Congratulations to Sandy Jones on the birth of her quadruplet grandchildren born on Dec. 1. They are all doing well and are in Huntsville Hospital. Congratulation to Jane Chandler and Leon Hastings for their engagement. I hear that the big event may take place in the spring. We are in the process of planning some new activities as well as the annual trips for the year. The Nantahala trip has been scheduled for the July 18--July 21. More details in the coming months. The Gatlinburg trip is scheduled for October The Becky Dollman chose this weekend since the leaf color should be near its peak. Bill Nelson is reserving #59 and Rocky Top again for the Shoals folks. Barbara Tuchel has also reserved a chalet for October (Mon. through Thurs. prior to the weekend) for those that would like to spend the (Continued on page )

Charles Blakey and Jim Hall did a wonderful job of planning. Skiing was not all that great. Several injuries. Nothing major (except to the people who were hurt). Folks who did not care to ski had a great time. So little time, sooooooo much to see. Thanks to Charles and Jim for coordinating this trip. Big news upcoming, is election of officers. Elections will take place in March. From my point of view, I can tell you that, should you decide to serve, you will be richly rewarded. Meanwhile, if you have ideas for improving the Club or any suggestions for events you would like to sponsor, contact the Board of Directors. Thanks for your support over the past year. PLANS ARE UNDERWAY FOR SOMETHING FUN TO DO ON THE WAY BACK AFTER SPENDING A COUPLE OF HOURS IN LYNCHBURG. NOTHING MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN SPRING IN TENN. COST WILL BE $0.00. LUNCH, BUS TRIP, SNACKS ON THE WAY UP, ALL INCLUSIVE. BUS ONLY HOLDS 54 PEOPLE, FIRST COME FIRST SERVE. HAVE TO HAVE RESERVATIONS BY FIRST WEEK IN APRIL. THEY REQUIRE THREE WEEKS CANCELLATION. SIGN UP AT JAN. MEETING. IF YOU WANT TO GET ON THE LIST NOW, CALL NORMA RECREATION Ballroom Dancing: Every Tuesday evening at Skate Odyssey on South Parkway, Ballroom dancing is taught at 7:0 pm. A new dance is taught each month. Cost is $4:00. Cajun and Zydeco Dancing: HOGWILD, every second and fourth Monday, 7pm-9pm, Free Contra Dance - The 1st and rd Sat and if there is, 5th Sat. Contra daning is old time country dancing. It's lots of fun, no partner required, there is live music. It is held at Faith Presbyterian Church on the southeast corner of Whitesburg Dr. and Airport Rd. Look for the NACDS sign (North Alabama Country Dance Society) Beginners lessons start at 7:00, and the dance starts at 7:0. Wear light clothing as dancers tend to get quite hot, and wear soft sole shoes (dance is on a gym floor). This is lots of fun and easy to pick up. Sunday Easy Bike Ride to Mullins: The Spring City Cycle Club meets at Winn Dixie on Whitesburg Dr. at 9:15am and rides to Mullins for breakfast and return to Winn Dixie, about 16 miles round trip. They ride back streets, very little traffic. For more information call Mary Ann (Louise ) Johnson or Harrie (Thelma) Dobbins Birthday Celebration for Janet Emery On February 17 I will be turning 50. My one goal I have had the last several years is to be able to still be playing hockey. At 2:45 PM February 17 I hope that I can reach that goal. I would like to share this point of my life with my family and a few friends. The event will happen at the Ice Plex on Leman Ferry Rd. on Ring 2. There is no chargefor watching the game. Afterwards we will go to Wings which should be around 4:00 PM. Eats will be Dutch for everyone. No Gifts Please. One day my nieces and nephews can tell their children that their crazy Aunt Janet was a weird bird. Hope you can come. 3 THE FLAKEY NEWS Western Trip Coordinator The SKI season is here and members are either on a ski trip or getting ready to leave on one. Feed back from the Europe trip is mixed since several people got bruised up some while the others had a great time. So pack up and think SNOW. Lots of snow in Montana so the Big Sky trip should be a good one. There is still time to sign up for Monarch for those on the fence. Ski safe. Jack Picnic with the Stars Sunday, April 21, :00 2:05 Cost $1.00 Come out for a Sunday afternoon of fun with the Huntsville Ski Club and the Huntsville Stars. We ll meet for the picnic at the stadium at 1:00 and then stay for the game between the Stars and the Chattanooga Lookouts at 2:05. This is always a fun and popular outing, so don t miss out. Last summer, we had 52 people attend, which I think was our largest group, ever! Tickets may be purchased at the February and March meetings or by contacting Freda Deadline for purchasing tickets through the Club is Wednesday, April 10. Tickets will be distributed at the April ski club meeting on Wednesday, April 17. This is not a ski club trip but it is available to ski members. We really appreciate the Dotson's hospitality since they have hosted the Super Bowl Party for at least four years. The Astons have scheduled their cookout for March 2, and the Durretts plan to have the second annual "Texas Independence Day " cookout on March 16.The next meeting will be on February 21 at Red Lobster with Jennifer Aston leading. 4 4 THE FLAKEY NEWS HIKING Don't pass up an excellent opportunity to train for ski season.weekly hikes started the first weekend in October. They occur each Sunday afternoon at the Monte Sano State Park. Hikers meet at the Park's hiker's Parking Lot at 1:15 PM and begin hiking at 1:25 sharp! The group decides on the trails to follow and thus the hike is called a consensus hike. The hikes usually last about 2 hours. Much fun is had by all who attend. Bring water and snacks if you desire.
