The star of the show was the new Honda Goldwing. Three bikes were on display. One of which was on the floor on the side stand for people to try out the seating. I found the seat to be comfortable enough and I could easily place my feet flat on the floor. I also noticed that the chrome engine covers from the GL1800 are missing exposing the rear brake fluid reservoir and oil filler, which is now on the left side of the engine. The rest of the show was rather mundane with nothing new that I could see. Kawasaki was promoting its new luxury tourer as a cheaper alternative to the Goldwing. Breakfast at Elly s on Feb. 3 was a nice gathering for those of us who attended. Elly s has a nice variety of offerings on their menu. Thanks to Jim Letarte for arranging this breakfast. Dinner at 75 th Street Inn on Feb. 10 was well attended and the food was excellent. It was a bit far for some to go in the winter. It took me an hour to get there. But the food and company was worth the trip. Thanks to Tony Valicenti for organizing this event. For March we have the first aid class on the 3 rd, dinner at La Hacienda de Los Fernandez on the 10 th, the chapter meeting on the 25 th and wrenching day on the 31 st. We hope to see you at these events. Ellary & Holly Kahan Chapter Meetings are held at Dino s Den, 88 E Grand Ave, Fox Lake, IL, 9 AM breakfast, 9:30 meeting.

6 VIEWS FROM THE EAST VALLEY Happy Days Are Here Again Well, Dan and I hosted our first event in our new home- a Super Bowl party- and had the pleasure of having David and Merle join us. I m not a football fan, so I can t tell you about the game, but those of you who are probably saw it anyway. Everyone brought something, so we had a nice little smorgasbord, as well as a Bean Bag toss and, of course, comradery and conversation! I finally felt like things fell into place in my new home here in the East Valley. For those of you unfamiliar with the greater Phoenix area, it is divided into the East and West Valley. The following Saturday, Dan and I finally went to our first actual GWRRA meeting since we moved out here. The meeting was with Chapter D in Mesa. It was also attended by Dave Bierman. We enjoyed breakfast and meeting new fellow Goldwing riders. The group was well attended, and quite large: we guessed around 70 people, maybe? It reminded me of when I walked into my very first G2 meeting and felt a little overwhelmed at first by a similar size group back then. Maybe that meeting prepared me for this size group, as I was not feeling overwhelmed this time. But then of course, I had Dan and Dave nearby. I was pleasantly surprised how welcoming everyone was to us, from hugs, to handshakes, to introductions. The meeting went smoothly, and the group has a large amount of activities, from rides, to dinners, to game nights, and other celebratory events, nicely organized into a fold up brochure. I m looking forward to some of these events and to making some new friends! In addition to the meeting, Dan and I also went on our first motorcycle ride out here. Most of our weekends after I came out in April had been spent property or house hunting, then checking weekly on our new construction, anticipating needs for the new home, and recuperating from a busy work week. But, finally on Feb. 17, we took off with David and Merle up Route 87 to Payson, AZ. I had resisted at first, thinking of all the things I needed to do, especially since I had already spent a couple hours getting acquainted with a new neighbor who had invited me over for coffee, then was informed we were invited to another friend of Dan s for homemade pizza. All in all, it was a true play day for me! The ride to Payson was gorgeous and sunny, though a bit chilly as we weaved up and down, and circled around the mountains. You guys would love the twisty turns! As I am viewing several rock formations we drove by, I couldn t help but think of something a mover had told my sister in law who had moved to AZ years ago and brought her landscape rocks with her. The mover had said, You know, they grow rocks out here!. All I could do was laugh, and think how right that person was. Yet, it was beautiful, in a primitive, desolate way. We stopped for lunch at a place called The Buffalo Grill, where we had juicy burgers (well Merle had a salad, but that looked good, too!) and more conversation as we warmed up from the cool ride. Though I had layered, my first layer was short sleeves, which was my undoing. Well I guess I will stop here, as Merle was kind enough to take a picture of Dan and I leading the ride. This is truly a view from the back. Thanks, Dave and Merle, for brightening my month! Darlene Parks The Good Book Guide Andrew Jackson was President of the United States from 1829 to He led an interesting life full of accomplishments. The Life of Andrew Jackson by Robert V. Remini is an abridgement of his three-volume biography that describes his life superbly. He was popularly known as the hero of the Battle of New Orleans wherein he defeated the British in a battle that was unnecessary since the treaty ending the War of 1812 was signed in England two months before it. He served in the American Revolution. He defeated the Creek nation opening up the frontier to settlement moving the Creek people to what is now Oklahoma. As governor of the Florida territory he put down the Seminole in that war and acquired Florida from Spain. He founded the Democratic party, believing that the President was the people s representative. As President he fought against corruption, disbanding the Bank of the United States to prevent such. Instead he divided Federal monies among the various state banks. His life was not without scandal. The love of his life, Rachel, was married to an abusive husband when they met. And they were married after they thought she had obtained a divorce. He also lived a good deal of his life with two bullets in him, one from a duel, the other from a battle wound. I think you ll enjoy reading about the details of these and other event s in his life. Ellary Kahan 6
