Redhead Ramblings By the time you get this I should be back in Huntsville after 2 wonderful ski trips and a hike into the Grand Canyon. Hopefully I will still be walking under my own power!! Hope everyone is having a wonderful time on their ski trips with zero injuries coming back to haunt us! There is still time to go to Big Sky if you have not had enough or are just getting your spring break plans together! Come out and join your friends at some club activity this month...training, social, or recreation! Lots of plans in the works for April so don't get that calendar too full! 2 Recreation Christie Buck Bicycling/Pot Luck, Saturday March 19th, 3:00 p.m. Glen and Christie will be hosting a bicycle ride/pot luck at their ho me, 225 Case Road. Meet there between 2:45 and 3:00 for a mile bike ride around their pretty neighborhood. Pot luck will begin around 5-5:30, or when the bicyclists return. Directions: Take I-565 heading east. Go over Chapman Mt.., where I-565 ends and continues as Hwy. 72. You can turn left at either the first (Moores Mill Road) or the second (Shields Road) traffic light at the bottom of the mountain. Go to Winchester Road and turn right. Look for Food Valu, then Domino's Pizza on the right. Just beyond that you'll see the El Mariachi Restaurant. Prepare for a sudden right turn into Winchester Estates (Oletimers Road). Take your first left off Oletimers onto Sawmill Road, then the first right onto the next road, which does not have a sign, but is Case Road. We're the 2nd from the last house on the right. We are hoping that this event will coincide with the flowering of the many Bradford Pear trees on our street. 3 Cave Tour and Hike On Saturday, April 2nd, there will be a hike from the Land Trust Parking Lot to the 3 Caves which we will tour. Meet at 2:30 p.m. at the Land Trust Parking Lot. We will divide cars between there and the Caves and then do the approximately 1 1/2 mile hike (which they suggest to allow an hour for), followed by a guided tour of the Caves (another hour). We will get everyone back to their vehicles and then go for dinner to a restaurant TBD. If there are any Land Trust members who could assist by picking up a free map at the Land Trust office, please let me know. There may be a charge for the tour: amount to be determined by number of attendees. More on that at next month's meeting. The Shoals group met February 17 at Red Lobster. We were happy to welcome new members Gail and Joe Leal. Details of our scheduled cookouts were given. On February 26, Randy and Karen Myers will host their second annual Weird Food Cookoff. Awards will be given for the most unusual (but edible) entree, vegetable and dessert. This should be interesting! On March 12, Jim and Kay Durrett will host their annual Texas Independence Day Cookout at 6:00 Don your favorite western wear and bring a dish for all to share. Jim, the brisket, will prepare. Eat as much as you can bear! Keith and Donna Gay Underwood will host their cookout on April 23. Ron's annual Huntsville/Shoals Lakeside Party is scheduled for May 21. Volleyball, boating, fishing, swimming on Wilson Lake. Bring a lawn chair, a dish to share, and meat to grill. The Durretts are planning a trip on April 8-10 to see the horse races at Keeneland Race Track, Lexington, Kentucky. Contact Jim Durrett at for information. Don and Jennifer Aston are planning a weekend trip to DeSoto Caverns. They plan to visit the caverns on Saturday, eat dinner the Flat Rock Grille in B'ham, stay overnight at the Amerisuites at Riverchase, and visit the B'ham Museum of Art on Sunday afternoon. Jennifer ( ) is requesting weekend preferences for a trip date, any of the four weekends in June or September 24. The Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg trip is scheduled for Nov We currently have 22 on the list for this popular trip. Bill Nelson needs a $30 deposit to hold your spot. Please call Bill ( ) and send your deposit ASAP. Barbara and Bob Tuchel are planning a New Year's Eve 2005 Party in Tunica. They would like to get a general idea of how many would be interested in coming. 3 GATLINBURG FALL HIKING/COLORS TRIP 05 (Oct. 7th 10th ) You can t beat this trip for hiking, sight-seeing, shopping, partying, dancing and just spending a long (Columbus Day) weekend with great friends. Accommodations will be as last year in the beautiful Carol s Castle Chalet with its 13 bedrooms, 13 full baths, large gourmet and 2nd smaller kitchen, and two outdoor hot tubs. 5 Jim Will Local Trips Spring Trip to Fall Creek Falls, May Time once again for the annual "retreat" to Fall Creek Falls State Park, TN. Don't miss out on this fun, relaxing weekend on the beautiful Cumberland Plateau. Activities available there include hiking, bicycling, golfing, tennis, horseback riding, canoeing, Ranger led programs - there's plenty to do, or you can do nothing if you prefer. Accommodation: There is still one space available for a male in a Lakeside Villa (accommodating a total of 6), and 2 Woodside Cabins for 4 people each. Also, if anyone would like to get into a villa, please contact Christie (see below) to get on a waiting list - it's not uncommon for spaces to become available. Cost: Cost per person for the 2 nights (including signup and party fees) Lakeside Villa = $70 Woodside Cabin = $75 Camping is also available for $17.50 per lot per night (with water and electric) or $20.50 per night for lots with sewer hookup. Eating: There is a restaurant at the Lodge which features a Friday night seafood buffet. Breakfast and lunch are also available there. Each villa/cabin has a fully equipped kitchen, so you can bring your own food, if you like. On Saturday evening, we will have a cookout. 7 Fred Killmeyer Training Ski season is winding down but a good training program will enhance your Joie de la vie. Join your fellow club members at one of the many events below and enhance your fitness for life. SWIMMING A new activity and good overall workout that can be done at your own pace. We swim on Thursday nights at the off Drake Road. Starting between 5:00 and 5:30PM but dry and in the lobby by 7:00 PM if you want to go to dinner. Come join us at the Hiker s Parking Lot in State Park at 1:15PM, leaving at 1:25 PM sharp! Hiking boots are recommended along with water and a snack. Hikes usually last about 2 hours. BIKING Due to the lack of daylight the regular bike rides are suspended until next Spring. However, there will be Emil notified rides when the weatherman cooperates.
