1 Our Mission It is the mission of the Mobile Area Council, here in Southwest Alabama, to promote within its area, the purposes and goals of the Boy Scouts of America. The council works to develop, organize and effectively use volunteer, financial and community resources to ensure a quality program. This effort will result in assisting a maximum number of youth to develop high moral character, good citizenship, leadership ability, patriotism, self reliance and personal fitness. We strive to instill values in young people to prepare them to make ethical choices over their lifetime and to achieve their full potential based on the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Our History The Boy Scouts of America was founded on February 8, 1910 by a group of prominent Americans lead by Chicago newspaper publisher W.D. Boyce. Boyce received his chief inspiration from Lord Robert Baden-Powell, who founded Scouting in England in In 1916, the Boy Scouts of America received a charter from the Sixty-Fourth Congress of the United States to promote, through organization, and cooperation with other agencies, the ability for boys to do things for themselves and others, to train them in Scoutcraft, and to teach them patriotism, courage, self-reliance, and kindred virtues, using the methods which are now in common use by the Boy Scouts. The Mobile Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, was chartered on August 14th, 1925 by the National Council to implement a quality Scouting program to all youth in its geographic area. The council is incorporated in the State of Alabama. As the council celebrates 85 years of Scouting in Southwest Alabama, the traditional programs are more dynamic than ever before with innovative programs. This emphasis will enable the council to spread Scouting's positive influence into new areas of our community. The leadership of the council is dedicated to promoting and advancing growth of the Scouting movement and to continue to be a proactive organization for young people. *The following are key events and stories as they were printed in issues of the Council Newsletter in (Some of the articles may appear in the past tense, as they were written and printed.) The final tally was nearly 20,000 pounds, which is an increase over last year! A special THANKS goes out to Greer s Markets and Food Tiger Stores which provided 100,000 specially printed bags for the gathering of the food, and the Bay Area Food Bank, which provided trucks, drivers and manpower to sort the food collected. Without these partners, this campaign could not have been such a great success. The only thing that could have made it better is if even more Scouts had been able to participate in this great opportunity to be in the community providing this vital service to our needy neighbors. Hopefully by instilling in our Scouts the values that it takes to make our community a better place, they will continue doing a good turn daily throughout their lifetime. Thank you Scouts for your efforts! Thank you Scout Leaders, and all those parents who helped their children see the value of thinking globally and acting locally. It was a perfect football day at the 63rd Senior Bowl game on January 28, 2012 at Ladd Peebles Stadium in Mobile, AL. This was a great event for the scouts of the Mobile Area Council and a few of our friends from the Gulf Coast Council. Thanks to the over 70 Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, Explorers, Leaders and SENIOR BOWL 2012 Parents who volunteered to usher the game. We had participants from Maubila, Cloverleaf, Choctaw, Baldwin, Spanish Trail and Learning for Life Districts. The scouts that were there were very helpful and made a very good impression of the scouting program. These scouts, leaders and parents did a fantastic job. Council Commissioner s Corner Recently, the history of the Mobile Area Council from its beginning in 1919 to present has been placed on the Council s web site. The history is the result of my research and hopefully is found to be both accurate and informative. It gives the reader an overview of how the Mobile Area Council has evolved and some of the events that have occurred during its history. Those from Mobile will find many of the names familiar. I believe it reflects the importance that members of the community, community leaders and Scouters in Mobile and the surrounding area have given the Boy Scout program since its beginning. There are a number of photographs that show Scouts and their leaders since Also included is a history of the Mobile Area Council s camps over the years. Please take time to read this history and find out just how our Council has grown over the years and the many changes that have taken place as well. 5 Spring Cub & Webelos Scout Family Camp at Maubila Scout Reservation! The Spring Cub Scout Fun with Son campout WHAT A GREAT WEEK- END! On March 30 April 1, there were 250 Cub Scouts, Webelos Scouts and their families at the Maubila Scout Reservation!!! We had a great weekend shooting archery & BBs, making crafts, going boating, checking out creepy crawly things, exploring nature, a great campfire on Saturday night and much more! If you missed this one you don t want to miss the next one in the fall! 2012 Maubila Scout Reservation Summer Camp Philmont Scout Ranch What a bouldering wall? Scouts from Troop 292, 121, 29, and 3 participated in the high adventure camp at Philmont Scout Ranch. The 2 crews of 12 backpacked in the mountains and back country of Philmont for 10 days. Activities included rock climbing, rappelling, and rifle shooting. Between the crews the following peaks were hiked, Baldy Mountain (12,441 ft), Mt. Phillips (11,736 ft.), Comanche Peak (11,303 ft.) and Tooth of Time (9,003 ft). The crews arrived at Philmont on July 9 and departed on July 21. Thanks to Mobile Lumber who donated the materials, we now have Bouldering Walls at both of our council camps! Bouldering is a type of climbing where you don t leave more than a few feet off the ground and you work your way horizontally through a route. So, the next time you are at Camp Maubila or Camp Pinetreat, go ahead and test your skills and climb the Bouldering Wall. This has been the Biggest and Best Ski Trip yet!!!! Their were over 117 skiers on the slopes of Ober Gatlinburg on January This has been the largest group yet to attend the annual Venturing/ Exploring Ski Trip. Baker, Leflore, and Satsuma ROTC Crews, along with Fairhope Police Explorers enjoyed the snow and skiing. Next year promises to be even better. Summer camp staff test riding the new trail bikes The Troops came rolling in at Maubila Scout Reservation this year. It all started on Sunday, June 10th 2012, when the first troops arrived. They were met by the well rested and trained summer camp staff. They were checked into their campsites, went and visited the health lodge, dining hall, and swimming pool before enjoying a great dinner meal and campfire program. Scouts flocked to the fully stocked Trading Post with its ice cream, slushes, shirts, hats, candy, and scouty stuff. While at the trading post. The NEW Trail BIKES were a big hit. Scouts and adults got to explore camp much faster this year on those bikes. Think we will have to post speed limit signs for next year. Scouts that took GEO-CACHING merit badge used GPS receivers to get lost and find their way back, darn those GPS. At the Waterfront, adult leaders took the Aquatics Supervision. It is hands on Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat. Watching those scoutmasters demonstrate their skills on t he water was somet h i ng else. Mrs. Van Momma Young was the Camp cook, and once again did a fabulous job of providing great food and on time with a ready smile and hug for all scouts, young and old alike. Believe it or not the dining hall with it s BIG BOY SCOUT FAN was one of the cooler spots on camp, it sure did make a difference Annual Report
