1 The Flakey Huntsville Ski Club Newsletter January 2018 President s Message, Jodi Stephens WELCOME TO HUNTSVILLE SKI CLUB THE FLAKEY! HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday season with family and friends. Now for the 2018 Ski Season and more. CHANGE IN OFFICERS: In November the Board informed the attending members that Pat Edwards had resigned due to relocating. The Board voted to fill the vacancy with Kathy Alexander as Secretary. CRESCENT SKI COUNTIL SPRING MEETING: The CSC Spring Meeting will be held April 27-29, 2018 in Myrtle Beach, SC. The Club has already reserved two 2-bedroom condos (4 people). One is reserved for 4 nights ($276), and the other for 3 nights ($220 each). It is a great way to meet other skiers from the Southeast, and to meet some of the vendors. When these two condos fill up, we will reserve more. Bob Breeden will coordinate this trip. Registration includes a Welcome Reception (Thurs), Vendor Show and DJ party on Friday Night, and Saturday Night Theme Party (we tied for 1st for table decorations last year!). ALL HSC MEMBERS are invited to attend this event. Get your group together now, and let Bob Breeden know as soon as possible. YEAR END WRAPUP: CHRISTMAS PARADE: Many members came out and worked on the float for the December 5 Christmas Parade. A big Thank you to Troy Wolz for lending the garage of his new house; Steve Austin arranged for the truck and trailer. Diane Brown provided the design and all of the materials. On December 5, Steve Austin, Diane Brown, Kathy Alexander, and I represented the HSC in the parade. It was cold, but we all had a lot of fun CHRISTMAS PARTY: Kudos to Diana Faust for a very successful Christmas Party. There were many obstacles that were overcome to provide this party and Diana did a great job. I've heard great things about the event. Diana along with Sue Chatham, Paulette Bernstein, Nan Case, and many others (I don't have all the names) made this a success. Congratulations to you all. MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS: Please help our Treasurer and Membership Chairs by completing all information on Membership Forms. This helps us keep our records up to date. WHAT S HAPPENING NEXT? January kicks off the Ski Season for The group had a great time at Steamboat Springs early in December. We hope that everyone has a great ski trip and returns safe and healthy. All the trips are listed below: January 13-20: Mammoth Mountain, CA January 20-27: Lake Tahoe, NV January 27- February 3: Salt lake City, UT February 3-10: Taos, NM February 10-17: Telluride, CO March 10-17: Banff, Canada March 17-24: Whitefish, MN March 18-23: Killington, VT BIRTHDAY CLUB! We want to wish our members who have a birthday this month, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! We are so glad you are a member, and wish you a great day of celebration with family and friends. 2 From the Ski Trip Co-Directors. Gene Hartsfield & Bob Breeden Ski Trips The ski season is here!!!! For those of you that missed the CSC Steamboat trip in December, you missed a great trip with some outstanding instruction. The next trip is the CSC trip to Mammoth, CA. While the Club only has a handful signed up for this trip, the snow looks great on this one. The following week the Club will be visiting South Lake Tahoe. We still need members to sign-up for this trip. The snow looks great on this one also. Later in January, members will be visiting SLC, and in February, we will be at Taos, and Telluride. It s not too late to sign up for the Telluride trip. Then we will have Club trips to Baniff, and Whitefish in March. Both of these trips have open spots at this point. See the trip flyers below and contact Trip Leaders for more information. We still need trip leaders for the 2019 ski year. The club needs your help in planning and running a trip next season. This can be a fun and rewarding opportunity. If you are interested in running a trip in 2019, please contact Bob or Gene. We will start the planning process in March. CSC will be running a trip in 2019 to Crested Butte, CO, in January in addition to the annual December trip to Steamboat. It s not too early to start thinking about the 2019 season. Think Snow!!! 4 The Huntsville Ski Club s annual Christmas Holiday party was held at UAH s Conference Training Center on Saturday, December 16, The black-tie optional gala was attended by 120 guests who mingled and mixed while enjoying cocktails from 6-7 pm. A welcome greeting was delivered by event chairman Diana Faust at 7, followed by a buffet dinner of broiled salmon, chicken marsala, green tossed salad, roasted red potatoes, fresh green beans and trimmings. Dessert was blueberry cobbler and red velvet cake. The band Valley Cats of Athens started the dance portion of the evening at 8 with lively tunes that got the dancers on the floor. During the band s first intermission break, a marble cake with HSC s blue and white logo and soft cookies were served on the dessert table. During this time, Diana Faust gave thanks and recognition to the ticket sellers of the event -- Freda Smith, Ina Jenkins, Sue Chatham, and Renata Limmer -- and presented them with poinsettias. She also thanked Paulette Bernstein and her decorating team for transforming the cavernous hall into a winter wonderland. Diana recognized and praised Nan Case for working her magic in turning a few simple materials into the gorgeous centerpieces that graced 15 dining tables throughout the hall. Thanks were also given to Dave Taylor and Bob Breeden for providing a slideshow and video that ran throughout the evening projected on the wall behind the band. Diana, assisted by Ina Jenkins and George Cass s guest Marguerite Lee, presented an array of door prizes during an intermission, keeping everyone s attention focused until the band started up again. After 3 sets of music, dancers were still filling the floor when the Valley Cats played their last song and said good night. They were definitely a hit. Also deserving thanks for making the event the success it was, are Freda Smith, Social Committee co-chairman, Pat Brewer for decorating the reception table and bringing fresh greenery, Paulette and Ed Bernstein, Doug Faust, Johnnie Sanborn, Sally Waters, Sue Chatham, Nan Case, and those who stayed late to clean up.
