I joined the group via car but was told the ride was nice. Everyone enjoyed dinner at DC Cobb s in Woodstock. Due to the weather forecast the ride was canceled. But the weather turned out to be fine so some rode to the restaurant. The menu had some very unique items including some very interesting burgers. I enjoyed the veggie burger. It looks like this restaurant will be a keeper for the future. The weather forecast was spot on the day of the chapter meeting so the rain nixed any ride after the meeting as well as any ride to the meeting. We had good attendance for the meeting though in spite of the rain. But it was disappointing for me since it would have been my first day back in the saddle after my back surgery. August has a breakfast ride on the 4 th, a dinner ride on the 11 th to the Prime Quarter in Janesville and the chapter picnic on the 19th. Be sure to let Lonnie Gilsinger know what side dish you plan to bring to the picnic. We wouldn t want anyone going hungry. This just in: the 2018 Goldwing is Rider Magazine s motorcycle of the year. Congratulations Honda! We hope to see you at these events. Ellary & Holly Kahan Chapter Meetings are held at Dino s Den, 88 E Grand Ave, Fox Lake, IL, 9 AM breakfast, 9:30 meeting.

3 You Never Ride Alone By Eric Trow Amotorcycle carries more passengers than you probably ever realized. I introduced my daughter Heather to riding when she was a kid, teaching her to ride a dirt bike on the large open plateau conveniently located adjacent to our neighborhood. Heather was not a particularly adventurous child and, as such, did not tend to dive into new activities on her own, especially if those activities seemed at all daring. Teaching her to ride a bicycle was a particularly traumatic experience for all of us, as I recall. And I can remember standing in line at the water park for what seemed like hours only to have Heather retreat once it was her turn to enter the chute. Yet, in her own time, she picked up the motorcycling basics quickly and did well as a new rider and smiled as she maneuvered the impromptu rack we created on that dirt property. It probably encouraged her even more when she became the talk of her elementary and junior high schools as classmates (especially the boys) learned that she could ride a motorcycle. Pretty cool stuff. Heather also enjoyed riding with me as pillion rider on my various street bikes. There was something very special about the times we headed out together for a dad and daughter ride to a not-so-nearby breakfast spot, or maybe to visit a relative we hadn t seen in a while. I wanted her to enjoy the experience, so I did all I could to make certain Heather was comfortable on each ride. I put conscious effort into riding more smoothly, accelerating more gradually and cornering more gently. Riding through the hamlet of our local suburban sprawl, I navigated traffic with great patience so that she would be less intimidated by all of the hubbub around us. I was doing my best to create a riding experience that was enjoyable, would foster her interest in motorcycling and, of course, would keep her safe. And then something unexpected happened. While riding alone on my way to pick up her brother Parker for a planned motorcycle ride together, I was involved in a crash just a couple miles from where the kids lived with their mother. I was broad sided when a car, operated by a novice driver, pulled blindly out into traffic. She didn t see me because I was impatiently accelerating around a large SUV that was turning onto the side street from which she was emerging. The inexperienced 17-year-old driver should not have pulled out and across multiple lanes of traffic, but I should not have allowed myself to be there when she did. And I wouldn t have if one of my kids had been on the bike with me; I would have been more cautious and thoughtful. But, if I m to be truthful, I rode differently when I was by myself. I rode harder, faster and pressed the limits (and my luck) more freely. I was willing to accept much higher levels of risk when I was riding alone and this time, my luck ran out. And so did my daughter s interest in riding on a motorcycle. When my kids got word that I had been rushed to the hospital to be checked out after being struck by a car, they were distraught. After all, I was becoming a recognized motorcycle safety expert and, if a guy like their dad could be hit by a car, then how could anyone be safe on a motorcycle in traffic? For Heather, her interest in motorcycles was wiped out the moment I was wiped out by that car. She was done riding. Yet, while she may not realize it, Heather has been with me on every ride since that fateful crash in Once I witnessed just how much effect my solo riding incident had on my family, I began to understand that we, as riders, never truly ride alone. We may be the only person aboard the bike, but the implications of the choices we make when we ride solo can and do have life-changing impact on our families, just as if they were physically on the bike with us when a bad thing happens. While they may not suffer physical harm from a mishap, the emotional and even financial injury can be deep, debilitating and enduring. The risks we choose to take when we are alone are risks that we take with our loved ones lives. And so, I encourage all of us to remember to take our family, friends, and loved ones with us on every motorcycle journey, whether that be an epic trip to the other end of the continent, a routine trip to the store, or a trip down a favorite stretch of winding road. Having them ride with us, needs to be part of our motorcycling mindset on every ride. 5 From the District Educator Do you check with any new riders before a ride to ask if they are diabetics? When planning rides remember some riders may need to eat at a specific time Does Timing of Food Matter with Diabetes? By Jennifer Bowers Ph.D., RD Eating certainly affects glucose control. But does the timing of your food intake really matter, as long as you take your medications when you re supposed to? What about European cultures who favor a larger midday meal? What time of the day should you eat for optimal glycemic control? Glycemic Control Certainly, regularly scheduled meals and snacks are best for glycemic control. This is a long well-known principle. Standard of care recommendations are three meals, 4-5 hours apart, same or similar times of the day every day. Before we continue with this article, I wanted to let you know we have researched and compiled science-backed ways to stick to your diet and reverse your diabetes. Want to check out our insights? Download our free PDF Guide Power Foods to Eat here. Setting your meal times and medication times on a regular schedule will result in improved glucose control throughout the day, and over time, evidenced by improved HbA1c values and improved insulin sensitivity. A sample daily meal schedule would be: 7:00 a.m. 8:00 a.m. breakfast + 12:00 p.m. 1:00 p.m. lunch + 5:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m. dinner. Regular recommendations are 60 grams of carbohydrate at each of these meals, but that should be individualized by working with a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE). Individuals on long-acting insulin will need a bedtime snack including grams of carbohydrate to avoid nighttime hypoglycemia. This can be tricky for people working a night shift, or other lifestyle issues affecting a typical schedule. Again, work with an RD or CDE to determine what can work for you. Hunger & Satiety Eating on a regular schedule, with small frequent mini-meals keeps you satisfied. Skipping meals in order to lose weight eventually ends up with overeating at the next meal. Eating the traditional three larger meals each day may lead to hungry spells in between. Hunger scores were significantly improved in human subjects fed a larger morning meal compare to those fed a larger evening meal. An important key is mindfulness of satiety feelings. Paying attention to whether or not you are truly hungry or satisfied can regulate how much you eat. Eating slower and more mindfully would benefit anyone with difficulty controlling their food intake at a meal. Energy Stabilization Just like glycemic control, energy levels stabilize and regulate with regular meal times. Your circadian rhythm for sleep is similar to that of food and glucose needs, and subsequent energy levels. Especially in diabetes, energy levels are linked to regular eating times because the glucose needs are more specialized. Weight Reduction More recent research confirms the age-old belief that timing of food affect weight status. Eating late at night contributes to weight gain, eventual obesity and adiposity. Feeding animal and human subjects at the wrong times (i.e.; in the dark) results in higher deposition of fat tissue for storage. Meal timing throughout light hours has been proven to influence not only obesity, but weight loss therapy. If a larger meal is consumed during the light hours, the Mediterranean cultural norm of a larger mid-day meal is associated with healthier weight status than a larger evening meal. This held true independent of overall caloric intake. Late eaters lose less weight than earlier eaters, regardless of total calories ingested. Circadian Rhythm It is long known that sleep patterns follow a circadian rhythm, with sleep occurring most naturally during the dark hours. Newer research shows that our organ systems have a natural daily rhythm including stomach, intestines, pancreas, liver, and even adipose/fat tissue. There is also a synchronization of the organ systems with each other, fully dependent on food intake. For example: the mouth produces salivary amylase in response to food intake. In turn, the stomach works in gastric emptying, the pancreas releases insulin, the intestines absorb nutrients, and the liver releases bile. All things work together like a functional machine. Keeping food intake on a regular schedule enables these organ systems to function at an optimal level. Submitted by Steve Brungard reprinted with permission 5

8 July 22 Meeting Minutes No regular monthly meeting was held in June because of conflicts with Father s Day. Lonnie Gilsinger started the meeting with a discussion of the annual picnic to be held on Sunday, August 19 at the Grant Woods Forest Preserve in Ingleside. Lonnie will bring freshly made iced tea (Tony will bring lemons), but pop will not be furnished this year, so BYO, if you don t like iced tea. Jim Letarte announced that the overnight ride, planned for July will be rescheduled for August. Bob Graeff volunteered to organize an overnight ride to Spring Green, WI, some August weekend and will check out hotels in the area. Jim asked for suggestions for other potential overnight rides this season. Other rides and events are given in the ride & event schedule elsewhere. Craig will lead an apple orchard ride after our chapter meeting September 23. A possible overnight ride to Lake Geneva was suggested for September Mike Zyskowski will lead the annual color ride in early October. David Bierman recounted some of the highlights of our 2018 GL1800 test rides in late May and Ed Harms gave his impressions of his recent test ride. The 2018 Amazing Challenge was described in Lonnie s well-written article in last month s newsletter. The 2019 event is planned for June 28-30, 2019 (which will not conflict with our chapter meeting) and will be a GWRRA event, saving us insurance expenses. THE NEXT MEET- ING WILL BE ON August 19, Respectfully Submitted, Tony Valicenti Secretary Useful links Woman Rider Rider Magazine Motorcyclist Online 8

9 VIEWS FROM THE VALLEY: ARI- ZONA IS NOT ALL DESERT! Hi everyone! It s hard to believe I have been in Arizona for 15 months now. But, it s true. I remember when I first joined Dan after our house sold, we were busy looking at permanent houses and properties, but we did take a little time off now and then. One of those times off was last spring, when we took a day trip- by car. Though we did not take the bike, we could still appreciate the uncongested, uncluttered, natural and raw beauty of the trip. We had taken Route 88/Apache Trail to 188 and saw three of the four separate lakes made possible by dams constructed by the Salt River project (SRP) to provide water and electricity to neighboring areas, not to mention the added benefit of recreational water activities. All four lakes are a part of Tonto National Forest and have a lot to offer in the way of camping, boat tours, fishing, and water sports. The first of these we passed was Canyon Lake, which has a marina and a campground. It is located at N.E. Highway 88, Tortilla Flat, AZ, Per Gold Canyon.net, the lake was formed by the Mormon Flat Dam, which was completed in 1925 after two years of construction. Canyon Lake, with a surface area of 950 acres is the third and smallest of four lakes created along the Salt River. It is also touted as the smallest but most picturesque by another site. The road, which was blacktop up to Canyon Lake, turned into a washboard dirt road a couple mile after the lake. Link to map: The next lake, Apache Lake, is dubbed the hidden gem of the Salt River Lakes. Apache Lake provides its visitors with unsurpassed views and unrivaled seclusion. Surrounded by the Superstition Wilderness and the Three Bar Wildlife Area, Apache Lake is 17 miles long and a spectacular site for boating, fishing, water sports, hiking, camping, and all forms of outdoor recreation. Apache Lake Marina and Resort is accessible only by driving the historic Apache Trail (or State Route 88), which has been named one of the most scenic drives in Arizona. Apache Lake.com. And this is where Dan and I stopped for lunch, savoring every mouthful! The third lake, Roosevelt Lake, is the largest of the four lakes. Per Arizona Southwest.net, Roosevelt Lake was formed by the construction of a masonry dam on the Salt River in 1911, making it the oldest artificial reservoir in Arizona and the lake is the largest in the state except for those on the Colorado River This leg of the journey proved to be the roughest of the route, extremely bumpy, and narrowing at one point to a one-lane narrow road. At one point we had to back up a bit to let a vehicle pass from the other direction. As we neared Roosevelt Lake we were thrilled to see that we were encountering blacktop once again! The fourth, Saguaro Lake, is downstream of the other lakes, and is the fourth reservoir on the Salt River formed by the Stewart Mountain Dam in the U.S. state of Arizona. The lake is off State Route 87, about halfway between Phoenix and the ghost town of Sunflower. Unfortunately, we did not get to see this one. Driving through this rough terrain, though challenging and desolate at times, truly gave me a feeling of peace and restoration. We could also see a few boats on the rivers, or people enjoying some of the water activities as mentioned above. It truly appeared to be an outdoor lover s paradise! Darlene Parks The Good Book Guide In a digital lab in Seattle in 1986 a group of virtual reality programmers rush to complete the Cavern, an empty room that can become anything imaginable. In Beirut, a man is held hostage in another empty room with only his imagination and memory to get him through his captivity. How these two worlds come together make up Plowing the Dark by Richard Powers. Powers prose is rich in metaphors and immense detail that one critic has described as poetry. He delves into the thoughts of the characters and their relationships. His style uses italics for the dialog between the Cavern programmers while using conventional quotation marks for the dialog between the hostage and his captors. The former wasn t obvious until after the first several pages. I found his detail distracting making it difficult to know the point of the narrative and also difficult to follow the story. He seemed to ramble a lot. I didn t understand the point of his relating the stories of the programmer and the hostage. His critics rave about him so it must be me. I m used to narratives that flow easily and are easy to read. I did not find this book easy to read. Ellary Kahan 9
