Service Always ready Never let our District down Trustworthy Energetic Mark your calendars... Wiatava Pow Lost Valley on August 28th 30th Santee sends Arrowman to this weekend of competition and fellowship Submarine Memorial Day Service Project Efficient Santee Chapter has a webpage santee.wiatava.org Why should you visit the webpage? There is all sorts of great stuff there including: Calendar with more than a year of important dates Contact info for officers and advisors Chapter History including past chiefs and award recipients Recaps of meetings you may have missed The Submarine Memorial Day Service Project was a success! The scouts of Santee worked together with other members of WIATAVA, setting up chairs and canopies for the Memorial Day ceremony, putting out each of the submarine fleets flag. When the ceremony started, we escorted the widowed wives of veterans, and were available to do anything that was asked of us. After the ceremony was done, we helped put away everything, including the chairs and canopies. Some of us got the privilege to go onto base to help re-load the old veteran building with the things we used in the ceremony. It was a very fun and rewarding service project, and I know that the veterans appreciated our help. Jerry Lewicki A way to easily submit your service hours Forms, Paperwork, and other resources

New National Monument in our Backyard The President of The United States of America designates the San Gabriel Mountains a National Monument. Plan your trip to this local resource today, so you will be able to say "I knew the Mountains, before the Federal changes took place." Half Dome Hike Foiled by Lightning On July 9, at 4:30 AM, three Arrowmen, Ian, Owen, and Richard Marubayashi, set out from Yosemite Valley, hoping to hike to the top of the famed Half Dome. Although thunderstorms had been popping up in the Sierras for several days, we tried to remain optimistic that we could dodge the weather if we started out early enough (in fact, two others in our party started out at 2:00 AM). But alas, we got an early wave of thunderstorms that started raining on us shortly after we started the hike. We had even seen winks of distant lightning as early as 4:30. We got as far as Vernal Falls, but by that time the thunder was following so closely behind the lightning that we decided to take shelter in a large granite overhang right next to the falls. It sheltered us from the rain as we watched the lightning pass over the valley. During this period, we also noticed something that not everyone gets to see -- ephemeral waterfalls appearing on the canyon walls below Glacier Point. These were not huge waterfalls but they did cascade several hundred feet down the walls, and when the rain stopped, they were gone within minutes. What a treat! After more than an hour of waiting for the weather to pass, we decided that a summiting of Half Dome just wasn't going to happen that day (even in the absence of lightning, rain makes the granite treacherously slick), so we turned around and headed back to camp. Even though we didn't complete our goal, it did occur to me that this would be a fantastic outing for a group of Arrowmen. The maximum group size is 6 for Half Dome permits, but if we submit enough applications, we could get lucky and get several groups together on the same day. The permits themselves only cost $6 each. Wouldn't it be great to get a photo of a bunch of Santee Arrowmen on the top of Half Dome? Something to think about! Richard Marubayashi

Wiatava Lodge Service Corp Award Cheerful service is the very core of our brotherhood. This year the Wiatava Lodge is implementing a new award to recognize those Arrowmen both youth and adult who go above and beyond in providing cheerful service. The award is the Wiatava Lodge Conservation Corp. The award has three levels bronze, silver, and gold. Below are the requirements. a. Bronze i. 25 hours of service ii. One project must be over 5 hours b. Silver i. 50 hours of service ii. 3 projects over 5 hours that benefit 3 different organizations c. Gold i. Attend a lodge conservation project All service for this award can be backlogged to Jan. 1 of this year or your induction whichever is earlier. Please note that lodge conservation projects will be clearly advertised as such. Each level of the Conservation Corp. come with a certificate recognizing your accomplishment. At the silver level recipients will be given a special patch. And finally at the gold level recipient will receive a special pin for their patch. Please note that this pin can only be worn on the Conservation Corp. patch. All service done for a non-profit organization may be logged for this award. This includes all official BSA and OA service projects. If you are wondering if your project is appropriate please service@wiatava.org for an answer. After completing a level of the award turn the sheet into your Chapter Chief. Within two lodge meetings the Lodge VC of Service will send the applicable items to him. He will then give the items to you. A requirement sheet for both the bronze and silver levels is attached. Also a FAQ will be published on the lodge website later this month. We are also looking for a design for the award patch. The Wiatava Lodge Service committee is accepting designs from all youth members of Wiatava. Keep in that the final version will be a 3 round patch and have small pin that incorporates into the design. Please send your designs into service@wiatava.org by 7/5/15. The lodge service committee will chose the final design at the July committee meeting. Yours in Brotherhood, Peter Jensen service@wiatava.org Wiatava Lodge Vice Chief of Service

Newsletter August s newsletter will be mailed out to everyone. Did you get the newsletter in May? If not, then we probably don t have your address correct. Contact paulkillian@gmail.com to update your address today. If you have an article that you d like everyone to see. Pictures, stories about boys scouts, OA, camping trips, service projects, recogoniation, Native American History, or something else you think that the chapter would be interested in, send it to paulkillian@gmail.com by August 9 th Paul Killian, Advisor to the Secretary paulkillian@gmail.com Ceremonies Team Help Needed Hello Fellow Scouts, I am in need of youth to be apart of ceremonies. The youth needed are for the preordeal and ordeal teams. Right now we are down one or two people, and we need a full team to compete at Pow Wow at the end of August. If you are available to be apart of the ceremonies team, please contact me, Kyle Recker, at krecker0200 please. For practices, we meet once a week and as we get closer twice a week). As for commitment, the practices will be about an hour, sometimes longer. More time may be needed though for memorizing of the script (s). It is a lot of fun, and not that difficult. If you are interested, or on the fence about voluenteering, come see me at the chapter meeting. Pow-wow is at the end of August (August 28-30) so we need help now, and by the time school really starts going, we ll be done. Thanks Thank you, Kyle Recker krecker0200@gmail.com VC of Indian Affairs Dues! Have you paid your 2015 Dues? Not sure? See our Treasurer, Collin O Hare, at the Chapter meeting

Arrowman Service Award Commemorate the Order of the Arrow s centennial by working to complete the Arrowman Service Award! The purpose of the Arrowman Service Award (ASA) is to encourage Arrowmen to recommit themselves to the ideals of the Order, increase their level of service to their local unit and council, and participate in the 100th anniversary celebration of the OA. The award will have three categories of criteria with various requirements that Arrowmen can complete. These include components on personal growth, service to Scouting, and participation in the centennial celebration. Those completing the prescribed requirements will receive a patch that can be worn on the Order of the Arrow sash. This is one of only 3 patches that can be worn ON the sash!
