folks, this is my final message as your club President. It has been a great honor to serve such a wonderful group of people. For me, it has been an opportunity of growth, insight, perspective and along the way making a few new friends. At this time, I would also like to congratulate our new incoming President, Jerry Yeadon and new members elected to the board. As the New Year approaches, please keep in mind the importance of encouraging our youth to get involved with our hobby. This club is much more than a hobby; it is a family. I feel if they see what we see and know; they will be encouraged to join as well. As the great Henry Ford once said, Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success. Let s work towards success. Just as a friendly reminder, those who are interested in attending the air show at El Centro Naval base, please respond to the mass regarding the tour on Saturday, March 11th. I would like to have an idea on the number of cars and people attending. This way I can get everything in order to get them cleared to come on base and a guaranteed spot so we can display our cars for the show. This is another great opportunity to share our hobby with individuals from all over. The following day, we are going on a short tour following the Pioneer Museum in El Centro. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the annual banquet held at The Butcher Shop. Best Wishes, Eric Sayer, President Sunshine (and Showers) Report From Tony Bowker via the Hidden Valley Commutator: I would like to thank everyone who has sent Heather flowers, prayers and best wishes. She really appreciates everything but is so weak that it is beyond her to thank everyone personally at this timw. Remember to call me at or me at judynjohn@burrellteam.com when something happens, so I can send out cards or call. We care about all our members in the San Diego Model T Club. Judy Burrell Club Website Be sure to visit the club s website. Pictures of member s cars and car data are requested. The website can be reached at the following address: mtfcsd.com Special to Club Members Only A Members Only portion of the club website is available to members using a special password which will change fom time to time. 3 Ruckstell Review january 2017 Nethercutt/Petersen Museum Tours Ron Lambrecht By all accounts the 19 November bus tour to the Nethercutt and Petersen Automobile museums organized by Mac and Diane MacPherson and the Hidden Valley Model T Club was a resounding success. The event started with a 7:00AM departure from the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. It made for an early morning for those of us coming from the outer reaches of San Diego County but with the exception of a 15 minute delay due to an accident that caused a detour for some participants, we were on our way. Twenty seven people participated in the event including members of the Hidden Valley Model T Club, Model T Club of San Diego, and the San Diego Triumph Sports Car Club. It was a long day but well worth the trip. The bus finally departed the Petersen Automobile museum at 4:15PM and arrived back in Escondido around 6:45PM. Thanks again to Mac and Diane Macpherson for being excellent hosts. NETHERCUTT To say the Nethercutt Museum was the most amazing collection of automobiles, musical instruments from the era of silent films, plus other extraordinary collectables would be an understatement. I consider it to be the best automobile museum I have experienced. The Nethercutt museum is comprised of more than 130 of the world s greatest antique, vintage, classic and special interest automobiles including many top winners of the Pebble Beach Concourse d Elegance. Every car represented art on wheels. The museum consists of five floors starting with the basement full of classic high end automobiles and other collectibles to the main floor with a ceiling three stories high surrounded by a mezzanine displaying rare phonographs, pianos, auto memorabilia and multiple Pebble Beach trophies awarded to the cars in the museum. The main floor and primary show room was modeled after the high end automotive show rooms of the 20s and 30s and featured marble floors and pillars, wood paneling and detailed painted ceiling. The top floor consisted of a banquet room where the Nethercutt s entertained guests almost year around. It was surrounded by mechanical musical instruments, including orchestrions (generic name for a machine that plays music and is designed to sound like an orchestra or band), player pianos and music boxes, and antique furniture. Hidden in the walls were the pipes for an organ that once provided the sound effects in a theater featuring silent films. This museum is a must for car enthusiasts. PETERSON The Peterson museum was based on three themes: History, Industry, and Artistry. The history portion of the museum focused on private ownership of automobiles from the 1910 s through the 1930 s when mobility meant prosperity. Examples of first generation cars included a three wheel buggy car and the Model T Ford. The industry aspect of the museum focused on the personal stories of the inventors, mechanics, and drivers that pushed automotive technology in an evolving industry, and finally, a display titled The Art of Bugatti featured the artistry of the automobile through a display of a wide range of Bugatti designed automobiles. The highlight of the Peterson Museum for me was seeing a vehicle that was notorious for being an under-achieving crossover model, being neither a decent minivan, nor an SUV, and was also well-known for having an ugly, plastic appearance. That would be Walter White s Pontiac Aztek from Breaking Bad. It made my day. The second vehicle catching my attention was parked next to Walter s. It was the Thunderbird used for all of the close-up shots in the movie Thelma and Louise. Call me nostalgic but I thought seeing these cars in person was way cool. (Editor s note: Thanks to Ron Lambrecht for his reflections on the Nethercut / Peterson Tour in November. He provided over 190 pictures which can be seen at the following link). 3

6 Ruckstell Review january 2017 For Sale - Hassler Shocks, Complete set for front and back. Make offer. (07/16) Bob Anderson, (619) SOLD C-cab all wood body and bed by Ray Wells $1800. Model T chassis with front end, rear end all painted black $400. (04/16) Kirt Simpson, Wanted - 2 or 3 wire wheels for in good condition. (01/17) Kirby Pray, (619) kirbypray@gmail.com 13/14 Touring - So identified by the present owner because of it s 14 body and 13 running gear. He had located the man in LA who restored it in the 60 s or 70 s, and, according to his research, had decided that it was original. It was made in 14 but Henry had some 13 engines and transmissions left over so he used them (very typical in a model year changeover - Ed.). So it is registered as a 13 because of the engine number. The owner states: The car is in good condition. Good tires, upholstery, body, paint and all. Just had the gas tank and radiator cleaned but have not started it since. I have no doubt that it will run just fine. Along with the car I have an 18 engine with all machine work done, babbiting done, crank, rods and pistons installed. All parts are there for a complete engine rebuild. I also have an 18 transmission completely rebuilt with a hogs head that takes a starter (also have a starter). In addition, I have 4 demountable rims. All the above goes with the car. Am asking $14, for everything, but will entertain any reasonable offer. (08/16 0 Rev, 01/17) David Peterson, (760) dpete6104@gmail.com Editor s Note: This ad has been continued by request of Dave Peterson as there has been no response so far. Dave Peterson was a longtime member of our club who moved to Yuma, AZ in Anyone should recognize the excellent opportunity this potential sale represents.
