(Continued on page 2)
2 2 THE FLAKEY NEWS President s Corner I can't believe I m President again! You would think I would have learned my lesson by now (having been President three times already). I guess I m just a masochist. Thank God I ve got an excellent staff. And you can bet I ll be knocking on your door for support. I believe the most important job the President has is to encourage/commandeer/coerce/beg/borrow and steal support for all the Directors. So, make my job easy and volunteer to help one or more of the Directors. Thanks. How about the job Norma has done for the past two years. She and her staff have put together so many great trips, parties, meetings, etc. Norma, you ve set a new standard that will be hard to beat. Thanks. I would also like to say thanks to Bill Huber. Bill is handing over the Treasurer duties to Joan Arnold. Bill has been the Treasurer for many years and is in large part, responsible for the excellent economic health the Club enjoys today. Bill s leadership and economic knowledge has kept the Club on sound financial ground. No ENRONs here! Thanks Bill. Job well done! I hope you can still make it to the Directors meetings whenever you can. I'm looking forward to this coming year. Please feel free to me with any sugetions. With your help we can have a lot of fun. As Dan Reves says on the commercial "It s your future - be there." See ya, Phil Hollister From the Past President Congratulations to our new President, Phil Hollister who was elected at the March meeting. Shoals Corner (cont d) Cost for camping is $15/night (2 persons)...additional people - $7.00 each/night. Sign up fee for this trip is $5.00. For those interested in this trip, you should send a check for your first night's stay to Ann King, Lost Mine Campgrounds, 1000 Silvermine Road, Bryson City, NC If you have any questions and would like to speak with Ann, call her at Need additional information, contact Kay Durrett at For those interested in the Gatlinburg Trip (October 18-21), contact Bill Nelson at At last count, there are 3 spots available. April 27, Flowers Hall - 9:00 a.m. - March of Dimes shoals WalkAmerica Linda Walsh is coordinating our group that wishes to participate. Her granddaughter, Heather Trousdale, is the Ambassador, again, this year. Last year, we had really good participation from our group...we would like this year to be EVEN BETTER!!! Let's show everyone what we're made of. If you would like more information, contact Linda Walsh at For those of you who are interested in hosting a cookout/party, we have November open! Our cookouts are always a chance to get together and share a few hours of good food and great company! So, join in...it's lots of fun! We even help you clean up the mess!! And, for those who really want to get involved...we need meeting leaders for July and August. That's it for this newsletter. Please join us at our next meeting, April 18, 2002, Red Lobster, Florence. Jim Durrett will be leading! Don Aston Phil brings a dynamic personality and leadership capabilities to the Ski Club. Let's all pledge our support and assistance to Phil and the new Board. Your ideas and suggestions are always welcome. Norma Henderson Oberlies
3 THE FLAKEY NEWS 3 Western Trip Coordinator 2003 SKI SEASON MEETING NOTICE There will be a meeting Tuesday, April 9th at 7:00PM at Phil Lindsey's for anyone planning or thinking about planning a ski trip during the season. Also, anyone who has previously been a trip coordinator is welcome to attend and share their experiences and expertise. Purpose of the meeting will be to coordinate proposed trip dates and plan presentations to the Board for approval. Directions: From I-565, take exit 13 to Madison Blvd. (old Al. 20), turn left onto Zierdt Rd (at Wyle Labs), turn right at Edgewater Blvd.(at the light), turn right onto Spinnaker Dr., turn left onto Gray Run Dr. ( 3rd street on the left after getting on Spinnaker) and 104 will be the 3rd house on the right. Or you can call if you get lost. Phil Lindsey From the Past Western Trip Coordinator Well the 2002 Huntsville Ski Club ski season is officially over. Members should be on their last trip, Whistler, when you receive this Flakey. from the feedback, the seasons has been a total success. Since this is my last Flakey I am taking the opportunity to recognize and thank the people who have made my job an enjoyable one. First I thank the club members for their participation in the trips and their cooperation and support to the trip directors while on them. Second I cannot than the trip directors; Charles, Stuart, Sue, and Tom, enough for the outstanding and professional job they did on their trips. I and the club members really appreciate the time and effort you expended to in making sure that the members had an enjoyable and memorable adventure. Last, I thank the board members for their support and counsel during the past year. Now it is time to think about the 2003 ski season and support your new western trip coordinator, Phil Lindsey. Anyone who is interested in being a trip director next season should attend a meeting at Phil's house on April 9 at 700 pm. Thanks again for a great year. Jack Social Summer Cookouts Summer Friday Night Cookouts begin the end of April. For those of you new to the Club and are unfamiliar with the cookouts, here is how they work. A member of the Club volunteers their home for a Friday night (or Saturday, for out of town locations) cookout. They provide grills, paper supplies like plates/cups/napkins, forks/spoons/knives, soft drinks. For this, the Club reimburses them $ Everyone attending brings a dish to share and whatever they want to grill for themselves, if they want to grill, and their own chair. These cookouts continue all summer, until we run out of warm weather or hosts. If you would consider hosting a cookout at your home, please contact me to schedule a date. To sign up early and get the date of your choice, give me a call at or send an entitled "HSC Cookouts" to me at "fsmith2203@aol.com". Thanks in advance for your support of this activity. (Freda Smith) New Orleans Trip Those of you who have given your address to Sue Chattam and Charlie Ross (and if you haven't, please do...), or were at the HSC Club meeting this month, you know the details of this trip. For those who haven't heard, here's the info: The bottom line is, the total cost of the trip, which includes buses, train, transfers, tips/hotel baggage handling, 3 nights at the Queen and Crescent Hotel (located 2.5 blocks from the French Quarter and 3 blocks from Harrah's Casino, in the Garden District), continental breakfast, and flight back on SWA, is $341. That's less than $4.00 per hour for the weekend!!! We'll leave Huntsville by bus on Thursday morning, November 14, arrive in Birmingham and board the Amtrak train at 1:14 P. M. for the seven hour 'party' to New Orleans. We'll be (Continued on page 4)
4 4 THE FLAKEY NEWS Social (cont d) picked up at the train station and taken to the hotel, where our bags will be unloaded and taken to our rooms. We'll be free to explore on our own on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and will transported by shuttle to the airport to catch the 7:00 P. M. SWA flight back to Birmingham on Sunday, November 17, arriving at 8:00. The bus will pick us up and take us back to our cars in Huntsville. Some have expressed an interest in having lunch at Emeril Lagassi's restaurant while we are there, so we will probably try to do that on Sunday (that cost is extra...). Let me say that this trip is limited to 56 people/28 rooms. I already have 43 slots/21.5 rooms filled. If you are planning to go, I need to know right away, as I have to book the train before it fills. Deposit/reservations with a list of names must be received by Southwest Airlines by April 7 in order to hold the airline tickets. So, if you are interested in this trip, please call me right away. I will need your $55 check, which is non-refundable but goes toward your total, asap. Thanks. (Freda Smith, ) Social Events I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you for electing me to serve the Club in the position of Social Director of the Huntsville Ski Club for the next year. This is a position that I have held before and thoroughly enjoy the involvement with such a great group of people as yourselves. If you have not worked with the Club as a member of the Board of Directors or an officer, please start thinking now about doing so next election. You'll receive so much more back that what you will have to give. We have a few social things in the works: the cookouts, the Fourth of July Party, and the Christmas Dance. We need more ideas! Please, please feel free to contact me or any other member of the Board to suggest ideas for activies. This is your club, so don't hesitate to be involved.
