11 Adelaide Convention Centre ADELAIDE CONVENTION CENTRE A $400 million 2-stage redevelopment of the Adelaide Convention Centre is significantly increasing capacity and flexibility with the end result being three distinct interlinked buildings. The first stage was opened to the public in March This wing has expanded westwards over the railway lines and now sits over the road from Adelaide s BioMed City. Stage two of the redevelopment replaces the original Plenary Building (home of the first convention centre in Australia in 1987) with a multi-purpose, state-of-the-art facility with plenary capacity of up to 3,500 seats and opens September This redevelopment positions Adelaide Convention Centre as one of the most versatile, technologically advanced and appealing event spaces in the world. 11

12 Artists Impression Adelaide Festival Centre Redevelopment ADELAIDE FESTIVAL CENTRE & PLAZA Adelaide s iconic Festival Centre has commenced a $90 million re-development with improvements to the building s exterior and an internal technical upgrade. The outcomes of the project will enable the Adelaide Festival Centre to continue to attract the biggest and best shows and events to Adelaide. The redevelopment will better support presenters and reward patrons with the best arts and entertainment attractions within Adelaide s Riverbank. A further significant commitment relates to the exciting redevelopment of Festival Plaza. The Festival Centre sits at the heart of the Plaza and will be a key part of this transformative project that will enhance the arts and entertainment attractions in the Riverbank precinct. 12

13 Artists impression Adelaide Casino Expansion ADELAIDE CASINO The Adelaide Casino has recently undergone a multimillion dollar refurbishment, making it a world class entertainment destination and ideal for entertainment purposes or a memorable function and corporate event. The Adelaide Casino has already embarked on the next phase of its redevelopment, a $50 million investment to a luxury complex, offering services for the high end consumers. The award-winning contemporary dining of Sean Connolly s New York Brasserie inspired restaurant, Sean s Kitchen and the French Vietnamese Bistro, Madame Hanoi by acclaimed celebrity Chef Nick Watt are two jewels in the Casino s crown. The Adelaide Casino will shortly embark on the next phase of its re-development, a $330 million investment to a state-of-the-art hotel complex, offering services for the high end consumer. The new building will be presented with a coherent architectural expression including a layered, wavlinear glazed form, referencing the nearby River Torrens. The multi-faceted arrangement of glass will present a shimmering luminous quality by day and by night. 13

14 Adelaide BioMed City ADELAIDE S BIOMED CITY Fertile Ground for Conventions As a key component of Adelaide s Riverbank, Adelaide is creating the largest BioMed City of health and biomedical research institutions in the Southern Hemisphere. Adelaide BioMed City This significant development has created fertile ground for successful international and domestic conventions in the fields of health, medicine and related sciences. It is also an initiative that adds great strength to the Bureau s Conventions Adelaide program which offers organisers a direct line to leading specialists and institutions operating within their field across Adelaide, Australia and the Asia Pacific. Institutions that form part of this integrated hub are listed on the following pages. 14

15 SAHMRI SAHMRI South Australian Health & Medical Research Institute SAHMRI has significantly increased Australia s capacity for leading scientific research. Some of the core practices undertaken at SAHMRI include; A team of 600 researchers, who work together in search of better treatments and cures for some of the world s most challenging diseases. Creating a state-ofthe-art output of medical research and clinical application with advanced laboratories and equipment in a purpose built iconic facility, adjacent to the new Royal Adelaide Hospital. It actively fosters and nurtures a new generation of the finest research minds, and undertake extensive and interactive community engagement and education. Key SAHMRI themes include Cancer, Heart Health, Nutrition & Metabolism, Mind & Brain, Infection & Immunity, Aboriginal Health, and Healthy Mothers, Babies & Children. SAHMRI 2 is scheduled to be built adjacent to SAHMRI and will house an additional 500 researchers over 12 levels and is set to become the site of Australia s first proton therapy unit, delivering cancer-destroying protons to the tumour site of otherwise inoperable cancers, without affecting healthy tissues. 15

16 New Royal Adelaide Hospital NEW ROYAL ADELAIDE HOSPITAL The new Royal Adelaide Hospital (nrah) will be the state s flagship public hospital and the cornerstone of the reformed South Australian health system. The nrah will direct South Australia s new patient-centred model of care by delivering safe, quality health services to South Australia. It will lead the world through innovative delivery methods like the automated robots for patient meals and hyperloop like piping that can deliver medicines and messages in fractions of seconds. The nrah will have 800 beds and all overnight patient rooms will be single bedrooms. There will be increased operating theatres, intensive care beds and emergency care capacity. Co-located with SAHMRI, the nrah will be a major teaching hospital and maintain strong ties with other training and research institutions. New Royal Adelaide Hospital Tour Video 16

17 UniSA Health Innovation Building HEALTH INNOVATION BUILDING (HIB) UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA The (HIB) will become home to the Centre for Cancer Biology (CCB), the Science I Creativity I Education Studio (SciCEd) and the Innovation and Collaboration Centre (ICC). The CCB carries out a world class program of research, making breakthrough discoveries in the fundamental causes of cancer, and translating these discoveries into new ways to prevent and treat the disease. The purpose-built SciEd will transform public perception of and participation in science technology and innovation. A partnership between UniSA, the Government of South Australia and Hewlett Packard Enterprise, the ICC helps business and industry turn their ideas into market success. 18 THE UNIVERSITY OF ADELAIDE Health & Medical Sciences Building The largest building project in the University of Adelaide s history that is transforming health treatment, training and discovery. Artist s Impression Health and Medical Sciences Building The new Adelaide Health and Medical Sciences Building opened in early With 1600 medical, nursing and dental students it will become an epicentre of clinical teaching in Adelaide, addressing some of the world s greatest challenges. The building will house 400 research staff, across four levels of integrated laboratories, where they will undertake groundbreaking research to address problems such as cancer, the symptoms of chronic diseases and ageing, and improving reproduction and children s health. 19 Holiday Inn Express Adelaide Royal Adelaide Hospital OTHER MAJOR PROJECTS NEW HOTELS Adelaide s capacity for hotel accommodation continues to grow in line with the convention and events infrastructure, and when all current projects are complete there will be over 6,500 rooms available to delegates and organisers across Adelaide s CBD. In 2017 the Holiday Inn Express will open its doors. This will be the first in a string of iconic hotels to be welcomed in Adelaide, including a Sofitel, Marriott and Langham. THE ROYAL ADELAIDE The Royal Adelaide site in Adelaide s thriving East End is an integral part of the Adelaide Riverbank and will become an internationally acclaimed mixed-use precinct, including cultural, community, retail, commercial development, education, research and residential spaces. Adelaide Convention Bureau has created a unique online booking tool for conference organisers to include on their own event website. This allows delegates to book tours and activities easily and directly, meaning that organisers can concentrate on other aspects of their event. Organisers can draw on the data from this portal to better understand the behaviour of their delegates. There is scope to feature the event logo on the portal s landing page. Adelaide Convention Bureau will also design bespoke tours for groups in line with the event organiser s requirements. However, we demonstrated that Adelaide can attract large numbers of delegates over 1000 in our case. Furthermore, we achieved our aim of attracting more delegates from Asia nearly 100 Japanese, as well as many from China, India, Singapore and Korea. This has helped make MASCC truly a world society. Just as an aside, the fact that Emirates and Qatar Airways both fly direct into Adelaide so often really makes international travel in and out of Adelaide easier (and cuts about 5 hours of a journey to Europe). 30 ADELAIDE CONVENTION BUREAU S FREE SERVICES Adelaide Convention Bureau is the peak independent body for business events in South Australia. The Bureau s members approximately 160 businesses and service providers share a common interest in conventions, exhibitions, incentive tourism and much more. The Adelaide Convention Bureau s role is to provide assistance and guidance to convention and event organisers through every stage of planning, free of charge.
