1 Arrow Volume XXXIV, Issue 3 - September Summer Camp Update by Brandon Van Den Eykel, Lodge Vice- Chief, Committees Pa-Hin Lodge Flap Design Contest It was great summer for Order of the Arrow! For those who don t know, I was the OA Coordinator this summer at Camp Wilderness. I led a meeting every Monday night for any OA members at camp that week along with others who wanted to learn more about the program. I also set up each of the Call-out and Brotherhood Ceremonies and set up informational programs with different troops to help them learn more about what Order of the Arrow is all about and how to set up their own elections in the spring. For the most part, everything went pretty well this year. We called out over 60 Candidates and had about (insert #) Ordeal Members complete their Brotherhood Ceremony. This is a little bit less than the (insert #) that went through their Brotherhood last summer. I think this was partly due to the fact that this summer was also the year of the National Jamboree, so I look forward to getting those numbers back up this next summer! The only other issue that I really ran into was the lack of volunteers. Some weeks went very well, but other weeks I struggled to find enough volunteers to help with each of the ceremonies. Anyone who is in Order of the Arrow, especially those that are on Summer Camp staff, is highly encouraged to help with our program each week. It is our responsibility as Arrowmen to make sure the new candidates and campers can have these positive experiences. Plus it is a whole lot of fun and supports the camp overall. So join me as I look forward to what the next summer brings! Make your mark on History! Announcing the contest to design the next Pa-Hin Lodge Flap.The Lodge Executive Committee approved the a new patch for the Standard Issue. You don t need to be the best artist to design a patch -- you just need a good idea and a rough sketch of what the patch will look like (the patch design company will clean it up). Make sure to submit your ideas by the Leadership Retreat on October 8th. We will be making choices at the LEC held on October 9th. I know that they will continue to provide an adequate program for us all. and the fall conclave. Next I would like to thanks all who were involved in the panning of fall Conclave. Fall Conclave was a huge success and I know that all who attended had a great time. We ve planned some fun team-building games, will talk about goals for the Lodge in 2011, evaluate this year s program, learn about ArrowPower2011, and other great sessions. Who Should be there: Chapter Officers - Chief, Vice-Chiefs, Secretary Committee Chairman - Anyone serving as the Chair of a Committee New Arrowmen - Did you just join the OA? Want to see what the OA does? I m not a Lodge or Chapter Officer, why should I attend? The OA Lodge is made up of over 500 people. We need all of you and your ideas -- we want to hear from you -- this is the time and the place. Where do we sleep? We ll be hanging out in the Valley City Auditorium. Bring your sleeping bag and pad/cot. What do we need to bring? You should bring yourself, sleeping bag, a notebook, and great ideas about what you want for the future of the OA. Is food included? Yes, we ll provide food on Saturday and also on Sunday morning.

June 21st - 26th, Section C1A (our section) is teaming up with Section C1B for the service project of a life time! We will be working on many different service projects in Superior National Forests. Some of these include: constructing campsites, clearing/updating trails, clearing bike trails, and even bridge constructing! Don t The work we do here will leave a lasting impression for years to come and will be there for your family to enjoy. So if you want to get involved and expand outdoor recreation for others, love spending time in the woods, hiking, camping, and mountain biking, you need to check out ArrowPower2011! What could be better than fellowship with your fellow Arrowmen, spending time in the great outdoors, and working to make the world a better place for generations to come? 4 Arrow 4 Fall Conclave Report Fall Conclave was a very exciting time at Camp Wilderness in August. At conclave the newly inducted Ordeal Members did numerous work projects. The biggest project of the weekend was the Lodge Observatory Project. We are almost done with the project we just need to lay concrete and build the shed. We had seven people go through there brotherhood at Conclave as well. Before conclave had actually started we conducted the Vigil ceremony for those who were selected to the Vigil Honor the highest award that a Lodge can bestow on its members. Hopefully we can see a bigger attendance next year. Thank you to all who were involved with the planning of it and thank you to all who attendend Do you Think you Know the Obligation of our Order? 6 Arrow 6 The 2010 Lodge Observatory Project by Brandon Van Den Eykel, Lodge Vice- Chief, Committees This is an exciting year for many scouters all across the country. And the members of Pa-Hin Lodge are no exception. The Lodge has been planning/assisting in the planning of many fun activities along with designing new centennial patches and of course, the 2010 Lodge Service Project! Some of you may have heard a little about the project, and other maybe have not. To give a little background information, the project will take place out at Camp Wilderness, our main council camp. This has been the last service project since the lodge built the Bog Walk near the Nature area back in This year, we will be building a Mini Astronomy Observatory Dome! We will be using the SkyShed POD (more info available at One of the really cool things about the SkyShed POD -- their owner was a Boy Scout! We will lay out a concrete slab, install the POD on the pad, and then we will outfit the POD with a nice updated telescope along with other equipment. This will not only benefit the expanding Astronomy program at camp, but we will also be decorating the POD with adornments such as a large decal and signs that talk about Order of the Arrow and Pa-Hin Lodge specifically to hopefully increase some interest in the OA. In addition to building and outfitting the dome, we are hoping too that within the next year or so to also install benches and whatnot to create a new and exciting outdoor classroom to teach merit badges and also to offer places to sit while scouts wait to use the POD. To assist in funding this project, we applied for a service grant. I was lucky enough to get to be one of the people who assisted in writing it and long story short: there were many of us quite excited to find out that we were awarded the Service grant, which totaled $2,850! The construction of the project will occur at Fall Conclave. We need your help! Both regular members and Ordeal Candidates will be working on this project, making sure that we have a good, serviceable trail to the site, leveling and grading the site, as well as installing the Pod itself.

7 Arrow 7 Pa-Hin Lodge Quality Lodge Goals The National Order of the Arrow committee has developed the Quality Lodge program (similar to Quality Unit) to aid lodges in program development. It provides a guide for good lodge administration and recognizes a level of excellence in lodge program and operation. Quality Lodge is national recognition of a successful Lodge Program. Pa-Hin was recognized as a Quality Lodge in 2008 and in Achieving Quality Lodge stautus is required to apply for all national lodge awards and recognitions - such as the National Service Grant (which provides matching funds for service projects) and the E. Urner Goodman Camping Award. Pa-Hin Lodge 2010 Quality Lodge Goals 1. The lodge complies with all requirements in the current printings of the OA Handbook, Guide for Officers and Advisers, Field Operations Guide, Guide to Inductions, and ceremony books. 2. The lodge experienced positive growth in its membership. 3. The lodge inducted a minimum of 30% of its eligible Ordeal members into the Brotherhood. 4. The lodge conducted one or more Lodge Leadership Development (LLD) courses with qualified instructors and used the current LLD materials (available at to train lodge and chapter officers, lodge and chapter committee chairmen, and their advisers. Collectively, the LLD courses were attended by a minimum of 75% of all members eligible to attend. 5. The lodge completed service projects for the council camp or service center, and a council-approved community service project. A written report for each project was included in the lodge annual report. During the year, lodge members contributed an average of three hours of service per person. 6. After contacting each troop and team in the council, the lodge conducted elections in every unit desiring an election. The election teams were trained and all team members were in proper uniform during each unit election. 7. Following a review of the Order of the Arrow Strategic Plan, the lodge Key 3 met with the council Scout executive to identify ways for the lodge to be more effective in cooperating and coordinating with council programs and events. 8. The lodge leadership actively participated in the development and implementation of the council s plan for the promotion of the council camping, high adventure, and other outdoor programs. Working closely with district and council leadership, the lodge camping promotion committee helped establish and conduct promotional contacts to a minimum of 75% of the troops and teams in the council as of June 30, The lodge contributed cash, materials, or both, to the council in an amount equal to at least $2.00 per lodge member. 10. The lodge submitted a written annual report of accomplishments to the council executive board. 11. In addition to contributions made in item 9, the lodge made a minimum contribution of $1000 to the council s endowment fund. 12. The lodge Key 3 met at least six times during the year to discuss the progress of the lodge. An agenda and meeting minutes must be printed and shared with the Scout Executive. 13. The lodge produced and distributed (by hardcopy, , or lodge website) a minimum of four newsletters to its members and contributed articles to the council s newsletter or website. 14. All Chapters will prepare and send in the reports from Chapter meetings 15. Pa-Hin Lodge will complete and submit the petition for the 2010 E. Urner Goodman Camping Award Petition. The Camping Award Petition includes publication of the Where to Go Camping cd, pamphlet or website.

All Pa-Hin Members are invited to attend the weekend training event. There ll be fun activites that get the officers to know each other to details on how to run Chapter events. November 5-7, 2010 National Leadership Seminar@ Parkville, MO National Leadership Seminar (NLS) is among the top leadership training program for youth in the Boy Scouts. Exeperienced National Youth Leaders provide a weekend instruction on leadership and how to be an officer in the Order of the Arrow. Youth Leaders have already been selected to attend, but make sure to sign up for the April NLS in Minnesota. November 21, 8pm Lodge Executive Committee Conference Call All Chapter and Lodge Officers, as well as all advisors, should plan on calling in for this meeting.
