2 Minutes for HVMTC General Meeting September 2, 2015 Held at Charlie's, Escondido Attendees: Doug Lested, Mac & Diane MacPherson, John & Karen Pepe, Vic & Stephanie Terrell, Virgil & Sharon White, Doug & Neta Anderson, Ann Tunnell, Jim McCleary, Les & Barbara VanNordheim, Lou Schweizer, Dale & Eleanor Stanfield, Tony Bowker (19 total) Start Time: 6:55 PM President Doug Lested opened the meeting, Stephanie led the Pledge of Allegiance Old Business: There was no old business President s Report: We talked about last weekend s tour, which was a fun driving tour, in addition to a tour of the Burrell s home and garages. We all made it back, one way or another, Jim s car on the trouble truck, Virgil ran out of gas but Mac helped him out. A good tour, with a promise of maybe hitting the beach on base next time. Doug talked about a great addition to our cars if you want a speedometer/gps/odometer/tripmeter in your car, it will drop right into the space the cars have for the old style speedometer. It is made by Speedhut, and they will customize it for you. The price is $ Doug also found a place that reproduces registration stickers for cars. Any year, and they can match the engine number! They also make gas rationing stickers. The company name is Classic Inspection Stickers. Inspectionsticker.net Treasurer s Report: Diane reported we had $1, in the bank. Secretary s report: The minutes from the last meeting were approved. Tony s Report and general discussion: The newsletter, Commutator is out. Tony discussed the tour in Alaska. We also talked about tour leaders/followers and modern cars (like Model A s, hahaha) and discussed how important it is to stay together as a group and also to keep in mind the speed should be the speed of the slowest cars, not the fastest. That way no one gets left behind, and we all get to enjoy the scenery, even or especially at a slower pace! Mac talked about the Nethercutt (auto and collectible music instruments) Museum in Sylmar, and thought it would be fun to go as a group (without our cars). Mac if you have an interest in attending as a group. Virgil shared a book called Motoring West that talks about motoring back in the day (before now), when it wasn t as easy as it is now. Tour Chair: September 12 th HVMTC tour - Tour beginning at Mission Bay, over the Coronado Bridge, on to Imperial Beach and lunch somewhere in Imperial Beach - El Cilantro, or something similar. Assembly at the boat ramp at Mission Bay at 9AM. No RSVP required. About 43 miles, and maybe 8-9 cars will attend. October 10 th - HVMTC tour Stephanie talked about the upcoming tour to Rancho Penasquitos and the ranch there. A couple of routes were discussed, and the country sounds beautiful, mile tour October th - The SDMTC speedster run will be out of Ramona, CA October th HCCA/SD/OC and Long Beach MTC Autumn leaf tour to Goffs (on the west of Laughlin off old Rte 66) Maybe to Oatman, etc., lots of dirt road driving. Based out of the Riverside Casino $95/per November 14 th TBD at our next meeting, talked about going to the Nethercutt Museum as a tour December 12 th Our 3 rd annual Christmas lights tour February 6 th & 7 th 2016 Overnight tour to the Holtville Carrot Festival (near El Centro) through the first two weeks in February. There are museums to tour and a possible BBQ on Saturday evening, Sunday to the Carrot Festival and another museum, driving back on Monday. April 15 th and 16th 2016 Bakersfield swap meet April 22 nd Tour to Death Valley based out of Stovepipe The Opportunity drawing of $37.50 was won by John Alling The meeting was adjourned about 7:50. Respectfully submitted, Karen October 2015 Hidden Valley Model T Club Commutator Page 2

3 Tour over the Coronado Bridge Doug suggested a tour to include a drive over the Coronado Bridge, Tony suggested we start at Mission Bay as we did on the San Salvador tour. So five Model Ts assembled on Sept 12 at the boat Ramp in Mission Bay Park. The Ts were John & Karen Pepe, Dale & Eleanor Stanfield, Norm & Delores Kling, Ron & Anne Lambrecht and Tony & Heather. Doug & Neta Anderson in a modern were assigned as Trouble Car, they were asked to stay behind the last T in case of trouble. During the drivers meeting, Tony asked everyone to watch for the T behind and if it stopped, then you stop. This way if someone stops, the entire group will stop and be available to help. The initial running was from the boat ramp, along Mission Bay Dr, which turns into Pacific Hwy and incredibly we arrived Downtown without a single turn!! Once there we were met with road closures due to huge concrete pour. However it was well signposted with DETOUR signs, so we continued on towards the huge Coronado bridge. The initial ramp is quite steep but all the Ts made it with no problems, the view at 30mph is incredible. We all reassembled at the Tidelands Park where we decided we needed ice cream. Ron knew the way and after a couple of U turns we found free parking outside a Cold Stone Creamery!!! John prefers his dessert prior to his meal, so he was very happy. After the ice cream we motored on through downtown Coronado where the traffic lights broke up the group, however we all reassembled while driving along the Silver Stand towards Imperial Beach October 2015 Hidden Valley Model T Club Commutator Page 3

4 At Imperial Beach we stopped at El Clintro restaurant for a Mexican lunch. We managed to get a single table for all twelve tour participants, made for some interesting discussions. Then we continued on under I-5 and started to follow the freeway along the west side of the freeway, past the salt fields and some rather rough but paved roads. Eventually the road disappears into the Sweetwater River, so we made our way into National City, then back west onto Harbor Drive then onto Pacific Hwy. The huge cement pour was still proceeding, it really must be huge, but with no DETOUR signs!!! This required even more U turns and as we found a way around, we collected a line of moderns who were also lost. We moved us to the waterfront then up Grape Street back to Pacific Hwy and back to Mission bay, still with no turns. Back at the boat ramp, we loaded up, everyone commented that it was a great day out, the weather was not too hot, excellent route and a good meal. The idea of watching for the T behind seemed to work well, we lost no one and we managed to stay together in a loose but visible group. Tony thanked Doug for being the Trouble Car, not needed but very reassuring and to Karen for the pictures. Good day out and great company. 5 Driving Tour to San Clemente 29 August Doug proposed this driving tour to run from the Arts Center in Escondido through Camp Pendleton to Tommy's restaurant in San Clemente. As it turned out John & Judy Burrell met us there and invited us to their home and garage on the ride home. There were not many T's on the tour as several members were having T problems. In the event John & Karen Pepe brought their coupe, Tony Bowker his coupe and Frank Evis with his 27 Roadster with Mac as passenger. Several HVMTC members attended in either Model A's or moderns. Diane and Anne Tunnell had the trouble truck The Model Ts at Melba Bishop park We drove to Melba Bishop Park where we were joined by three more Ts, Joe Harding Virgil & Sharron White and Jim McCleary. Just before entering the base, Doug went ahead with a list of all the cars, drivers names and driving license numbers, I guess the security level has been raised. The trip to the Mechanical Museum was uneventful, but provided an opportunity to regroup. Then we continued on, some of us had never been North of the Las Pulgas tour off, fascinating countryside, with one quite steep hill. There is a built up area near the gate with a 15 mph speed limit, even my coupe was vulnerable to this one. We then passed a genuine NCIS building, I am watching the CBS show NCIS while writing this report!!! After exiting the base there was a short distance on I-5. which of course was blocked with traffic so the T's were able to navigate with no problems. October 2015 Hidden Valley Model T Club Commutator Page 5

6 John Burrell's garage Following the garage visit, we again re-entered Camp Pendleton for the run back to Escondido. A couple of T's were low on gas, Mac and Diane had some, so that worked out well. The Pacific Ocean View The upstairs garage Along the way, people dropped off at points convenient to their home, so that Tony was the only are to follow what he thought was the prescribed route. It turns out the instructions ended in the middle of Camp Pendleton, I guess everyone was suppose to know their way home... After leaving the park, Jim had a horrid noise from the transmission so he called AAA to take him home, we think a magnet let loose. Even the Trouble Truck decided that number of traffic lights on Mission was not worth shorter mileage than the trip through Fallbrook. Great tour, new areas to discover, but we could do with more Ts on the tour (and fewer Model As) and I personally think we need to make greater efforts to stay together and all follow the same route. TonyB For FREE I emptied Lee Pierces garage after the sale and most of the stuff I rescued is available for free (or a donation to the HCFI Library). There are Jacks, clutch parts, shackles, axles, a cleaning tank, lots of metal, boxed of nuts & bolts etc etc. Come to the barn and look it over.
