4 From The Chapter Director Dave & Sheila Shaffer It s just about September and if you already haven t noticed the sun is rising later in the mornings and setting earlier in the evenings meaning autumn is on its way. With that comes harvesting of the corn and soybeans by the area farmers. And that means the animals, especially deer, will be on the move. Everyone likes to see deer grazing out in the fields, but no one wants to see one up close while riding your motorcycle or driving your car or truck. This can be dangerous if not fatal. In the September 2018 issue of Wing World Magazine are what I thought to be two excellent articles. One article on page is about deer and motorcycles how they don t mix. The other on page is about hitting an animal. I encourage you to please read both of these articles as they are short, very informative and should help to remind yourself to be extra mindful as to what possibly could happen in the upcoming last couple of riding months. It could happen on any stretch of back road or even an interstate or main highway. Keep alert and your eyes open! Ride and drive SAFE! If you re going to Wing Ding 40 in Knoxville, TN, Aug. 28 Sept. 1, please have a safe and enjoyable trip. The date and location for the Southwest/Southest District Gathering has finally been announce being Saturday September 29 th at the Johnson County Park Campgrond in Nineveh, IN. See the flyer in this newsletter for details.

7 92 COUNTIES CHALLENGE RULES The 92 COUNTIES CHALLENGE is to get an individual member, not a chapter, to tour as many counties as possible in Indiana between April 1 and October 31, The person needs to verify their presence at the POINTS OF INTEREST by keeping a photo of them or their bike/car at the designated location. The photos will only be requested for verification from the two winners at the end of the contest. A couple can participate as individuals, each with their own sheet. The POINTS OF INTEREST form is provided with a column on the left side for riders to keep record of the date they were at the destination. A $100 prize will be given to one individual who completes the challenge or who visits the most locations. In case of a tie in the most locations visited, a drawing will be conducted to choose the one winner of the $100. A second place prize of $25 will be given to an individual who is in a drawing of all the riders who visited a minimum of sixty of the designated locations. The person who has 60 or more sites and was declared the winner, will not be eligible for the second-place drawing. The POINTS OF INTEREST are locations in each county to give the rider a destination. The address for many of the POINTS is provided while the rider will have to do some research to develop an exact route to others. The rider does not have to go into a location, purchase admission ticket, eat there, or do anything other than actually visit the location. We encourage riders to take advantage of the fact they are visiting some interesting locations but being at the location is the only factor considered in this challenge. Photos and verification of location visits will only have to be submitted by the winner of the $100 and the second place winner of the $25 to verify they were actually eligible to be declared winners. In order to determine who should be included in consideration for first place and included in the drawing, riders can scan their filled out POINTS OF INTEREST sheets, with dates they visited filled in, to mocpath@comcast.net OR they can mail the forms to Lonny Hunter, 1123 E 650 S, Markleville, IN For questions regarding the challenge, feel free to call or contact: Lonny Hunter mocpath@comcast.net

10 ... from the Indiana District Ride Educators This article is a first for me! For the first time in my newsletter article writing life I actually had a request for a newsletter article! I feel like I have arrived! Thanks for Bianca Prater, Chapter F in Warsaw for her request. Bianca requested an article about GWRRA Team Riding. She pointed out the Team Riding Manual has not been updated since 1995! While that s true, the Team Riding roles and responsibilities have not changed much over time. GWRRA Team riding is not like every other aspect of our lives that seem to change constantly. To start with you must understand Team Riding is just that, a TEAM. Everyone who is participating in the ride is part of the team and has responsibilities to the group. We re not out on a group ride where everyone does their own thing, we re riding as a team, all looking out for ourselves and for our riding mates. I can t get into all the details here so I ll get a Team Riding training module set up for Winter Rendezvous this February. If you d like a module taught just for your chapter or area, let me know and we ll make it happen sponsibilities of the Road Captain in regards to plan- tain course. HOLES left in the formation invites aggressive motorists to cut into the formation, which may result in them tailgating our teammate ahead of us. This creates a very dangerous situation. Each team member must protect the other by maintaining appropriate spacing. During darkness or inclement weather, a 2-second stagger and a 4-second following distance should be maintained to provide an extra margin of safety. This article just brushes the surface of TEAM riding. The actual Team Riding training module discusses obstacles, parked cars, parking lots, entering traffic, passing, lane changes, stopping, turning, hills, curves, speed changes, and communicating. It is WELL worth taking or taking again if you ve already had it. Until next time. Rick and Debbie Warmels Indiana Educators
