1 The Flakey Huntsville Ski Club Newsletter August 2015 From the Prez Hello HSC Members & Friends! It s hot out there! Keeping cool is the main goal for us all this time of the year. But staying indoors under the air conditioner is not the way a lot of HSC members choose to spend their hot summer days. We go camping, kayaking, biking, cooking outdoors, cycling, swimming, and lots of other activities to keep ourselves busy during the off-ski season. During the month of July we went camping in the Nantahala gorge where we hiked and went white-water rafting with other Crescent Ski Council friends. We also spent a day doing our annual canoeing and kayaking on Bear Creek. It has truly been a fun-filled summer so far. At our June and July HSC meetings, we rolled out our planned ski trips for the upcoming ski season. Thanks to Gene Hartsfield, our Ski Trips Director and our ski trip leaders, we have put together some great ski packages to great destinations. Be sure to check out the trip flyers contained in this newsletter and share them with your family and friends. Going on a ski trip with HSC friends is something special and I look forward to doing it every year. The month of August brings us many more opportunities to get together. Look at our list of events and our calendar so you can keep up with what s going on. And, if you have not done so yet, check us out on Facebook. This is where you can see the most recent pictures and get a heads-up on many activities that never make it into the newsletter. We welcome Joanne Gromek as our new Newsletter Editor. She has graciously volunteered to take over this important duty for our club. We also want to thank Shirley Whitten for her great work as editor for the last couple of years. If you have an activity that you want to include in the newsletter, please provide Joanne your input, in near-print-ready form, by Monday after our monthly HSC meeting. Looking for something to do??? We meet each month on the third Wednesday at Huntsville Area Association of Realtors (HAAR) on the corner of Holmes Ave and Monroe St. at 7:00 8:30 pm. Refreshments will be served. Have a wonderful HSC day, Bob Breeden - HSC President (931) From the Ski Trips Director Don t miss out on a great ski season; some scientists are predicting the strongest El Nino in 50 years. This should mean great skiing out west all season. Hopefully, you have not missed the early sign-up for trips. On most trips the $15 sign-up fee doubles to $30 on July 31. Sign-ups for all five 2016 ski trips started at the June meeting. The response from the membership has not been great. Some of the trips have several signed up, while some have just a few. All the trips have more slots open. All these resorts are wonderful locations with great prices. Invite you friends to go on one or more of the trips. All locations are good for beginners or non-skiers. Now is the time to sign-up to reserve your slot on your favorite trip(s) before the trip is cancelled. If a trip does not have enough to meet the minimum requirement it may have to be cancelled. Review the information that follows on each of the trips and sign-up on line for any of these trips. 2 Picabo Street Coming in September!!! We have a very special speaker coming to visit us at our September meeting. Olympic skier Picabo Street, once one of the leading downhill skiers in the world, now an Alabama resident and mother to four boys, will be our special guest. Picabo won several Olympic medals and championships during her career, her most notable win being the gold medal in the Super G event at the 1998 Winter Olympics; she has had her share of injuries, too. Come have your picture taken with Picabo, chat with friends old and new, and enjoy refreshments at our September meeting on September 16th. At our August meeting, August 19, the ski trip leaders will describe their trips and be available to answer your questions. Sign-up for one or several of our 8 ski trips we have available for the season. Our trips make it easy and affordable to go skiing and it s fun to travel with a group. The benefits of booking a group are passed along to the trip participants. Sign-up is still going on so get signed up while you still can. Diana Faust, Publicity Director

10 BIG SKY, MONTANA MARCH 12-19, 2016 Big Sky Resort is the home of America s Biggest Skiing. It has over 5800 acres of skiing for every level of skier from you hot doggers to the first time skier. It has 33 lifts, a tram and no lift lines or crowds. Not only are you going to enjoy a week of wonderful skiing but, I will also be making arrangements to Yellowstone National Park for either a snow coach or snowmobile tour. The Big Sky trip will be the week after the Park City, Utah trip. Jim Randolph and I will work together with you on the best ways to do transportation so you can go on both trips. At the present time we have air Huntsville to Bozeman, Montana to $ Sport America is working on getting a better prices leaving out of Huntsville and Nashville. Frontier will open their flights up for March 2016 in Sept. The bus price is for any flights you may come in on. This is a Crescent Ski Council trip organized by Sports America. 12 Upcoming Special and Social Events Saturday, October 3...October Fest!!!!! Come for traditional German brats and beer, prepared by the Artisan Apartment's very own Chef Christophe. Location will be the air conditioned community room, outdoor grill and pool area at "Artisan at Twickenham Square." This fun event is at 700 Dorothy Ford Lane near Huntsville Hospital and the new Publix. There are plenty of wide screen TVs to watch football, a pool table and space to dance to recorded sounds provided by Doug and Diana. Tours of the model apartments might be available too. Price will be $15 per person--everyone must buy a ticket whether you eat or not; first 50 can be accommodated. Bring chairs, side dishes and desserts to share if you wish (but no other food may be grilled), and your own beverages if desired. 13 Santa s Schoolhouse Run 5K We are proud to announce that HSC will be a sponsor for the Santa Schoolhouse Run on September 19 in downtown Huntsville. The start/finish line is at the intersection of Monroe Street and Holmes Avenue and the run begins at 8:00 am. The run benefits Christmas Charities Year Round. We would be investing in CCYR as they celebrate 66 years of sharing and caring in the community. To be guaranteed a t-shirt, you must register by September 1. The fee to register is $20. More information for registering for the run will be provided at the August 19th meeting. So lace up your shoes and practice those running strides!
