Due to the hour, some folks chose to eat breakfast food and others chose lunch food. In either case the food at Dino s Den was pretty good. We nearly canceled the dinner at Countyline Tavern in Buffalo Grove on the 19 th but our last minute appeal brought out a few couples. Kathy Randall reported that they had good food and good conversation. I know the weather is pretty miserable. But February has some fun things to do to take your minds off it highlighted by the International Motorcycle Show on the 15 th to 17 th. There is also a breakfast gathering on the 2 nd and the dinner at Tiffany s in Des Plaines on the 16 th ending with the chapter meeting on the 24 th. Tiffany s was chosen due to its proximity to the Stephens Convention Center where the motorcycle show is happening. We wish everyone a happy Valentines Day. Ellary & Holly Kahan Chapter Meetings are held at Dino s Den, 88 E Grand Ave, Fox Lake, IL, 9 AM breakfast, 9:30 meeting.

4 February Dinner Iknow it doesn t seem like it, but riding season is right around the corner. It just so happens that the International Motorcycle show is coming to town on February 15th thru 17th. As usual, it is being held in Rosemont. I know the bike show has been kind of up and down the last few years, but I m sure you ll find something that you just have to have! After you find that special something, please come join us for dinner on Saturday night at Tiffany s Restaurant in Des Plaines. We have a room reserved for us at 7:00pm. Even if you don t plan on going to the bike show, you should make a dinner ride to come join us. This is a 2 or 4 wheel event (ha, ha). I do need to get a head count for the restaurant. Please let me know if you can make it A.S.A.P. My contact info is on the flyer. Hope to see you there! Mike Plumeri 4
5 From the District Educator This Spring we are scheduling rider classes and MFA/CPR classes in Vandalia and Sterling. Dates for Vandalia are April 27 and 28, Saturday and Sunday. The schedule is: Saturday April 28 will be a trike class starting at 7:30am to approx. 11:30am class room, then break for lunch and start the range portion at 1:00pm to approx. 4:30pm. At 5:00pm we are heading down to Keyesport to the Keyes Restaurant. At the same time the rider class is conducted will be an MFA/CPR class starting at 7:30am to approx. 12:00pm then lunch. Those that want a Road Captains Course will be from 1:00pm to approx. 4:00pm. On Sunday just change out trikes for bikes, same time table. We will need a head count in able to have enough instructors for the Road Captains Course ahead of time. Sterling will be trikes Saturday May 4 with the class room starting at 7:30am and the range approx. 1:00pm. An MFA/CPR class starting at 12:00 to approx. 4:30pm. Sunday May 5 will be for bikes with MFA/CPR in the pm. This way for both locations if a trike rider needs an MFA/CPR they can take it on Sunday and a bike rider needing an MFA/CPR can take it on Saturday. This will all take place IF there is enough interest. The logistics of getting enough instructors for each location and each class has to be planned way ahead of time. We have 5 instructors coming from 2 other states to get certified for the bike courses in Sterling, so we really NEED bikes for Sterling. On Friday April 26, will be a District ride to Niemerg s Restaurant in Effingham, leaving Vandalia approx. 6pm, after we mark the range in Vandalia. Bob Adams will be leading this ride. 7 January 27 Meeting Minutes The meeting was called to order by Mike Z. around 9:30AM. A new member, Mitch Polifka and his mother Beth (a former Goldwing rider) introduced themselves to the group. Mitch has owned several motorcycles and is considering buying a 2012 or newer Wing in the near future. We introduced ourselves and gave the year and mileage of our bikes to give him a reasonable range of mileage to expect. Bob G. explained the cost-effective maintenance plan offered by Honda dealers (especially if you ride as much as he and Arline do) and Mike described our wrenching day and the things we do to our bikes on that day. Other topics included what to look for in a used Goldwing, the desirability of one with a working CB radio and the pros and cons of installed aftermarket equipment. We all offered to do a test ride to give him our opinion of a prospective bike and what we thought needed to be done to it. Tony related the test ride by a former G2 member who tested his bike before he bought it. Mike P. gave a status of The Amazing Challenge and said that the participant list was full and there were five on the waiting list, if anyone cancels. Because of this, the event will not be publicized in Wing World as a GWRRA event. We discussed the desirability of parking lot training for interested members. Liability concerns dictate that those wanting to do this should arrange for this on their own with MSF classes in the area. Mike and others praised the Harley training classes but urged that one be familiar with a Harley before signing up. THE NEXT MEET- ING WILL BE ON February 24, Respectfully Submitted, Tony Valicenti Secretary

9 What s In a Name Part 1 I ve traveled many roads since living in Lake County, IL and on my way up into Wisconsin, as I m sure many of you have on your motorcycle trips and more. Have you ever wondered how some of them got their names, especially if it was a little peculiar? Well, I have long pondered how Half Day Road and 7 Mile Road got their names to start off with. Half Day Road, it turns out, is actually named after the town of Half Day. Originally, according to WBEZ, it was the supposed travel time to get to and from Chicago to Half Day, of course using a slower mode of transportation. The town of Half Day was one of the first towns in Lake County, and was the site of Lake County s first post office, first school, and first permanent white settler. Reading further, the name Half Day is thought to be derived from a Potawatomi chief named Aptakisic. Aptakisic s name roughly translated to center of the sky or half day. Other accounts suggest the name meant He who could do a whole day s work in half a day. and-the-origins-of-a-semantic-slipup/cd88fe1b-befd- 42c0-8cbe-5e54636c787e The other road I was curious about was 7 Mile Road in Wisconsin. This was more difficult to get information on, and the only info I could gather was from WUWM at Apparently, when the roads were created, they were divided into 1-mile section lines. Every section line marks a new mile, and it just so The Good Book Guide If you like courtroom dramas and action novels then you ll love Mississippi Blood by Greg Iles. Penn Cage is the mayor of Natchez, Miss. and a former prosecutor. His father Tom, a doctor, is on trial charged with the mercy killing of his former nurse and one-time lover Viola Turner, an African-American woman who was suffering from terminal cancer. The Double Eagles, a KKK splinter group, have declared war on Penn requiring 24 hour security protection for him and his family. Penn teams with Serenity Butler, a famous black author who plans to write about Tom s case and an Army veteran. Together they look into the secrets of Penn s family, the Double Eagles and the South. Relentless pacing keeps the story rocketing with unexpected brutality erupting on every page. Critics claim that the courtroom scenes are among the most exciting ever written in the genre and I concur. This is among the best I have ever read. This is the conclusion to Iles Natchez Burning trilogy so you may want to start with the first two novels, Natchez Burning and The Bone Tree. Ellary Kahan 9 happens that counting began at the seat of county government, which is located at 7 th and Wisconsin in Racine. The reason why some of the roads have names other than a mile marker was reported because it was common for streets to be given the names of the landowner. As I was doing this research, I also came across, 10 Quirky Street Names We Found in Wisconsin. I don t know the origins of these names, but thought I would include them for fun. 1) Chicken In The Woods Road, Three Lakes 2) Assman Road, Mishicot 3) 29 3/4 Avenue, Washburn County (which reminds me of the train station platform 9 & 3/4 in the Harry Potter series), 4) Fur Food Road, Stratford 5) Darn Republican St 6) Reek Road, Weyauwega 7) Crass Road, Tomahawk 8) Intersection where Hooker Av meets Pleasure Dr in Madison 9) Pigtail Alley, off Highway 33 near Portage 10) Green Haze Avenue, off Highway 38 in Mt. Pleasant. You can google the Quirky names if you like for the accompanying comments. So, there you have it. My quirky thoughts as I go about my travels. Here s hoping that 2019 is starting off healthy, happy, and safe in your travels. Don t get too distracted by the quirky names if you see them! Darlene Parks
