It s time to turn out the lights, the party s over for this board. Do you remember who use to sing that on Monday nights? I want to thank my board for doing a great job this past year and say it was a pleasure serving with you. Your cooperation was nothing short of exceptional and I appreciate it! Good luck to the new board. I know you will do just as well or better. Thanks to the nominating committee. You were quick, thorough, and fair. Job well done! And thanks for nominating me From the Pres... In the Flakey. for VP (cause I m going to tell my fish story next year!) Make sure you attend the March meeting to vote in the new board. Show your support for them that night and throughout the next year. Months ago I asked you to step up to the plate and help out when asked. Many of you did. Just about everyone I asked to help did and I sincerely thank you. Remember, It s your future be there. See ya, Phill Hollister New Board Nominees 1 Ski Trips & Shoals Corner 3 Training 4 Social 5 Recreation 6 Fall Creek Falls Trip & Fort Walton Beach Trip 7 Ski Trip Photos 8-9 Calendar 10 Officers & Membership Application 11 Shoals Corner by Don Aston We had a great turnout At the Super Bowl cookout at Mike and Vickie Dotson's! Sure was fun! We had a good turnout at our February meeting. Lynn Simms brought his mother Katherine as a guest. We always enjoy having Katherine join us, plus she makes Lynn behave himself. Well, almost. Kaye Durrett is working to put things in place for Nantahala in July and should have details at the cookout at Jennifer Aston's parents lake home on March 1. Reservations usually have to be made in March at the campground, so anyone going will have to be at the cookout or call Kaye Durrett shortly afterwards. The cookout March 1 is a Mardi Gras theme cookout, so we should have some good Cajun food. Randy Myers and Karen Wood have volunteered to bring Cajun music and will teach Zydeco dancing at the cookout for anyone who wants to give it a try. Directions to the cookout were given out at the meeting. Jim Durrett announced the Kiwanis Pancake Day on Feb. 28 and March 1, and reminded folks that showing up right at closing time might mean you won't get any pancakes! Wendy Trousdale, Linda Walsh's daughter-in-law came to the meeting with her husband Brian and their two children to give a (Continued on page 3) 2
Ski Trips As of this last week in of February, three HSC ski trips have been successfully completed (Switzerland, Vail, and Monarch), one trip is out now (the NASA trip to Big Mountain), one leaves this weekend (Lake Tahoe), and the last trip to Grand Targhee leaves March 23. Reports have been good and everybody seems to be having lots of fun, even the ones who don't ski. My first time skiing Vail, all I can say it is huge, almost overwhelming (front side, back side, new side, etc., etc.) and Vail Village is very European. Such a variety of runs. No wonder it is rated #1. Monarch was fantastic. Powder snow every day. Jack (Vail) and Sue (Monarch) were superb trip coordinators as are all of our ski trip coordinators. They all deserve more credit and thanks than we can possibly give them. Please let them know that you appreciate their efforts. Be sure and attend the March meeting and hear all of the exciting trip reports. Phil Lindsey, Western Trip Coordinator Grand Targhee March 23-30,2002 (AEA week) Charlie Ross, , charlie_ross@knology.net We potentially have space available on this wonderful trip! Pre Trip Party scheduled on March 15 at 6:00 pm Please submit articles for April Flakey to Barbara Hitt at bghitt1@comcast.net by March 25. (Shoals Corner cont d.) presentation on the March of Dimes WalkAmerica on April 5 at UNA in Florence. Their oldest child, Heather, was born extremely premature, and Wendy showed a video of still pictures taken from Heather's birth through her coming home from the hospital in Birmingham after 5 months. Wendy did a great job, and we were all really moved by her story. Premature birth is the leading cause of infant death. Through the March of Dimes research, a test was found that enabled Wendy to know that her second child would also be premature unless certain steps were taken! This is a great opportunity to join our friends and help a worthy cause also. More details will be available at the next meeting, but anyone can call Linda Walsh to get information! Linda did say the walk will be a little longer this year, but if Linda can do it, anyone can! The next cookout is at the Durrett's on March 22 at 6 PM. This is a Texas Independence Day theme, so nice comfy Western wear is it! Our next meeting is on March 20. Peggy McCloy will be our leader! The Shoals group could not secure suitable accomodations the same dates as the official sanctioned Ski Club trip of October Therefore, anyone in the Ski Club who wishes to eat, fellowship, eat, hike, eat, shop, and eat this fall in new condos about a mile west of Pigeon Forge, please contact Bill Nelson. The tentative cost of the trip, including most food, is $130, based on two per bedroom. We will spend the first night on Thursday, November 13 and return home Nov. 16. Each of the two condos which have been reserved so far have 5 bedrooms and 4 baths, pool table, ho t tub, screened in porch and nice livinig and dining areas, along with good parking. Reserve your place ASAP and see the Christmas lights in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. 3
TRAINING HIKING Hiking is a great way to get ready for the ski season! Come join us at the Hiker s Parking Lot in Monte Sano State Park at 1:15PM, leaving at 1:25PM sharp! Hiking boots are recommended along with water and a snack. Hikes usually last about 2 hours. Contact Fred Killmeyer, , fkillmeyer@comcast. net for more information. TENNIS We play tennis every Saturday morning at 9:00 AM at the Huntsville High School courts weather permitting. All levels are encouraged to join us for mixed-doubles, 30 minute round robin sessions, lasting a total of approximately two hours. Call Kathy French, for more information. BIKING/BLADING The regularly scheduled bike/blade outings on Tuesday and Thursday evenings are over for this year. Special events will be posted by to those interested. Contact Fred Killmeyer, , fkillmeyer@comcast.net for more information. PRSM Fitness Center Ski Club members qualify for the group discount at PRSM. The PRSM facility is located across from Grissom HS and your workout routine can be designed by Mark Noble, well known sports consultant, at no additional cost. Mark has done numerous programs at ski club meetings and is also an avid skier! For a tour and/or more information call PRSM at Don't pass up these excellent opportunities to train.. If you are interested in adding other activities related to training or more information on our present activities contact Fred Killmeyer. And, now, Swimming! Anyone interested in swimming on Thursday at the Natatorium at 5:00PM, contact Fred Killmeyer. [Is there no limit to Fred s energy level?] 4
SOCIAL *Friday, March 5:30ish---West End Grill, located at the intersection of Rideout Road and Old Madison Pike. Meet for happy hour and/or dinner. *At the next meeting, there will be a sign-up calendar for Friday Night Cookouts. Please sign up early to get your weekend of preference. For those newer members who may not know, on Friday nights, starting when the weather warms up (usually April) and continuing throughout the summer, until the weather cools off (usually October), we have Friday Night Cookouts. A member volunteers to host the Club members at his/her house on a particular date. They provide grills, plates/ flatware/ice/sodas (for which the Club reimburses them $25) and members bring whatever they want to grill (if anything) and a vegetable or salad or dessert to share with others and BYOB. It s a good venue for making new friends or just spending time with old ones! I want to thank everyone for the opportunity to serve as your Social Director this year and wish the best to the new Social Director. You have been a great group to work with! I want to give a special thanks to all of you out there who made my job so much easier by volunteering to host cookouts/parties in your homes, who sold tickets and/or helped with decorating for special events, who participated in the social events in any capacity. Thank you, you are great! Freda Smith, Social Director 5

Hiking, bicycling, tennis, canoeing, horseback riding, and golf are all available. I have reserved 6 villas, which would comfortably accommodate 6 (2 per bedroom) and 3 Landside cabins for 4 people each (2 per bedroom). That's a total of 48 spots. There are also camp sites available for anyone interested in a more "rustic" accommodation. Cost of a villa is $ (including tax) per night, split between 6; and cost of a Landside villa is $ (including tax) per night, split by 4. Cost of camp site is $18.50 per night for first 2 people. One person from each accommodation will need to hold it with a credit card. Let me know when you have determined your cabin mates and I will give you further information on calling in to reserve your villa or cabin.
