1 The Flakey Huntsville Ski Club Newsletter May 2017 President s Message, Jodi Stephens WELCOME TO HUNTSVILLE SKI CLUB THE FLAKEY! The new board has met for the first time. The first Action Item is the upcoming ski season trips. Can you believe it, we just finished our trips, and here we are planning next year? It is shaping up nicely, and I think everyone will be excited. As always, we will make the announcement of the proposed trips in the June The Flakey, and signups will begin at our June meeting. At the end of March, Gene Hartsfield and Bob Breeden attended the Mountain Travel Symposium in Banff, Canada. This event attracts over 200 vendors to present their properties. Gene and Bob said it was a little like speed dating as each vendor talks to you for a set amount of time, and then the next vendor comes in. It can be overwhelming, but it is very important. We appreciate Gene and Bob taking not only their own time, but representing HSC at this event. HSC is allowed 2 participants because we handle more than 4 trips each year. As I write this input, there will be 5 of the HSC members traveling to Myrtle Beach, SC for the CSC Spring Convention. At this event we will see vendors from multiple locations within the US, and outside the US, providing us with information on their ski areas and accommodations. The party theme this year is African Safari. Diane Brown has designed a table for us, and we will all be looking for Safari outfits. Wish the HSC group good luck in winning this event. WHAT S HAPPENING NEXT? FIRST COOKOUT AND BEYOND: Bob Breeden s get together April 16 was wonderful. The weather cooperated, and over 20 people attended. We all enjoyed bar-b-que and chicken, plus all the yummy dishes everyone brought. Sherry Riddle has a cookout planned a little later in May, and Ron Paulus cookout is scheduled for June 3. Mark your calendars now. Get in touch w/freda Smith if you would like to host a cookout. DO YOU HAVE AN IDEA FOR A SPECIAL EVENT OR ACTIVITY? HSC is always open to new ideas. Please contact the appropriate committee chair/co-chair and they will provide you with the policy on how to submit a special event or activity. Let s recycle some ideas, and present new ones as well. HIKING: Hiking is being discontinued for the summer. BIRTHDAY CLUB! We want to wish our members Jay Hammond, John Kastanakis, Cathy Nelson, Roberta Ress, and all other members who have a birthday this month, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! We are so glad you are a member, and wish you a great day of celebration with family and friends. YOU ARE WELCOME TO BE OUR GUEST! We meet each month on the third Wednesday at Huntsville Area Association of Realtors (HAAR) on the corner of Holmes Ave and Monroe St. at 7:00 8:30 pm. Have a wonderful HSC day, Jodi Stephens - HSC President

2 From the Ski Trip Co-Directors. Gene Hartsfield & Bob Breeden We are working out the details for next season s trips. We hope to have Board approval on all the ski trips before the end of May. The details of the trips should be listed in the June Flakey and sign-up night should be at the June meeting. So be sure to add this to your calendar! You will not want to miss out on next season s trips. If you are interested in leading one of next season s trips with the possibility of earning a free ground package, please contact Gene or Bob. Phone: (256) or (256) ski.gene@yahoo.com or bob.breeden1008@yahoo.com In addition, to the HSC trips that we plan, CSC is running trips to: Steamboat Springs, CO December 2-9, 2017, Mammoth, CA January 13-20, 2018, and Killington, VT March 18-24, 2018.

Most if not all of our planned HSC events will be posted on Meetup and we hope will attract younger people to our club. Once you register, Meetup.com allows you to see what s happening locally in any and all your areas of interest. It is a free service in most cases. Check it out.
