1 PATHWAY TO ADVENTURE COUNCIL 1218 WEST ADAMS STREET CHICAGO, IL BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA SPRING 2017 OWASIPPE OWASIPPE LODGE #7 ORDER OF THE Visit: Owasippelodge.org Building the path to servant leadership. MEMORIAL DAY WORK WEEKEND 2017 SPRING 2017 Annual Work Weekend / Vigil Inductions Your Cheerful Service is Needed The biggest and best opportunity for all Arrowmen to provide some needed service for Owasippe takes place over the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend each year. Usually Arrowmen, youth and adult Scouters, along with family and friends of Owasippe provide important and needed service to help get the camps ready for the summer camping season. Both skilled and unskilled volunteers are always needed. We are always in need of skilled volunteers in carpentry, electrical and plumbing. Some key areas for the need of carpentry work this year includes building some stars at Reneker staff #2, widow and screen repairs and animal damage to several buildings and kybos. Equally important is the number of unskilled volunteers needed for opening up and cleaning program and staff areas, painting the exterior of Wolverine lodge, trading post and poll, etc. Take the opportunity to join us and help set some up program areas, make some general repairs and cleanup at camp sites for the upcoming summer camping season. Encourage other Arrowmen and Scouts from your unit to join you. This is a great opportunity for Scouting fathers and sons to spend some valuable quality time together. The weekend is not just work but is also filled with many opportunities for fun, fellowship, and relaxation. The service you provide will directly benefit all scouts attending summer camp this year. Join us and help make their camping experience in 2017 at Owasippe the best ever. In addition all Ordeal members will have the opportunity to seal their membership in the Brotherhood on Saturday Evening. The candidates selected for the Vigil Honor will complete their induction and be recognized in a public ceremony on Sunday morning. Register early by sending in the registration form located inside of this newsletter. Additional registration forms can be found at owasippelodge.org. We are always in need of Arrowmen to step up to be a crew leader for one of the service projects. This can be a great opportunity for a troop or a crew from a chapter to take on one or more of these projects. Anyone interested to become a crew leader or have a crew organized and interested in a particular project or camp can contact Jacob Klein (312) or Event Adviser, Zach Schleyer at (708)

2 SPRING 2017 PAGE 2 Section C7 Conclave Russ Milschewski receives Founder s Award The Annual Winter Banquet was a great success thanks to the hard work from this year s host chapter Gata Manitu. In addition to some great fellowship with fellow Arrowmen and families several lodge members were recognized for their service and accomplishments in Our key note speaker this year was Illinois State Senator Antonio Munoz. The highlight each year is the calling out of distinguished lodge members for the Vigil Honor and the awarding of the Founder s Award. The Founder' Award is reserved for an Arrowman who demonstrates that he or she personifies the spirit of selfless service, as advocated by founder E. Urner Goodman and cofounder Carroll A. Edson. In recognition of his devoted and spirited contribution to our resident camp program while serving as Chairman for the Owasippe Properties Committee Russ Milschewski was presented the Founder s Award. As a youth Arrowman Russ served as a Chapter Meteu, Chapter Chief and as Chairman for several Lodge events. Today, as an adult, this Arrowman continues to demonstrate the qualities of servant leadership. The Vigil Honor is a high mark of distinction and recognition reserved for those Arrowmen who, by reason of exceptional service, personal effort, and unselfish interest, have made distinguished contributions beyond the immediate responsibilities of their position of office. This year the lodge selected the following members for the Vigil Honor. Benjamin Keats - Max Michaels - Brendan Mullaney Daniel Murphy - Tristan Rinholm - Al Geiser Mick Aleksic - John Nelson Conclave is the biggest and best Scouting event of the entire year, and it's something that you don't want to miss! 3 SPRING 2017 PAGE 3 Lodge Adviser s Message Order of the Arrow at Summer Camp Since our founding at Treasure Island Scout Reservation, the Order of the Arrow has been a part of the summer camp experience for Scouts across the nation. In 1921, 96 years ago, one of the Co-Founders of the Order of the Arrow, Carroll E Edson, came to Chicago as a district executive. While working at summer camp that first year he started our lodge at Camp Owasippe. From that beginning and for the following 96 years we have fashioned a rich history supporting our council programs, camps, providing key leadership and helped develop innovative ideas within the Order of the Arrow. It is very important that we continue to make every effort to maintain a strong OA commitment and energy at camp, Having a strong Order of the Arrow integrated into summer camp program means that we can educate younger scouts about the Order of the Arrow and the exciting things our lodge does. Our involvement at summer camp becomes a billboard to get scouts and Scouters interested and exited about the OA. Thousands of youth and adult Arrowmen before us formed a great lodge history along with rich traditions. The future of writing a new chapter to our history is now in the hands of each of us. To be successful it will require the full support of each and every lodge member attending summer camp this year. Consider stepping up to be an Elangomat or Nimat. Give one or two hours of time to take on an active role as a torch barrier, a member of the call-out team or even as a ceremonialist for the Pre-Ordeal, Ordeal or Brotherhood one week. Most importantly be present in support of all induction ceremonies. Thus, the OA will have a more prominent place in the hearts and minds of all campers as a result of all our members participating. Are you ready to help make the OA program at camp to be the best ever? Are you ready to write the next chapter in our rich lodge history? IT BEGINS WITH US! New Schedule for 2017 OA Inductions at Owasippe 2017 Call-Out Ceremonies Call-out ceremonies will be conducted each week on Wednesday evening as the camp wide program. Only candidates whose name is on the official Owasippe Lodge candidate list or on the official unit s copy of the Unit s Election Report will be called out. No Exceptions. Units should verify election results prior to camp and notify the Section Camp OA Coordinator. All Order of the Arrow elections must be conducted at least two weeks prior to coming to camp. Registration Registration for OA Induction Events must be done on the Owasippe Lodge 2017 Summer Inductions Registration form and Induction fees must be paid in advance. Notify the camp OA coordinator with a list of Scouts who will complete their Ordeal or Brotherhood by Tuesday lunch. A unit may sign up candidates online at least two weeks prior to arriving at camp or mail preregistration to the council office. Ordeal Inductions Wednesday evening-thursday evening Prerequisites: Duly elected by your troop in Owasippe Lodge. Brotherhood Induction Thursday evening - Location: Wolverine South Lodge Ordeal members of Owasippe Lodge wishing to seal their membership in the order should contact the Reservation or Section Camp OA Coordinator.

4 PAGE 4 SPRING 2017 Message to Ordeal Members Why does the Order of the Arrow have both Ordeal and Brotherhood membership? One reason is to allow the new members (Ordeal) time to practice what they have learned. By having the experience of living the OA Obligation by providing cheerful service within their troop or team, they will be better prepared to receive maximum value from the Brotherhood ceremony. In the Ordeal, the Order of the Arrow indicated its commitment to the Scouts and Scouters. Brotherhood membership offers the Scouts and Scouters the opportunity to indicate their commitment to the Order of the Arrow. The completion of the Ordeal sets each new OA member on an exciting journey to Brotherhood. Every Arrowman who completes at least 10 months of active service is eligible to seal his membership in the Brotherhood ceremony. There are three stages on the path to becoming a Brotherhood member. The journey to Brotherhood builds on the ideals, principles, and themes introduced in the Ordeal and provide new members with additional time to reflect on the Ordeal experience, the challenges of the Ordeal, and the principles of the Order within the framework of the troop or team. Arrowmen seeking to reaffirm their belief in the high purpose of the Order seeks Brotherhood membership. Each week during the summer camp program at Owasippe you will have a great chance to convert to Brotherhood Membership. This conversion opportunity is available to brothers who were inducted in 2016 or earlier. Brotherhood membership requires no additional day of work or sleeping out. It's about sealing your commitment to the Order of the Arrow and Scouting. Contact your local chapter or the lodge for more information about any questions you may have for Brotherhood membership. Requirements for Brotherhood Membership Be an Ordeal member for at least ten months. Be an active member of your Scout unit. Be an active, paid member of the Lodge. Write a letter to the Lodge Secretary reviewing your progress and planned service.. Register for the Brotherhood at a scheduled event. Participate in a Brotherhood Ceremony. Order of the Arrow Unit of Excellence Award 1. Leadership: Implement the Troop/Team OA Representative and Troop/Team OA Representative Adviser (Assistant Scoutmaster or Assistant Coach Designee) programs in your unit. Every six months, ensure that the senior patrol leader (Troop) or Team Captain (Team) appoints or reappoints one Scout or Team Member to serve as Troop/Team OA Representative and the Scoutmaster /Coach appoints one adult to serve as Troop Team OA Representative Adviser. Feature an annual presentation at a Court of Honor by the Troop/Team OA Representative on the Order of the Arrow with a focus on the accomplacements of unit members. 2. 8 SPRING 2017 Building Camping Traditions PAGE 8 Very soon it will be that time for our summer camping adventures to begin. Our resident camps and staff are making final preparations to provide many opportunities for all Scouts and Scouters to have a very successful and enjoyable summer camping experience. But our success will not rely solely on their preparations. Whether we camp at a resident camp, attend a camp at another location or plan a high adventure trip, our fond camping memories not only come from the planned and structured programs provided at these locations but from the troop activities and special times that we develop as a unit. It might be that special troop dinner, sharing an evening campfire with a neighboring unit, watching a colorful sunrise or sunset from a special location, or dropping a fishing line along a calm lake before breakfast. It could be tubing or canoeing on the White River, a troop hike on one of the many historic trails through Owasippe, or observing the wonders of our universe on a clear cool night. It could even be a worthwhile service project for the camp. Whatever it is will help develop troop camping traditions and build those special lifelong memories for all Scouts. Be sure to use all the resources available to you and have another great summer camping experience in NOTE LODGE WEB PAGE IS BACK ONLINE AT OWASIPPELODGE.ORG Get more information on upcoming lodge events, registration forms, chapter news and events, chapter meeting dates and their locations, section C7 news, and upcoming National events.
