1 The Flakey Huntsville Ski Club Newsletter May, 2014 From the Prez May 1, 2014 Hello again! May is already here and it brings with it lots of activities to keep the members of the Huntsville Ski Club busy until we can get back on the slopes again next winter. We ve already had lots of activities including hikes, bike rides and even a few cookouts this year and we look forward to many more. We especially want to thank each and every event host for their dedication and hard work and also encourage all our members to take advantage of these opportunities as often as possible. The event hosts spend lots of time and even their money in planning carrying out each event and we need to show them our support so these type of activities will continue. [The picture was taken at the CSC Spring Convention in Myrtle Beach, SC last weekend. Wish you were there.] Urgent Need! Ed Bernstein has been the HSC treasurer for several years and has asked for a replacement. He will turn over his books to someone this month. Planning for next year s ski trips is now happening. Several potential ski locations have already been identified and vendor bids are available for some. Gene Hartsfield, our Ski Trips Director, is holding an important planning meeting on Apr 30 at 6 pm at the Huntsville public library. Please be there if you are interested in leading a trip or assisting. If you can t make the meeting, please call. His number is Looking for something to do??? 5 From the Social Committee... Huntsville Ski Club's social committee got the year off to a swingin start with a dinner and dance party in April at Diana and Doug Faust s. We are forming up the new year and planning some fun events for you, including lining up a series of summer dinner parties at members' homes. If you can host a cookout or potluck dinner this spring or summer please tell Ina Jenkins or Diana Faust and get an early pick of the date you want. All the home dinner parties are going to start at 6:00 unless otherwise specified by the host or hostess. While it is hard for those who work to get home, put their dish together, drive for half an hour or so in rush hour traffic and arrive unfrazzled, there are also those who like to attend other events after the dinner. So we have arrived at what we hope is a happy medium. The dinner parties will start at 6:00 unless otherwise stated. Some of the following events are special events but are included here to help you see the whole picture. Coming up in the near future, in digest format (look for details elsewhere in the Newsletter) are the following: May 2 Casa Blanca Cantina 1001 Heartland Drive 5:45 May 9 this date is open for you to host a party - call us! May 16 Logan s Roadhouse 4249 Balmoral Drive 5:45 May 24 Lake House Party at Ron Paulus 2:00 rain or shine May 30 this date is open for you to host a party call us! BUT if you let us (Diana or the host/hostess) know you expect to attend and it has to be cancelled due to weather, then we will try to notify you that it is cancelled. If you do not let us know you are planning to attend and it has to be cancelled due to weather, you will not be notified. A good way to find out about cancellations is to check the Ski Club's Facebook page. Notices posted there are instantaneous. 8 Saturday, July 12: HSC Is Cordially Invited to Low-Cost Music and Dance at The Cooper House Here's your special summer 'stay-cation'--an invitation to the social event of the season--150 years ago. Many of us attended the very popular Civil War Sesqui-Social ( ) last year at The Ledges. We agreed that the period dresses were well worth the trip. If you missed it, this year will be even better: more period music, a guest dance mistress, commentary by folks in character; unique food truck and traveling sutler from Florence, with crafts and clothing. Hold Saturday, July 12, 6-9pm, when we're again invited by the Tennessee Valley Civil War Round Table (RT) and our own chili queen, Carol Codori, the new RT president. The unique venue for 2014 is the beautifully refurbished Cooper House, an antebellum home at 450 Randolph Street in Huntsville. Inside the great room and parlors, period music, dance, dress, and camaraderie will reign. Reasonably priced food and beverage items will be for sale from a terrific food truck, Neon Lilly's of Madison. Weather permitting, we can eat, stroll or dance on the patios and lawn, while the music is piped out. (Please note: No need to bring chairs. Neither your own food and drink, nor alcohol will be permitted due to Cooper House rules. But you can find it at the Arts and Entertainment district, at nearby Court House Square.) The Round Table is co-hosting this Civil War Sesquicentennial Commemoration with two others: the Huntsville Traditional Music Association, who played to acclaim last year, and the Huntsville- Madison County Historical Society. The groups will be filming an informal documentary during the evening about life in 1864 Huntsville. Ladies, wear in your simple long skirt or don those fabulous period dresses again. (We especially need Confederate ladies in mourning garb.) Gentlemen, wear any uniform, your western hat or a fun period look. Casual dress is welcome too. Tickets are $10/person for advance sales; $15 per person at the door. They expect a sell-out. Tickets will include a $5 coupon toward a new annual membership to RT, HTMA or HHS. Carol will sell tickets at May-June HSC meetings, or you can buy them at at the sesqui-event tab. The Round Table is a 501.c.3 organization. Net proceeds go towards education about the American Civil War and preservation of regional historic sites.
